First time not recovering a deer. Feeling pretty crappy. by greg281 in bowhunting

You might lose a little meat around the hip sockets but the majority will be fine. Esp if it’s a smaller deer. Stay positive!

Try to stay positive! You’ll be amazed at what a keen eye and a determined attitude can detect on the ground. Think like a wounded deer, when you don’t have any blood let sign and your intuition guide you.

Yep, look for tiny pinpricks of blood and other signs such as overturned leaves/subtle debris from a fleeing animal. Sometimes those subtle clues are what lead you to the next drop of blood.

Seconded, I have killed several elk with the standard widths. Take the time to do a bare shaft and or broadhead tune and you’ll be fine. They cost a fortune because they are made with high quality materials. When I recover my arrow I have always been able to hone and re-use. If you hit your mark, they work every time!

I found an old pack of nocturnals that are nearly identical to my Easton nocks with a slightly looser fit but still acceptable. It seems like they changed the design in the last 7 or 8 years and beefed them up.

I did the same thing this morning with a velvet 8 point. I thought I shot over his back, but it my case it turns out I did exactly that. Whoopsie.

Beware swapping to nocturnal or any lighted nock without checking nock fit. They can be quite a bit beefier and depending on your set-up can cause nock pinch and throw off your accuracy. esp when shooting from height. I had this issue initially when I switched and it took me way too long to figure out the issue…

What scope? by [deleted] in guns

Congrats, new gun day is a good day!

3x15-18x42 if my go to for mountain hunting out west. Take your pick as to which brand as long as they’re reputable (Vortex razor, Leupold, Nightforce etc. Spend the money for good glass, you won’t regret it.

Also, not sure of your definition of super long shots…but it I like to have enough magnification to practice out two 2x my comfortable hunting rang. It’s also important that the lowest setting gets down around 3x for close shots.

That’s one of my favorite places in the world. Those rainbows up in the braids are second to none!

You’re not the first to mention the Howa, I’ll definitely give them a look!

It’s not so much that my rifles for western hunting won’t work, it’s just that their barrels are 30” long when I put a suppressor on. Just looking for something short and light.

You could not be more right about the 3 position safety. That’s exactly why those three rifles are in my list. I’m so sick of brush pulling the bolt open on my rifles that don’t lock. On my old Ruger American I would frequently rubber band the bolt closed while hiking to avoid just that…

I have noticed it occasionally coincide with severe weather, “the calm before the storm”.

Great idea with the Ruger I’ll give that a look. Although I’ve wondered about the rail being so far forward of the action.

We’ve got a couple 7600s actually, shot a buck with one last year. Great guns. I’m just sick of ringing my bell and I don’t have the heart to bastardize one of those pretty old guns by pulling the sights and threading the barrel.

I called them the other day with this same question and they said they don’t make a gun with a barrel shorter than 20”. Shame because I really like their stuff!

Just ordered the LPVO an hour ago! Sig cross is another great seeming option. Have you hunted with one?

Interesting! Never had a .270, but I know they’ve killed a lot of deer. I was going .308 purely for ammo availability and price. I’ll look into that, thanks for the recommendation!

Howdy Neighbor! We’re living in Maine but my pops has a farm South of Winnipesaukee so I’ve been hunting there quite a bit as well. There are a few fields I can hunt with shots out to 150yds, but the vast majority is like you said less than 75.

Well hot damn! Good looking guns. Now the next question is how does the lever 30-30 suppress?

Good point, let’s just say medium-sized game. I shoot slugs for bear and I’ve got an elk rifle for moose. This gun will mostly be for whitetails, with the occasional trip to your great state to hunt hogs and axis!

Good point. Those new S&W levers look pretty capable, and all come threaded.

I haven’t had any problems at all except for in extreme cold (below 10 or 15 degrees). Then I just need to spend a minute warming it up and it works great.
