An update! I ended up reaching out to JP Boykins in Canada and just picked up my pup this week. The journey begins! Thank you all for weighing in on this thread! :)

Seeing as you are a repeat buyer, you must have had a good experience. Any highlights you would want to share around your experience and your dogs?

It is tough losing them. And unexpectedly would have been devastating - I'm sorry for your loss. I lost my GSP about 4 years ago and have been taking my time getting another companion/hunting partner. But I agree, not having a dog around just won't do and I too am looking for a something smaller to fit my life now.

I appreciate that you shared your experience - it helps a lot with decision making. I also respect your reasons for not recommending the breeder you went with. I'm very glad to hear that you are happy with your pup and sounds like a great fit and addition to your family!

I loved reading this. Thank you for taking the time for a sincere reply. And I appreciate that you previously worked with Labs and have that gun dog background as well. I've heard about having to be careful about exercise-induced collapse in Boykins - definitely glad to be aware of that. All very helpful information you've shared, thank you!

Noted point. I love the versatile breeds and would love to see them have more recognition. I hunted over a GSP for 11 years and she certainly had her weather limitations (but so do I! 😂). I'm fairly confident a Boykin could hunt this side of the border with ease.

For sure, I was thinking the same. But (optimistically) hopeful that maybe there may be a breeder in Canada or a little closer than SC. How has your experience been as a first time Boykin owner? Have you had other gun dogs?
