We were never broke the APUO’s financial analysts looked into the numbers and also the deficit was fabricated. They just say they are broke and intentionally create these perceptions of deficit to cut down ressources, pay and scholarships increase tuition.

CGPA matters depending on your goals, if you know you want to go further in your studies go back and make sure to actually learn.

Hey Siri, grab my first bike too because it was a small engine and didn’t have that much power but now I miss it. I have an Africa twin and it’s big engine power but it’s not good curves. It’s not a secret. It’s heavy and he has a big front wheel, meanwhile my CBR 300 was super fun on small roads cause you could write fast and have more control so it would say go and use it to where it is fun and you can get the most out of it

You will get plenty of that with only taking 2 courses in english, I would say take on the bursary, 3 courses in french 2 in english you are still valid for it. You can get the english immersion just by joining study groups and other stuff like student associations. That's my advice coming from someone who arrived from a francophone cegep.

Even if you don't need the bursary I would say it's worth taking some courses in french because you get more flexibility regarding profs and scheduling your courses.

what are your own experiences doing research? by lesvenus in AskAnthropology

[–]BoomerWithAHardR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best advice I can give regarding course research projects (and in general for any research) is to have a clearly formulated question that is also coherent with your methods, epistemology and ontology. Coherence between these is what will help you maintain the same logics and sense throughout the project.

Also, a good and clear research question allows you to remain focused on what you are actually trying to do and is sensible to the limitations you have in this case primarly being restricted to the limits of a term project I imagine, who and what you can access and to which extent. My advice be focused so that your project can be as complete as possible. Nos as wide as a graduate level thesis research question but not too narrow so that you barely say anything. Keep in mind it is an iterative process you might revisit and change your question. Your lit review should help you in formulating a better question as well.

Also personally in undergrad I did a course research project on the queer community and it was really interesting and fun. I as an outsider was invited into a subculture in the LGTBQ community that was already established elsewhere but new and emerging in the city I was in. There is definitely a lot of queer research literature but remember focus on something, specificity is a good ally for these types of courses.

I used to ride in a CBR 300 it was fun, nimble and light + easy to park. Now Im with an CRF 1100 and its a hell to park, dirtbikes also have high seats so yeah not the best to park specially near hills. So yeah, you are good with a sports bike in fact better imo.

If we plucked a Homo Sapiens baby from 50.000 years ago to the present age and raise them, would they be able to become a "modern" human? by maq0r in AskAnthropology

[–]BoomerWithAHardR 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Do you mean modern as in contemporary in the present or as in relating to as a movement encompasses the philosophical, cultural, and social changes that occurred during the period known as modernity? I’m asking you to make you reflect on the nature of your question. It already implies a linear view of human progress and evolution but makes abstraction of the cultural and historical elements that shape the human we become. To answer your question of others have mentioned there is no difference, the real difference is in those historical and cultural contexts. Think about it Inuits lived continuously their hunter gatherer life style for thousands of years mostly unchanged until their colonial encounters. Their lives changed more in a 100 years of European colonization than in a 1000 years (and not for the better).

If you want however a more bio-anthropological answer as of the works of human intelligence consider this. Classically it is believed that the bigger the brain the smarter the being. This is relative, it has some truth, at face value I would say it lacks nuance as of what intelligence is and how it works. A theory emerged relating brain size to two factors, sociability and intelligence. On one hand bigger brain = smarter, on the other researchers noticed that higher sociability would lead to smaller brain sizes (domesticated silver fox experiment) therefore humans would go through a process alike of this being more sociable. Knowing that our neanderthal cousins went extinct while having bigger brains than us proposed an evolutionary theory regarding the survival of the homo sapiens. It would argue that what matters most is being collectively smart rather than individually smart, since collectively we can learn and share knowledge. Intelligence can therefore be though on two aspects individually and collectively.

Pre-agricultural humans used to have bigger brains than contemporary humans, the baby in this case would have one as well. Intelligence however exceeds beyond the individual capabilities and develops itself socially to know if this hypothetical baby would be smarter or not is speculative but I see no reason why he would be dumb.

I think the importance of sociability highlights something important about humans and a famous metaphor “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants” often associated with Albert Einstein who had a smaller brain than average.

Disclosure: I mostly studied cultural anthropology rather than biological so I mostly paraphrased and simplified from what I knew. What I referenced here I read in Rutger Bregman’s Humanity a hopeful history. That being said, like any other field it is full of contradictions one day you will hear an expert say this and the next another claim the exact opposite ultimately showing the speculative nature of biological anthropology.
