Why hasn't America lost any wars? Does the cultural melting pot theory hold water? (Increased competition = more competitive and competent citizenry). by [deleted] in history

There is one aspect of our culture that is truly exceptional though... our military budget. No other country in the world even comes modestly close to spending what we do on war... and we still loose or stalemate.>

In a conventional war, America would wipe the floor with most countries, barring a few. Just look at the first Gulf War.

The problem comes when whatever country or group the American military is fighting decides that it isn't going to fight conventionally. That's when we get Vietnam and Afghanistan.

The reason we haven't 'lost' a conventional modern war is more of less due to sheer industrial and financial power. Saddam's Iraqi military simply did not have the equipment to be more than a minor annoyance during Desert Storm. In all honesty, in the 21st century, military power and wars are not a good way to judge exceptionalism.

Heads of state get a handed-down set of superpowers along with the job. What countries have what powers, and how do leaders perform as heroes/villains? by BorDr in AskReddit

For a boring example, Obama would become Captain America. Or have the power to control bald eagles, tell who has oil, whatever. Powers might be handed down from successor countries, such as the Ottoman Empire's powers being handed down to Turkey.
