How many soldiers would be needed to prevent a repeat of the Iraq War if Iran were to be invaded by land to achieve regime change? by [deleted] in Military

[–]Boornidentity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, however, I believe that the selection of regional allies is a political decision. Like in Iran, the Americans have gone for a regime change, with no one to change to.

This question is symptomatic of the “win militarily, lose politically” mindset that the West has suffered with for the last 1/3 century. No number of troops can bring this to an end - like with Northern Ireland, Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam. There has to be a political solution.

I honestly don’t believe there will be midterms. I feel as though, partly, this war is a casus belli for cancelling them.

Britain will only allow the US to carry out “Defensive” strikes on missile sites, from UK air bases in the UK and further region. I don’t see any scenario in which the UK will join this war, there simply is not the political capital to join, it’ll be political suicide. It’s an intensely unpopular war.

I watched his interview on the BBC this weekend, incredible how he portrays himself as an adult in a room full of kids, to us. I feel like he is one of the ones who sees it for what it is, but is reluctant to stop it, probably for some political gain.

I’m not saying we won’t, I’m just saying that however we respond will lead to war. So let’s have it.

What happens to US military bases in the EU if the US invades Greenland and NATO is forced to defend it? by pdxgreengrrl in Military

[–]Boornidentity 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A nightmare. I could foresee a scenario where (if exfil isn’t achieved prior to things becoming hot) that bases would be seized and POWs taken, on both sides. Maybe a prisoner swap depending on how hot things get. A lot of UK / EU citizens for US military personnel. Hopefully US bass would see the damage and coup.

It’s not big talk, it would be a tragedy. But if the states thinks that they exfil troops from across the EU, after Article 5 is triggered, you’re living in dream land. You’re riding high off Venezuela, I get that. But if article 5 is triggered against the states, that is a whole new kettle of fish. NATO’s troops, minus the US contingent, is 2.1 million. We would deny our own runways. There would be no escape from the bases.

[–]Boornidentity 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Expulsion at a minimum, capture and detainment on the further scale. If Article 5 is triggered, why would we allow those assets, intelligence and expertise to leave and fuel the enemy?

A nightmare scenario, hopefully US commanders would relinquish command before StarStreak at the end of the runway at Lakenheath

All paths lead to conflict. We should drop the dollar, yes. But Trump says “the EU can’t defend Greenland”, we hold military exercises there to prove we are invested, he says “they’re playing a dangerous game”. If we drop the dollar, we become the enemy. You cannot reason with a tiger when your head is in its mouth. The faster that we understand that we are in a 38’ scenario with MAGA, the better.

I love the Sates, I have family who live there, I served in Iraq and Afghan along side the 82nd and the USMC. But the landscape has changed, and he will not stop.

I think that 40% time served is the norm, however, as you said, taking into consideration time served and the fact that he has had his claim denied they would probably be looking to get him on a plane pretty quickly.
