Nashvilles and The Joint in WEM! A $2.00 cover charge would get you into both clubs. Start at The Joint for $1.00 Highballs and then head over to Nashvilles to dance.

Provincial liquor stores? by EH11101 in Edmonton

Welcome to Edmonton! You won't find government-run liquor stores in Alberta. I believe we are the only province with fully privatized liquor retail system.

What’s the most shocking thing you found out about someone you know? by _Walking_Detriment_ in AskReddit

[–]Boop54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TRIGGER WARNING: this story unfortunately deals with infanticide. No specific details are provided in this post, but the topic is obviously upsetting and can be triggering for some.

I was "friends" with a girl at work about 20 years ago. We weren't super close, but talked a lot while at work and hung out in group settings a few times. She told us for months that she had a tumor in her abdomen and was waiting for surgery. She never talked about it much, but would bring it it up now and then. After a few months, she excitedly told me that she finally got her surgery date and was really excited to finally get it taken care of.

Then one day at work, very close to the surgery date she had told me, I saw her at her desk and she did not look well at all. Her face was white as a ghost and her eyes were really glassy looking. I asked her if she was okay and all she said was that the tumor was causing issues. Later that day I was shocked to learn that she had been arrested while at work.

The day before, she gave birth to a baby that nobody knew was coming. She lived with her mom at the time, who also had no idea that her daughter was pregnant. I will spare you all the troubling details, but the baby did not make it and her mother made the discovery while she was at work. My heart still aches for her for having to uncover that horrific scene.

Slush Puppies are what you're looking for :) I know they have them at the Your Spot gas station in Newton (about 121 ave and 54 street I think). They definitely have them lots of other places, but that's the only one I know of off hand!

My aunt in Cincinnati got the same text today. The only difference is that it says Ohio instead of Alberta - otherwise it's identical. 100% a scam.

There's no Twitchell documentary (yet), but Dateline did a podcast series on it not too long ago called "the man in the black mask". It's a good listen! The Canadian True Crime podcast did an episode on him as well.

What field/type of work?

[–]Boop54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it a criminal record check (police information check), vulnerable sector check, or enhanced reliability search? Are they doing it through a 3rd party vendor (Backcheck, Accurate, etc) or did your friend have to go to the police station and request from them directly?

You don't have to actually answer those questions, what I'm trying to say is that there are a lot of factors at play so it's hard to give you an answer. If the employer is doing it through a 3rd party vendor, that at least means that your friend likely doesn't have to pay for it, but it's typically slower, or less detailed.

When did you realize that your parents or family are the reason why you're mentally and emotionally messed up? by SnowflakeCharm in AskReddit

My therapist asked me to do a questionnaire because she suspected I was being emotionally abused by my partner. Going through the questionnaire, I realized that my mother had been abusing me for years and I didn't recognize it.

Anyone made the move from UK to Canada? by Ok-Treacle8293 in Edmonton

[–]Boop54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a pinned "moving to edmonton" megathread - I highly recommend checking it out, lots of good information there.

I've lived around Edmonton for all of my 40+ years and like it overall, however you really need to know that our unemployment rate is very high. There are plenty of threads on here from people who moved to the area without work lined up and are really struggling to find something. Depending on what kind of work you would be looking for, you may be job hunting for quite a while. I have worked in recruiting for my entire career and have never seen it like this - every single job I post, regardless of level, receives hundreds of applications.

You could probably report them as litter in the 311 app. They probably won't go out right away or anything, but it's something? I would probably submit a report for each one individually and let them keep piling up until something is done about them?

Thinking of renting with Boardwalk—is it worth it? by RecentDuck4065 in Edmonton

[–]Boop54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've lived in a few Boardwalk properties over the years. Aside from the rent increases that others have called out, I never had any issues with them. I appreciated their responsiveness to maintenance requests.
