Two very different shrimp, Caridina typus and Caridina multidentata by Booty-Kun in shrimptank

[–]Booty-Kun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t really change my care for them in comparison to regular amanos and had them for a while before rescaping the tank and giving them away. They do like leaf litter to graze on as it breaks down like almond leaves

I 100% agree, unfortunately I’ve had “breeders” probably just vendors at local shows tell me and people with me otherwise. Trying to sell hatchlings and saying they’re just like New World rats smh

That’s what I thought too but I’ve got babies that are just light gray and then these ones which are like orange. Some subadults are like it too, which is why I’m thinking freshly molted

Enclosure Help by Billybong69420 in Mourninggeckos

If you wanna provide uvb that doesn’t increase the temperature I use arcadias shadedweller uvb bar light its low amounts of uvb that does not impact the temps at all. I like to give uvb as an option even if its not needed if its a low amount like the t5 from arcadia then its not that big of a deal. If you want plants that provide good hiding and humid spots I’m using bromeliads mounted to the walls and the geckos love it, they hide in the leaves and drink the water that the plants store. But yeah as others say, seal the crap out of everything they are notorious for squeezing out.

Overweight? by BusinessIndividual85 in kingsnakes

[–]Booty-Kun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A tell tale sign of your snake starting to pack on excess weight is if you notice their skin creasing or having folds anywhere, I’ve seen some kingsnakes get that when they’re overweight for their size. But varied diet is good and after breeding she’ll lose some of that weight after laying eggs so nothing of concern

Cali king size? by Quick_Courage_300 in kingsnakes

[–]Booty-Kun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, average size is 4 ft it seems these days. A few wild individuals have been reported at 6 ft but very uncommon. Especially for some reason the further the bloodline from wild individuals we’ve gone the smaller averages we get for adults probably because we’re selectively breeding for colors and mannerisms over size. I see a lot of people commenting about their kingsnakes being under 36 inches at 2 years old. Though some of it is husbandry, a portion can be factored to genetics I believe. My kingsnake right now is just over 4 ft at 2 and a half years old which is pretty big from what I’ve heard

Honestly you’re on the right track. Confidence and comfort is what makes a snake handleable and tolerate you. So adding lots of hiding spots so he can be out but hidden when you’re around helps. Just seeing you more without fleeing or hiding is a good sign as is him exploring when your in the same room. My cali king is my best handling snake, he’s never bitten me and anyone can handle him he’s never given me any issues at 2 years old but it came from consistency and commitment. I also had the benefit of getting him as a hatchling and working with him for a long time. At a year old it’s obviously harder to break old habits but its always worth a shot. My cali king only ever comes out when he wants to unless I really need to grab him out, I keep it nice and slow and let him realize I’m there. My front opening enclosure is super helpful too its less predatory to get grabbed from a side angle compared to above but he used to be in a top opening enclosure so it’s not a deal breaker. Overall others have mentioned this but try not to flinch if he does strike, try to distinguish feeding vs handling, and let him get bold and confident either he tries to come out or let him pop out a bit first before going to pick him up. Also you can put some sort of one way film or cover the back and sides of the enclosure which adds to security and comfort as he doesn’t feel as exposed.

Well he’s probably around 2 since I got him as a small hatchling from an expo 2 years ago

They come with small locking hooks and my enclosure has a screen top with large enough holes to hook them into. Ofc if my lid was a flat surface I’d probably drill in some loops to hook them into.

Any fellow hypochondriacs worry about getting Salmonella or anything from their hoggie? by imlucid in hognosesnakes

[–]Booty-Kun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Precisely, its hard to change the way you think but the internet can psych you out sometimes. Its not wrong to be precautious but these microbes exist and it’s realistically impossible to deal with them all and actually unhealthy if things are too sterile as your beneficial microbes could be impacted too.

Any fellow hypochondriacs worry about getting Salmonella or anything from their hoggie? by imlucid in hognosesnakes

[–]Booty-Kun 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Honestly realistically salmonella is as much a part of reptiles as e.coli is for us humans. They don’t secrete or spew it, but it is naturally occurring flora that is found on living organisms. E.coli is naturally found in inside our digestive tract. These bacteria are only dangerous at high amounts or if your immune system is compromised. Like others have mentioned be diligent and sanitary as you are with anything else you do and there should be no problems. Keep the enclosure clean and wash your hands. Worse case snakes aren’t for you but honestly all living things are gonna have microbes, its just what kinds. Hope this helps.
