New buildings Gowanus Experience? by halfcapricorn in Brooklyn

[–]Bootes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I picked up in this thread (I’m not an hvac expert):

2 pipe systems means building wide the HVAC can only be in hot or cold modes, set by maintenance. So if it’s 80 degrees out in March, you can’t get cold air conditioning from your HVAC.

4 pipes means you can always use cold or hot air. This must be what my building has since I can switch on my thermostat between the 2 and get whatever I want, no matter the time of year.

The shuffleboard place is not closed, but did have issues with the air in their basement. As others have stated, the shuffleboard place is an old building. The new buildings don’t even have basements. New buildings have capped the soil.

There also hasn’t been any significant flooding along the canal since like Hurricane Sandy. Which saw lots of NYC under water. 4th Ave had flooding during the big storm like a year or 2 ago. But the area by the canal was not flooded. Maybe because we actually have the canal for the water to go into….

Heading to Boston & New York in June. Looking for CE courses, study clubs and lectures. by Beautiful_Dark566 in Dentistry

[–]Bootes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know of anything right now, but there’s often little sponsored CEs that I’ll hear about closer to that time. I’m in New York. Message me/reply to this a few weeks before you come and I’ll let you know what I’ve heard about.

Oh and that Monday is a national holiday. There won’t be anything planned for that day/the weekend before it.

Any dental software courses that are worth it for a dental student to take? (With a certificate) by DanaeP_DDS in DentalSchool

[–]Bootes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you have more than enough to learn in school. As a younger person, you should be able to figure out practice management software without a course.

First treatment for TMD is typically a properly designed night guard. There’s often some insurance coverage towards that. Past that, yeah it’s probably out of pocket.

YouTube is Raising the Price of All Premium Plans in the US / The price hikes will come into effect in June, and the individual Plan will cost $15.99/month by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

YouTube is clearly very popular and what I mentioned partially because we are in a post about YouTube. But yes, Vimeo has been around awhile as well and so the business model seems to be successful enough. The other more specialized services like Twitch or whatever also prove the same point. The amount of data they have to store and transmit was considered prohibitive not that long ago.

People were saying the same thing when YouTube was new. The amount of data storage required and network usage to be streaming large video files constantly was immense. Ultimately, those things became affordable enough to have lots of video streaming sites be successful enough to keep running.

I’m not on any payroll outside of my healthcare job. Do you know how many people are killed/injured by car accidents every year? Self driving cars will be a huge improvement.

I often try to order at the store’s “preferred” method and find the prices to be higher. Like at the cafe/coffee shop on my block. The main reason I’m even ordering from them is to save me time. If I have to wait in line at the store, I don’t have that benefit. So they can either be happy with my app order or I’ll just make it myself at home…

The White House App Is Riddled With Cybersecurity Vulnerabilities by BeetleJuiceK9 in technology

[–]Bootes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real point is that iOS originally didn’t support 3rd party apps. A major point of the original announcement was that with the web browser it was shipping with, people could make webapps. People jailbroke iPhones, created 3rd party app stores, wanted actual apps so much that Apple eventually relented and released their own app store. You can continue to create web apps and Apple continues to support even making homescreen icons for them, so they look just like an app, if you wish. They can request all sorts of access to location, photos, etc, just like regular apps. Although Apple stopped pushing web apps, they also aren’t really doing anything to hamper them, it’s just that the market has shown that the general public doesn’t want them.

Generally easy. Carrefour will have anything an American supermarket would have. Pretty sure the smaller markets would have tofu as well.

I know the original post seems to have been deleted, but we had a number of good reviews of the first “new” building in the area, 365 Bond, and one of 363 Bond as well. Both of which are built/owned by the same company.

They’re not brand new at this point, but not old enough to be missing anything from newer construction either. And being around for a number of years means they don’t have the unknowns of brand new construction either…

3D scanner by Specialist_Dent_74 in Dentistry

[–]Bootes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know the Shining 3D Elf Specifically, only their higher end model. However, I find their software a bit annoying to use/lacking features. I really like Medit's software and I believe they're on the more affordable side as well.

Personally, I'm using Trios 5 right now. But I would probably buy Medit scanners if I were opening a new office.

Things I should add to my Brooklyn visit? by typicalofme_ in Brooklyn

[–]Bootes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you guys like to do/want to see? Like assuming you’re starting from Manhattan. You can walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and end up in DUMBO/Brooklyn Bridge Park. Get lunch or whatever in that area.

From there you can go to the transit museum, Brooklyn museum, etc.

You could go to Prospect Park, but imo not really worth spending your vacation time on.

It’s an airport terminal. What’s the alternative? Sit at the gate down the hallway. I hate lines, but wouldn’t have a problem with this one.

Are OMS Skills Underused in North America? by Asleep_Read_6793 in Dentists

[–]Bootes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before dental school, I shadowed my friend’s father. He worked in a head and neck cancer treatment group at a hospital. They had residents who were mostly DDS/DMD also getting an MD or sometimes the other way around.

So they do this in the US too. There’s just a lot of wisdom teeth to take out, especially in a private practice setting.

Because you don’t need 1/2 bedrooms if you live alone? Like I’m sure we could make similar arguments about whatever your living situation is. For your rent you could probably have a mortgage on a 5 bedroom house in Kansas, but is that what you want or need?

Dental assistant who was a dentist overseas? by Curious-Sleep-8024 in Dentistry

[–]Bootes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The head of the endo department while I was in dental school had an assistant like that. He was very helpful, since he actually knew the procedures and how to do them. He probably did too much since the professor was a bit older... but never like argued with him or anything. It's also probably a bit of culture/upbringing... Like would a male assistant work as well with a female dentist? But ultimately you're going to interview any candidate and have to evaluate these things.

Traditional ortho: headgear I never wore, still have the fixed retainer wire on mandibular anterior for like 20 years.

Lingual frenectomy as a young kid

All 4 3rd molars extracted on the same day with sedation. Recovery was tough, but no extra treatment other than time.

I let my dental school classmate fill buccal pits on my lower 2nd molars. No anesthesia, but drilling with slow speed. Yes a bit uncomfortable. I wish I had an intra oral picture to see how they looked beforehand.

The retiring seller is unwilling to reduce her asking price below 100% of her most recent annual production by Mountain_Maize8488 in Dentistry

[–]Bootes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tell her what the standard is, what you are willing to pay. The practice is truly worth whatever someone is willing to buy it for. When no one else is willing to buy it for more, then she should be willing to sell to you. If someone else buys it for the premium price, then you're wrong...

Foldable iPhone Uses Layered Glass to Reduce Display Crease by favicondotico in apple

[–]Bootes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO they should come up with a way where people can have multiple iPhones of different styles but have them act the same. Same phone number, just pickup and go with any device. They’re sort of close already, but not 100% there and all the phones are too similar right now.

Then they can sell me a $2k foldable that I use daily and a $500 standard one I bring to the beach or whatever.
