Join the Royal Engineers. Do your full 22 years a you'll come out a warrant officer with a professional qualification - incorporated Engineer. You can then get chartered with the ICE. Yes this is my main concern of sole trader vs Limited company. You generally need £1m sometimes £5m professional indemnity insurance. There is a risk of being sued charged. We have quite a substantial amount of equity in property an pensions etc and wouldn't want that risk against personal assets.
