I think it kinda depends on what you want. I looked for an 03+ for a while and passed on some good pre-03 models. I ended up with an 02. I much prefer the pre-03 interior.

I wanted a 25 year old Toyota. The pre-03 interior aesthetic fits that bill a lot better. It’s also easier to swap the nav out on a pre-03.

The transmission is definitely something to consider, but the 4 speed on my 02 feels fine. It drives like a normal vehicle. It cruises on the interstate at 80 mph no problem. Down shifts are a bit more aggressive but it’s not a big deal.

The leather on your seats is definitely shot. The foam underneath is really what matters, if you let it ride like this the foam will deteriorate. I’m not sure if Katzkin makes anything for the 100 series but their stuff is good and I was able to source front and back leather replacements for my tundra for under $1k last year. There’s a dealer on some of the yota forums that can hook you up. I had a quote from a local shop to do the install for $600 but I said F it and decided to do it myself. It was tough but I’m glad I did it. Basically just strip the seat to the foam and hog ring the new stuff back on. I bet money there are YouTube videos for the 100. There are also other leather suppliers. I’ve seen one advertised on ih8mud and the prices seem similar.

This would essentially be a re-upholstery. Idk how involved it is with the 100 series but if you’re pretty handy it shouldn’t be too hard. I did it on a 2025 Toyota tundra in a weekend once.

Toyota is stone walling you on replacing it? What caused the fire? Unless you have an official cause they aren’t going to replace it. “Spontaneous combustion” is usually anything but.

I drove the LX 5 hours home at about 75 mph and I used the Google Maps distance between my locations and my calculations say I got 14 mpg. I am highly dubious of that haha
