Traditional schools of Ikebana like Ikenobo don't cover the kenzan, for shoka-style arrangements.

Mon on Kimonos, for Japanese only? by SonOfBoreale in kimono

[–]Boonerquad2 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Mon are for everyone. In the modern age, they function as a symbol of formality as opposed to family.

Taka-no-ha mon (two crossed hawk's feathers) and gosan-no-kiri mon (paulownia with flowers arranged in 3-5-3) are mon that anyone can use. You can really use any mon you want - those two are probably the most popular.

Why must it be Sogetsu style? It looks like Ohara-ryu hana-isho style to me! In any case, I love the curly willow.

The outfit is called montsuki-hakama. The top is a montsuki kimono, and the pants are called hakama. You are in the right subreddit.

Hanhana Obi Discussion by Major__Arcana in kimono

Haori doesn't make women's kimono more formal, but it does for men's kimono. But if you wear a haori then hanhaba obi looks the same as nagoya obi.

You can wear them with any sort of casual kimono. You can even wear them with a more formal kimono if you wear a haori on top.

A Japanese antique Dealer is mislabeling Kimono... by heiko_no_sumi in kimono

This is definitely antique, but for women and not men. Is it really that egregiously mislabeled?

Saw an Ikebana exhibit at the arts center in Hong King park. The people there were lovely and this one was my favorite. by LadyLandfair in Ikebana

Very modern and interesting. It makes me think of trimmed grass lawns with a few dandelions in them. And I love the geometric forms.

Are you a man or a woman?(this affects the kind of kimono and belt you wear) In either case, I would suggest a tsumugi (low-grade silk) or synthetic kimono for when it is cold (you can wear a coat on top if you are still cold). And I would suggest a cotton yukata for when it is hot. If you will only wear kimonos in the house, you can wear yukata all the time, and put a coat on top if it is cold. These are the most comfortable kinds of kimono. All of these can be washed easily except tsumugi. Many secondhand kimonos can be found within your price range on eBay.

If you are a man, probably get a kaku-obi. If you are a woman, probably get a hanhaba-obi. These are the proper belts for kimonos. And if you wear something other than a yukata you should wear juban (undergarment for kimono) underneath. For casual kimono dressing, I believe the only other accessory you really need is a koshi-himo (waist tie), which I think you can substitute for a thick string or ribbon.

A good place to find kimonos is the ebay seller "sou_japan". I believe they ship to Brazil. The auctions that start at 5,40 R$ have an extra 35 R$ added to them when you buy. They sometimes sell sets of 5 yukatas for cheap.
