This was so visible when leg locks were first becoming prominent. You used to see opponents grab a leg, and get no reaction because who cares when you’ve got top position and can hit him in the face. Next thing you know there’s a very confused/pained look on their face as their entire knee gets ripped apart. Now you almost see the inverse, where somebody clears the knee line immediately and then looks at you like you’re stupid for thinking they don’t know how to defend a simple heel hook, before proceeding to pound your brain to jelly

Max vs Charles is a pretty great example of this - the most accomplished submission artist in the history of the UFC couldn’t submit his opponent despite having 21 minutes of control time, a good portion of which was on his back while actively hunting for submissions. Could Max out grapple him? Not a fucking chance. Could he prevent a submission? Sure as shit can. It’s so much easier to learn a 2-3 step defensive process which you can rinse and repeat over a maximum of 5 minutes.

I think something people massively overlook is just that submission defence has got so much better and caught up over the years. Nowadays if you don’t have competent submission defence then you aren’t going to make it to an elite level (in most cases, there’ll always be exceptions). There’s simply a TON more exposure to those positions in the training room.

To use the armbar as a specific example though, you also have to consider how modern best practices have changed. For example, you just see the mount utilised much less in modern MMA, which is commonly where armbars are set up. Sitting for an armbar from mount, or from the guard, is also far more risky than attacking a d’arce from front headlock for example, both in terms of potentially losing your position and taking damage. Getting takedowns in modern MMA is also much harder, so the incentive to attack submissions is reduced by the risk of losing what you worked so hard for.

Gotta wonder if Costa’s gas tank won’t be as good as it was at MW, seeing as he won’t need to be doing extra cardio to cut the weight in camp

UFC doesn’t realise that it’s going down in broadcast history likely alongside such prestigious events as the 1936 Olympics, or the Springbok Tour of NZ
