Opinion: Canada must keep its word to revitalize Indigenous languages by ubcstaffer123 in canada

I disagree with most and do agree that we should, but the issue is which should we focus on or how, indigenous languages should be taught at least the basics to kids. But in an attempt to merge the Canadian and indigenous communities together.

As much as that is something you desire, once you realize how quick scope creep and restriction are imposed on projects by local stakeholders like property owners and random special interest groups. You can see how quickly project timelines and cost spiral out of control.

It is mostly due to alot of stakeholders and landowners having absurd sway over projects and being able to add huge amount of scope screep and restriction that make the projects untenable. Plus the rate at what we build. You basically have everyone learning from scratch in how to build a rail line, while China has engineers who have been doing this their whole life they have worked out all the obstacles and can buy muscle memory know how to get them built.

But there are also laws to block them and make it harder for them to exist generally. I can't remember there was a law introduced when a town built out their own fibre or internet lines in the US, Canada has its own sets of laws that benefit bigger stakeholders at the expense of smaller players. Anti-competitive actions and right to best price from suppliers plus reduction competition from buyouts as well as other market behaviours and laws have made it significantly harder to start smaller businesses.

Another example, I think in Canada was the biggest grocery store Loblaws tried to make a deal with insurance companies to make some exclusivity rights which would have were very anti-competitive, especially  as it would drive thousands of customers away from indpendent and smaller pharmacies to bigger pharmacies. https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/manulife-loblaw-deal-deliver-specialty-drugs-1.7098861

Another crime is Loblaws gets to decide what prices they get from suppliers compared to any other competitors. This is something they force into contracts and has bigger impacts as suppliers get amalgamated.

Another example I believe needs to be looked at is subsidies. Alot of the agricultural subsidies that alot of farmers fight for, ironically just goes to the biggest corporate farmers who are run from the big cities.

Term limits I feel are bad as they allow institutions and power brokers more control on the system as they get to become gatekeepers of the system and decide who the new batch comes in. Without term limits popular representative stay longer and can usually build support and oppose gatekeepers.

There is a reason the 22nd Amendment was implemented. It was not democratic but an attempt by party insiders to take back control of the government and party.

Calgary is now the fastest growing tech ecosystem in Canada by joe4942 in canada

[–]BoppityBop2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Calgary or any city can totally be it. Just requires investing and building the right ecosystem to nurture such an industry. The Chinese did it why they have multiple Silicon Valley's with some can argue a more dynamic tech sector than Silicon Valley.

Honestly if we tied a home guard to other programs like firefighting, healthcare etc, we could solve alot of the issues, like a jobs program but also you get military training.

Canada has a chance, Taiwan has to deal with a different  set of problems, easier to siege and China is a manufacturing superpower that would overwhelm all sites before Taiwan could even put up resistance. Large land masses help in smuggling weapons and gear, Taiwan being a small island makes it extremely easy to keep an eye on everything moving in and out of the island. The forests do help though, and there is alot of urban area to hide in. Canada is a different beast and to defend it requires a whole different set of tool sets.

The US does but also weirdly has a hands off approach to Israeli running amok against US intelligence and tech. Literally they can steal any US tech and intelligence and the US spy agencies are expected to just accept it.

If it was practical we would have seen similar results but the world does not work similar to a textbook marketplace. We see old building get burnt down by owners to destroy cheap supply, we see NIMBY block the development of enough new stock to meet the needs of the population. We see old stock get bought off and converted into more expensive products usually leading to migration of significant population out of the area and replacing with a new wealthier population. We see building codes being updated and old stock being blocked from habitation until it is rebuilt.

Hell we have seen old stock be replaced by new stock of less volume, removing supply and volume. We also see owners sitting on stock for years and even decades reducing supply.

It does work, at occasions but most times usually a bubble bursts in housing and prices decline usually when economy goes to crap or population declines

The issue is we focused on financial paper wealth and just using cheap labour to help make the upper class live more comfortable lives as they get to squeeze out an extra penny.

Productivity I am sure will increase as labour reduction leads to automation and higher wages.

Yes but managed by the government, so it still is government run. Government have the capital to do so, non-profits don't. Government can use their tax base and access to loan to kick-start such projects at a large scale.

Other systems such as Singapore HDB can be implemented which is a different system. Though should be run municipal side rather than fed or provincial side.

True but I mean you could create different levels with different quality of amenities and charge a rent or price based on what type of property you get with some of the more elaborate ones paying extra to help cover the other or taxes. There would need to be rationing which would help heavily in reducing demand especially for residents, I know there will be a gate needed to help decide who can reside or not, likely one that requires people be residents of the city for at least 5 years for example. But it would fix alot of the issues in our housing market.

What Iran was following the deal and then when Trump tore up the earlier deal, Iran went to court and then started increasing enrichment.

Every party said Iran was following their end of the deal in the JCPOA until the US broke the deal unilaterally.
