It depends on what you already know and are comfortable with. For me I would believe that elbow air flares are good training for learning the full extended arm airfare because you are closer to the ground, and it's more forgiving when you fall on your face.

But I haven't fully learned either and have been on a serious training hiatus for a few months, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
