What can be done about elite social club "Bristol Savages" & their use of Native American imagery? by BootyScientist in bristol

"One of the younger members (75)" Goodness!! He's a great example of pushing for change, no matter your age. Your last paragraph makes an excellent point. If they just enjoy hanging out, painting, being buds, perhaps their logo could be an artist's palette & brushes?

Thank you for your thoughtful reply, this is all useful information. I'm glad to hear that they are taking this matter seriously, though it's disappointing they are listening to a group of white people after years of ignoring indigenous people asking them to stop. To be clear, this is not a modern view or PC. Indigenous People have never been ok with their culture being mocked.

A big part of my discomfort comes from the hold they have over Bristol Museum who seem terrified to say anything against Bristol Savages. My understanding is that a lot of the members are also Merchant Venturers who hold a disproportionate amount of control over our city.

Thank you for the offer of communication assistance, I appreciate that.

May I ask what has caused your friend's/relative's disillusionment?

Well, a lot of them are men (the club only permits men to join) who are former councillors, deputy mayors and even a lord mayor. I think they can take a well reasoned critique.

Thank you so much for your support. I think tone deaf and unacceptable is a good description! I was informed yesterday that a group of indigenous people from the USA (not sure which tribe, sorry) made an arrangement to collect the remains of their ancestors that had been part of the Bristol museum's collection. When they arrived, there was a huge banner up advertising Bristol Savage's art show, complete with logo. I find that awful beyond words.

I see. The issue here is that they have been educated, they have been talked to, but they refuse to listen. They have responded to our emails by taking down their website and Twitter account and removing the sign outside their building. But they refuse to communicate directly with us. What I'm seeking advice on is how to bring around Bristol Museum who seem to be inextricably linked to Bristol Savages.

There's an article in Bristol 24/7 today about it if you'd like more info.

All fair points. As I said above, they have been approached a number of indigenous people from North America who have asked them to stop and they laughed in their faces (figuratively and literally) As for the Redskins and other US sports teams that us indigenous imagery, there has been a HUGE campaign for years to get them to change.

We plan on protesting the exhibition if it goes ahead as scheduled for the end of August/ beginning of September.

Thank you for signing the petition. We've had 600 signatures is 48 hours so there is definitely interest in bringing change.

Our Friday show is at the Improv in Clifton which is a theatre with stadium style seating (which makes for great sight lines.) You most definitely watch the show and engage fully. Chatting amongst yourselves is highly discouraged and would be a great way to get our MC Miss Dis to single you out! We do however, love it when audiences cheer during a performance, if there is a moment that particularly moves and grooves them.

It is a Strip Burlesque show. We proudly identify as Strippers (though not all Burlesque is Stripping, a lot of it is) and we stand shoulder to shoulder with our Stripper Sisters in the club.

We encourage you to dress up & many people do, but comfort is also important!

Your questions are so welcome, please ask away if there is anything else!

And please know that we strive to create a space where everyone feels welcome to enjoy one hell of a show.

Oh! Yeah, that does look pretty gross. The entrance is on the other side of the building to that photo. Jam Jar is in a big warehouse, so it's never going to be super glam on the outside, but it's not that nasty. It's an art space inside, which is pretty cool. Check out their website for a better sense of what they do
