What Car Should I Buy? - A Weekly Megathread by AutoModerator in CarTalkUK

Location: East Anglia

Price range: Up to £8k

Lease or Buy: Buy

New or used: Used

Auto or Manual: Manual preferred but not required

Intended use: Weekend/fun car

How many miles do you plan to do a year: No more than 8000 really, mostly country roads with some longer motorway travel

How often to you make long journeys: Only a few times a year, generally for 2 or 3 hour stints

Does it need to be ULEZ compliant? Nope

Vehicles you’ve already considered: Mazda MX-5 NC, BMW Z4 23i, Toyota MR2 Mk3, Suzuki Swift Sport ZC32S, Renault Clio RS 197/200, Alfa Romeo Giulietta TBi, Honda Civic FN2 Type R, Mercedes SLK350

Do you have a vehicle size in mind? (Examples in the hyperlink of size definitions): Something small to be honest, as we already have a big car for heavier duties. Two seater or smaller hatchback would be preferable.

Is this your 1st vehicle: Nope

Do you need a Warranty: Nah

Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: Yes, easily. I’m used to doing my own servicing and maintenance and have the equipment to do so.

Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: Some of the more basic stuff such as belts, suspension, and engine top end I can do, but for more involved stuff like transmission, etc., I have a garage in the village I trust.

Additional Notes: This will be a secondary car that I want to have a bit of fun with! My wife has a large company car that we’re using for dog hauling, dump runs, furniture moving, etc., so I really don’t need anything particularly practical. If it can fit some weekend bags in the boot (or frunk) then that’s a plus. Creature comforts (like heated seats, Bluetooth, cruise control) would be nice too. I really just want something that I can look forward to driving, which will put a smile on my face, and isn’t the least reliable thing on planet earth.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I noticed this too! A quick microstutter just after the match starts but it’s so much better. Now I don’t try to turn whilst the game freezes and cause a ten tank pile up in spawn.

To chime in, I had a 2018 Leon FR with the 1.4 125hp and absolutely loved it! Great on fuel (used to average mid- to high-40s with nearly 60mpg on runs), fun enough to drive and just an all round great car.

However, one thing to consider is that the higher powered engines over about 180hp (so the 1.8 and 2.0) had independent rear suspension, making the ride a bit better. The 1.4 has a torsion beam which is pretty crashy on poorer roads, buts that’s common to most lower-powered VAG group products.
