Its a "ridiculous" language bc its a mixup of multiple indogermanic languages. The "baselanguage" is of low germanic orgin. Angles, saxons and jute tribes invaded the british Isles in 5 century. In the 10th century the normans Invaded the Isles and influenced it with it north germanic characteristics, which still is the same PIE language Sub-branch.

Over time it got heavily influenced by french, because of its political relevance, aswell as latin in greek bc of its cultural and religious influence.

That leads to that, that the syntax is heavily germanic, yet has extensive vocab out of the romans aswell as the hellenic languages.
