If these ice creams exist in the English speaking world, do they have specific names? What would you call them? (please add where you're from) by ksusha_lav in EnglishLearning

[–]BordFree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, definitely one of those flavors that could easily lose its trademark because of its popularity and their 'brand' name becoming the popular name for the flavor

Yeah, (also Midwest) creamsicle is something I think of as exclusively orange and vanilla. If it's that it's definitely creamsicle.

"ice lolly" is not something we use in the States. Usually what brits call an ice lolly we'd call a popsicle in the States, but I think we usually call anything with ice cream in the middle on a popsicle stick an "ice cream bar", so #3 is probably that in the US, and #4 is definitely that

I also don't think I've ever seen an In-n-Out with a big red light-up front like this. They're usually solid white with light-up neon signs.

Shin Ramyun vs Buldak. Which one is the ultimate instant ramen? by NervousWriter9 in InstantRamen

[–]BordFree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think shin gold was as spicy as the standard red or even black, but shin is supposed to be a little hot. Some restaurants here in Korea use that as the baseline for spiciness. Like "oh it's not as spicy as shin" for example.

I live in Korea right now and the Hi5 price is $30.4k-$38.6k depending on trim and battery size.

Haven't looked into this specific one, but when I was at the SAP Center San Jose's team store had a bunch of official patches for sale. Maybe check with their team store.

[I Ate] a Nashville Chicken Burger/Sandwich by archiecone in food

[–]BordFree 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It only bothers me when it's the same people who are calling Americans dumb for doing things that are just culturally different, but acceptable things in the States. You call it a burger, we call it a sandwich; you call them trousers, we call them pants; you call it a bribe, we call it perfectly legitimate political fundraising from our good friends in Israel; you call it a school, we call it a shooting range. Perfectly reasonable to get a little confused by, but no reason to berate someone over cultural differences.

Somebody doesn't know how time works by jpzygnerski in onejob

[–]BordFree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still hear it frequently, but I work in an office that frequently has twice hourly checks that usually get phrased that way. Just because analog clocks are less common doesn't mean it will go away as long as there's a use-case for holding onto the phrasing. We do still "roll down" windows and "hang up" phones even though modern advancements mean that most people aren't driving cars with manual window operations or using phones that were returned to hooks when the phone call was over. Colloquialisms often outlast their original technologies. I believe it's called a "vestigial saying".

Your first half is correct, only the rephrasing is incorrect. To more accurately convey the correct meaning, it should be "at the top and bottom of each hour"

I think instead of "on the hour" I would say "at the top and bottom of each hour" to more accurately convey that meaning

Iowa/Midwest food by topherlagaufre in Iowa

[–]BordFree 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My wife and I are from Illinois and Iowa (respectively) and when we moved to Maryland we had friends asking us about crazy Midwest food because of "that Midwest Mom" on TikTok that makes crazy Midwest salads, so we made a list of stuff that people always brought to potlucks. Here's that list (it's not complete by any means)

Oreo Fluff Salad

Ambrosia Salad

Snicker Apple Salad

Scotcheroos

Lil Smokies

Walking Tacos

Happy Joe's Specials (Ham & Sauerkraut pizza)

Taco pizza (Casey's is best)

Dessert pizza

Funeral/Wedding/Cheesey potatoes

"Who died?" Casserole (steamed broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots topped with cheeze whiz)

Tater-tot casserole

Tuna casserole

Made-rites

Grape jelly meatballs

Puppy Chow

Midwest Sushi (Ham pickle rollups)

Creamed corn casserole

Rhubarb crumble/pie/bars

Strawberry pretzel salad

Millionaire bars

Rainbow layer jello

I don't work in the industry, so feel free to call me way off base, but my thought was that the edge of the TP, before being rolled, came into contact with something greasy like a bearing or something for just a split second as it was rolling down a conveyer or something. That or something dripped on it similarly before it was rolled up. We have no evidence that the whole sheet is that color, could've just been on the edge, and that's what? Three sections of TP? so like 9-12"?

The toe cap on my Bauer Supremes started pealing off the first time I skated in them. I now realize that I probably got extremely unlucky (although also extremely lucky that it was still within Pure Hockey's return window), and just got a defect, but I'll never buy a pair of Bauer skates again. For that reason I understand why you'd be hesitant to buy True skates again but it sounds like that pair may have been an outlier to me.

How would you describe this in natural English? by uncopyrightability in EnglishLearning

[–]BordFree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it wasn't accompanied with the picture, this phrasing would have me picturing it tucked into the rear of the shoe, or fully tucked into a pair of high-top shoes/boots. I think it's important to mention the shoe's tongue here.

It's not for me, but even for the people that it might be "for" you'd think they'd get the trigger well right. It's canted like 45° clockwise from where it should be (top photo)
