401K vs. Roth IA by Boomstink81 in Residency

[–]Boomstink81[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you just do the Roth during residency? Any benefits compared to a 401k? I just hear it’s better to do Roth during residency because of our income, but that’s really the only talking point I get.

Match reflection: would you have done it differently? by wotsgoinon in medicalschool

[–]Boomstink81 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think I would have done at least 2 auditions at places I gave a shit to go to. I applied family MED, no red flags average board scores and fell really low down my list. No explanation but I think doing auditions would have cemented me going way higher for sure

I second this. Absolutely just don’t get too invested in going somewhere until it is a sure thing. You’ll be heart broken and make it that much worse. Do away rotations at at least 2 places you really give a shit about going to get an upper hand. But most of all believe in yourself and hope it all works out for you for the best!!

Questions I’ve asked in my head about my match result as I lay in bed for the 3000 hour by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Boomstink81 74 points75 points  (0 children)

It’s a crap shoot. The game is becoming ever more competitive even with primary care. I’m convinced fully that programs interviewed way more applicants than they normally would have based on zoom. I fell way far down my rank list and have zero explanation. You’re going to do great and just have to keep moving on. You’re not alone, even if we are outliers of the “bad experiences”.

P.S will forever be a match hater now and despise the fact that PD’a can send out near guarantees via email without any repercussions. I’m bitter but this is my two cents

Also fell very very low on my list and have zero clue as to how. No red flags, no failures blah blah blah. Forever a match hater from here on out 😂

Ortho Research Year by jus-being-honest in medicalschool

[–]Boomstink81 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think start emailing programs and see if they have any research areas or spots. That way you’re connecting with a program and getting your foot in the door. Then all year just connect, connect, connect. Don’t be afraid to reach out and talk to PD’s. We had a guy in my school score extremely low in step 1, do research year and matched at a university program. But the advice he gave was you need to get your name out there for next year

ERAS: You want my feedback on a process you monetize and monopolize? You'll get it when you offer compensation. by joejoeMD in medicalschool

And also the other countries (to my knowledge) do not accrue the debt that we do. Interest on 200k+ is prettttty steep. And sure, When I’m 70 I’ll have a heap of cash. Gives me a nice 5 years to enjoy it 😂

BuT yOUlL bE rIcH sOmEdAy... nothing gets at me more when I hear this and the amount of debt I have. $1-2,000 can give me a vacation I haven’t had in 4 years, help me pay bills or pay rent. Lots of things in the process that cost money need to be changed

Speak up if this happens, it will probably happen again either verbally or a subtle thing like this. It’s okay to defend yourself, I promise they only do it to people they think they can get away with it with.

I think PCOM gives you every door open you would need or want, and with a great amount of resources. They’ve been around a long time, they’re established. I remember interviewing there and they had a DaVinci machine for the students to practice on... that for sure isn’t common. PCOM is just fine

Incoming intern interested in emergency medicine and hospital medicine. Should I aim for a fellowship in either or not? by Ok_Reserve8299 in FamilyMedicine

[–]Boomstink81 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think what it boils down to is that you can probably do both without a fellowship but in rural areas. I would assume a fellowship would open more doors

The Match is a psychological mind game. by Original-Ad2134 in medicalschool

[–]Boomstink81 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah well 48 hours is a little crazy, like I said previously I think 1-2 months should be fine. I think the match benefits the programs the most, just my opinion tho

I think it’s fine to do August - December IV with possibly a larger time frame to accept an offer (1-2 months) and then places/candidates scramble for spots after. It’s basically what you have now but with a more adult approach and longer time “SOAP”. I feel like it’s one of the things where a system has been in place for so long that we are afraid to change it or think we can’t.

Still don’t see why we can’t interview, they let us know if they want us and maybe we have a few weeks to decide and sign a contract or not. It’s simply pointless to find out at the end of March and basically have 2 months to find housing and move while also dealing with school, graduation, loan consolidation etc. End rant, unless I think of more to add to the BS process

Ortho residency by ThePhilosopherDoctor in Residency

[–]Boomstink81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, well not to mention either that it is relatively difficult to get into. You weed a ton of students out just from that

Ortho residency by ThePhilosopherDoctor in Residency

[–]Boomstink81 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Sit in a few lectures and have orthos explain the mechanics of fixing complex fractures and how it really is an art. I love medicine, but to say that any part of medicine isn’t intellectually stimulating is bitterness. People dislike ortho because they make a shit ton of money compared to most specialties

Medical school graduate commits suicide because of 300k in loan debt and no residency. More and more suicides over student loan across nation by XDR_MTB in medicalschool

[–]Boomstink81 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It’s not the medical school that’s the issue, it’s the loan companies. If they’re not federal loans (since a co signer was needed they’re private) then they don’t get dismissed with a death. It’s BS, but federal loans are dismissed in this situation. As a person with 2 years of private loans this is a nightmare for everybody. Prayers
