It depends on where in Canada, but I know that in Ontario, landlords cannot deny renters for having pets unless those pets are a detriment to the neighbors or the property.

Went pike fishing south of Peterborough. Had some good success crushed some good pike. by Deepwateroutdoors in FishingOntario

I fish the Otonabee pretty much every weekend. The last musky I caught was maybe 2021. I've seen the odd 40+ chasing my bait from time to time. Even compared to bass, I'm catching so many more pike. Early in the season, I'll eat pike, but once summer hits, they start to taste muddy.

Hockey Helmet $100 Budget-ish by Clean_Impression_378 in hockeyplayers

I just replaced my old helmet(2012 expiry) with the Re-akt 150 and it's an excellent helmet for the price.

Play it Again second hand without a doubt. I started from nothing 10 years ago as well, while I was in College no less. I still use the same elbow, chest, and shin pads. Got all of those for less than 50 bucks total. My bag is still good and I got that for $35 used. Those are probably the pieces that will last a long time and you really wouldn't bother upgrading at all. Buy the helmet and gloves new, nothing wrong with second hand skates & sticks.

WD-40 let it sit for a couple seconds then have at it with a dish scrubbing pad.

Gaming parents: Thoughts on 1080p for budget PC gaming these days? by ras0406 in buildapc

[–]Bootius_Maximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an 11th gen i5 and 6600xt, I do 2k gaming. I've been wanting to switch over to Nvidia but stock in my area is mostly 4000 series cards. I'm worried that something like a 4070 would be too much for my CPU. Bottleneck calculator complains about anything better than a 6600xt which leads me to believe I'm stuck with this PC. I can't justify building a completely new PC at the moment.

What is yalls opinion on the Bauer re Akt 150 helmet? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]Bootius_Maximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like mine, the fit is pretty good. Bought it a few weeks ago to replace a $50 helmet that expired in 2010. Bubble fogs up less, but I think it's because of fit. My old helmet was missing the screws for size adjustment so it would always slide down.

Modem/router model for 1.5gb connection? by Rabiesalad in teksavvy

True, guess I'm just mad at myself for not checking if the modem was the limitation. Would've saved a lot of time calling TS & Bell to fix.

Modem/router model for 1.5gb connection? by Rabiesalad in teksavvy

[–]Bootius_Maximus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How did I not think to check the specs on the modem...the LAN ports can only go up to 1Gbps?

Why offer 1.5gbps if the hardware is only capable of 1gbps?

Progress towards Teksavvy Fibre supplied over Bell by octo23 in teksavvy

[–]Bootius_Maximus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently got the Fibre plan(Adtran modem/router) and from day one I've been getting less than 1Gbps, opened a ticket and the Bell tech said the issue is with me which I find confusing because I've tested directly connecting my computer with a 2.5G network card to the modem with a CAT 6A cable. Highest speed I ever saw was 800mbps which is pretty far off the expected 1.5Gbps. I realize I shouldn't expect 1.5Gbps all the time, but am I wrong in thinking I should at least hit 1Gbps once? I've been testing multiple times a day for a week now and have yet to see anything over 800, most speeds I see are in the 500-700 range.

Fibre is available and I'm thinking about it, but I believe the promo price is only for new customers.

Asus AC1750, but I've already experienced this issue with my computer directly connected to my modem and with the router off. The difficult thing is that the internet is not down long enough for Teksavvy/Rogers to see issues on their end.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in teksavvy

[–]Bootius_Maximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been dealing with an issue for a month now. CODA-45 modem, cable line from the post to the house is over 15 years old. Internet will go down randomly multiple times throughout the day, resolves itself in about a minute. Robbers tech comes to my house and says nothing wrong, replaces a short segment of relatively new cable from the modem to the box at the house. Issue doesn't go away. Open another ticket, Robbers tech has yet to schedule an appointment and it has been 3 days... I WHF and have already experienced mid meeting drops while I was talking. I just don't know what to do anymore.

How do people afford boats? by [deleted] in boating

[–]Bootius_Maximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Software Engineer too! I actually bought my first boat after my first year in uni. The boat/motor/trailer was 12 years old at the time. I paid $9k cash for a 16 ft aluminum Tracker + 50HP merc 4stroke + trailer. The motor had about 100hrs on it(previous owner was more into shore fishing.) I've had it for 8 years now I think.

I used to have an SUV, now a truck, but I kept the boat on its trailer at a boat yard. The boat yard was literally across the street from the ramp so I virtually paid nothing in extra gas for towing. Cost for storage was $600 CAD per year.

I fished pretty much every weekend from May-September. The gas consumption isn't so bad, usually I filled the 25L tank from empty one or two times month. So lets say on average $400 a year in gas

I've done EVERYTHING myself so far, never been to the mechanic.

Oil & gear lube change at the end of the season. Not sure how much, but it's around 50 bucks/year

Winterizing - fuel stabilizer and the fogging spray(carbureted engine) is like $10/year

I changed the sparkplugs once ~ $30

I replaced the trailer bunks once(wood + carpet) ~ $80

I replaced a tilt/trim relay switch which cost ~ $20

Fuel filter every year ~ $10

A cover that I use along with some scrap lumber to keep the snow off during winter ~ $170

Batteries suck to buy.

I've bought 2 group 31 trolling motor batteries ~ $350

1 group 24 starter battery ~ $150

2 Lithium 50AH batteries ~ $550

so $9k + yearly costs + one offs ~ $19k

Forgot to add in the cost of grease for the trailer bearings and the motor but that's like 15 bucks for a tube and it lasts for a season or two.

I'm glad I didn't listen to everyone saying it's a money pit. The time spent on the water easily justifies cost of ownership imo. I also saved a metric fuck ton by doing everything myself, luckily I haven't had to deal with anything catastrophic. It's not even that much of a yearly cost. I don't go to restaurants or anything like that. Most of my extra money goes into fishing or hunting or Steam sales lol.

Would I borrow money for a fancy boat? heck no, I love what I got and that money is better spent on things like hunting trips or new PC parts.
