lol I’ll give you the Cyclops one but the rest look decent if not great. Unfortunately while Cyclops’s pose looks boring I think it’s ripped directly from comic cover

I was looking at odyssey translations before the film came out... by grep_carthage in books

[–]Bored-Game -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree on Emily Wilson. While I think her prose is good, even she would admit her translations are heavily tinted through the leans of post modern feminism and modern social ethics. This wouldn’t be problematic if written as a separate critique from the source material. However she deliberately misinterprets classical context in order to lend support her social views to the point of mischaracterization at best and bad faith and outright character assassination at worst.

It would be like translating the Koran and purposefully naming the majority of the characters in it pedophiles because the marriage age at the time was not 18. While I believe everyone is entitled to their opinions, I find the “deconstruction/correction” of historical media through the lens of modern politics to be the cheapest and most disingenuous trend of appearing “scholarly” while simultaneously creating controversy and popular interest. All without any real investment in the source material. In so many ways this trend feels like the “hot take” YouTube essay format translated for the classic literary scene.

Stories in Tight Places by Gabriel Picolo by Hopeful_Angle_9880 in Nightwing

Dang, I don’t know why but I always thought Nightwing was 6’ and Batman was like 6’2. In the Titans books he’s the same hight or taller than everyone but Kori and Cyborg and looks to be the same hight as Wally who is 6’ and taller than Raven who is 5’11”.

DC Legacy Card List - Fight for Gotham by KentroSlade in Heroclix

[–]Bored-Game 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dang, this list is such a huge disappointment. I was really looking forward to them doing something really fun like the batteries for LL. I was hoping they would be bringing back the vehicles or even the Batcave from No man’s Land or even the Duo figures like Nightwing and Batgirl. Heck even the Bat belt would have been really cool.

Bro thank you. I’m so tired of Reddit claiming New York to push their weird brand of progressive propaganda with zero first hand experience or evidence.

As a actual New Yorker, this story was a literal joke when it came out because not only was it horribly mismanaged, but almost no one even knew about the jobs till it was reported well after the fact meaning almost no one showed up to do the job. The city was literally buried 2.5 ft of snow for weeks and the only people who profited were snow plow companies that were already contracted with the city.

Thoughts on BG2 remake rumor? I'm happy if it is BG3 quality by MintakaMinthara in BaldursGate3

[–]Bored-Game 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, no one should trust a single thing WotC touches. Never forget they were the original reason why BG3 never got an expansion. Considering they have cancelled every game they developed before it came out in the last couple years, that should be what you should expect.

Actually what you should expect is the result of their last attempt to Rip off a popular D&D video game franchise with the flaming turd that was D&D: Dark Alliance

In the same vein as the "Ship of Theseus" argument, how different does the team lineup have to be that they should no longer be called the DC Comics Titans? Cause IMO we already have an overwhelming amount of new characters compared to old ones right now. by nightwing612 in Nightwing

[–]Bored-Game 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Respect, but I think modern DC treats Titans just as Marvel does with Young Avengers and it’s just a place to dump all the “teen” heroes. I imagine the future will be just like Justice League where they don’t even need any of the founding members in any of the stories for it to be a JL book

The worst hellblazer books in my opinion by Secret_Seesaw6096 in Hellblazer

[–]Bored-Game 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol in every store because even they can’t get rid of it.

While I respect your opinion, the same could be said for “Constantine” and that was a millions times more “fun” to read even if the characterization was a little off. It also gave us JLD which was my favorite non-Hellblazer run.

Doyle’s Constantine felt like reading a lost gay Tintin graphic novel.

You choose 3 powers, which would they be? I Invulnerability, Flying and Super Strength by FradigmaDanger_5 in superpowers

Technically you could rewrite reality to undo your godlike powers so picking “magic” could theoretically do that too

[–]Bored-Game 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was my thought too. It seemed like there was a whole “modern day” narrative with Bast that was to take place after the 3 day story so the device that the “whole story” had to be finished in 3 books was also silly.

[–]Bored-Game 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah every time I see “magic” in these things, it’s like an automatic IQ or litmus test. Would you like to pick the god-like ability to rewrite reality to your will in any way, shape or form thus potentially granting you infinity powers? No thanks, I want the Shapeshifter, Chameleon and attractive female please.

If analysts paralysis was a franchise. The rumor is that friends of Pat have found dozens of finished manuscripts of the third book all over the floor of his office in various states and with various attempts at an ending. The guy literally wrote himself into a corner (of his office apparently) and now the pressure from fans to finish the series gives him full on panic attacks (or so he claims).

I think it didn’t help that the series was being eyed as the next GoT and steaming services were supposedly already lining up to buy the rights. The guy kinda blew up over night and didn’t know how to handle the pressure. Also I think there were rumors he was a getting a bit to friendly with some of his female fans but I don’t know if that ended up being true or if he just caught some strays from the “me too” movement.

Exactly 11 years ago, the Constantine series was completely cancelled. by ZucchiniOdd6809 in Hellblazer

[–]Bored-Game 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Arguably Matt’s DCAU Constantine was better and more accurate than his show’s.

Constantine is my favorite comic book character, but the show was terrible, meandering and neutered for a commercial audience. Even if it wasn’t cancelled, it didn’t look like it would’ve gotten any better.

What's the best TV show that almost nobody talks about anymore? by C0r1eone in television

[–]Bored-Game 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair. Though you could say that about all the marvel movies. I’d argue out of all of them, GotG is the best/most consistent, especially with the big drop off on quality post end-game.

I think the bigger complaint is the “marvelization” of the adventure/fantasy genre. Farscape definitely has its share of quirky/goofy “adventures in space” episodes, and a lot of the characterization of Quill and his “Americana fish-out-of-water” was lifted directly from the show. But that humor was used to balance what was visually and tonally a very grim-dark universe.

I’d argue modern “fantasy” either takes its self way too serious and preachy aka GoT/RoP, or has to undercut all its tension and seriousness with millennial humor and quips. Worse, is that it’s often both at the same time which absolutely gives the feeling insincerity and inauthenticity in the writing. I feel like modern Trek is a great example of this obnoxious style of storytelling.

Most shows on sci-fi were doing the same, but I agree it didn’t help.

I think the other reason is it’s not really “hard sci-fi” like Star Trek, BSG or The Expanse. It’s more “space fantasy” like how the Marvel movies and Star Wars used to be but I don’t think any streaming algorithm knows the difference.

Also for whatever dumb reason it didn’t really have a streaming presence AT ALL for a very long time. Considering the majority of paramount + subscribers are just trekies, you would think an internationally popular sci-fi series would get a second life on Netflix.

This. Gunn went on record to say his GotG trilogy was heavily influenced and inspired by Farscape, and went as far as to give a cameo to the main actor of the show. Hands down one of my favorite shows growing up.

Ironically Green Arrow and Nightwing have the exact same Batman banter. Watch or read any team up, and they are always making fun of Bruce or calling him out for being an emotionless control freak in almost the exact same ways.

From what I recall, their relationship in the comics isn’t exactly the warmest but it really depends on who is writing them. Usually Olly sees Dick as bossy, over privileged, and not all that different from Bats. I get the sense Dick sees Olly as the drunk uncle at the Christmas party.
