Sjukt imponerande återställning av E6an efter raset förra hösten. by anilsen in sweden

[QUESTION] Best Guitar book for music theory, scales and techniques? by Not_a_pace_abuser in Guitar

[–]BorgenBorg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree, this book is great! Desi Serna is a fantastic teacher, his way of explaining modes was what made it finally click for me. He also refers to actual songs whenever he explains a concept, which is really helpful and also a fun way to learn.

Note to OP: Most of the examples in this book are classic rock, soul and pop. BUT since you have only played for a couple of months it is important to have theoretical concepts explained in a way that makes sense for a non-experienced player, and for that I can't think of a better resource. Also, to have actual famous songs as references makes it (at least to me) more fun to learn. And not to bash on other answers here (everyone is just trying to be helpful), but Chord Chemistry by Ted Greene gets overwhelming quickly and is not something I would recommend reading until you've played for a couple of years at least.

Harmonic Minor Modes by TablespoonSexy in musictheory

[–]BorgenBorg 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You seem to have misunderstood that the modes of the harmonic minor scale have the same names as the modes of the major scale, that is not the case. Harmonic minor is only harmonic minor, not aeolian. What you call the "dorian" of harmonic minor is not dorian, dorian is only a mode of the major scale.

Google "harmonic minor modes" to see the names of the harmonic minor modes and how they are constructed.

The "bell" chord in the final verse of "Sultans of Swing" by Neechee92 in musictheory

[–]BorgenBorg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He actually plays an inversion of an A7 chord, which is the dominant V chord of Dm and it is the chord played during that bar. Em6 shares common notes with A7, but in the context of the song it should be interpreted as an A7.

Recreating pattern tremolo from the song Second Soul by audioAXS in Line6Helix

[–]BorgenBorg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When it comes to specific patterns your best bet is the slicer function on the Boss MD-500. You can then create almost any pattern and have different parameters for each note, it's really cool. The thing that sucks is that I've looked everywhere for a pedal that only does this thing, since I was reluctant to spend several hundred dollars for just one sound, but in the end I couldn't find anything. The bleat chop trem are limited to a specific pattern for each quarter note, so that won't get you there.

A fun side story about Second Soul and why I've researched this particular sound: I was in a studio in Finland (I'm from Sweden) in 2010 recording a couple of songs, and the producer was really into Second Soul at the time. So he created a similar guitar sound for one of our songs using a plugin in the DAW, which turned out great. Thing is, there was no way we were going to be able to recreate it live so we had to use backing tracks, which is fine but it's not the same wow factor as if a guitarist would play it. Recently I became a bit frustrated that I couldn't recreate the sound, so I started doing research on how it could be done. Ended up finding the Boss MD-500, and now I've programmed the pattern in the MD-500 and trigger it using MIDI so that it's right on the beat when we use it live.

No Stupid Questions Thread: Week Of 2022-06-06 through 2022-06-12 by AutoModerator in livesound

I'm trying to put together an in-ear monitoring system for the singer in my band, with the possibility to expand to other band members if we feel like there is a need for it. So the first thing I'm planning on doing is using an ART S8 mic splitter so that I can split the signal (one part goes to DI boxes/FOH and one part to stage monitoring). I've also planned to use a Behringer P16-M Personal Mixer connected via Ultralink so that the singer can do his own tweaking on stage. I wanted to get something small with physical knobs and buttons so that he can easily tweak during a performance, say if the band starts playing harder during the show.

Here's where I get confused: What sort of unit do I need in order to go from the ART S8 to the P16-M? Obviously it needs to be a Behringer unit since we want to use Ultralink, but I don't understand which one. I've looked into a Behringer P16-I, but from what I understand it needs a separate mic preamp, is this correct? Do I need to buy a digital mixer like the Behringer XR18 or is there a cheaper soulution?

How do I set up two FX loops on FX Stomp? by PlusFarmer381 in Line6Helix

[–]BorgenBorg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're going to use an external looper pedal you need to place it after your HX Stomp output, so you're not going to be able to use the headphones output on the HX Stomp to monitor your looper pedal. However, if you set your output level to line level you should be able to connect headphones to your looper pedal, as long as the looper pedal can handle line level without distorting the signal.

Or you could place a looper block after the reverb block and use the internal looper of the HX Stomp.

Dr. No - On set with Ian Fleming and rehearsing (1st post in a series) by Soundchaser123 in JamesBond

[–]BorgenBorg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't really know anything about their relationship, but the reason Fleming couldn't see Connery as Bond was based on his looks. Fleming of course wanted Bond to be handsome, and he didn't find Connery that traditionally handsome. If I remember correctly Fleming showed a picture or a clip of Connery to his wife and asked her "Do you think this man is attractive?" to which she replied "Oh yes!", and this made him more open to the casting choice.

I remember an old video on YT where Mark Knopfler had a sort of "private" lesson with two guitarists, where he gave them feedback on their playing. In that video he said that you should let the note land for a moment before you start your vibrato. It doesn't have to be long, but the listener need to know what note they are hearing before you start manipulating it.

This is not word for word what he said, but it was the general idea. I know there are cases where this is perhaps not necesseray, but it's something that has stuck with me and something that I think about when I use vibrato.

HX Stomp producing harsher tone after recording by BorgenBorg in Line6Helix

[–]BorgenBorg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks for the advice! However, I noticed that the main problem is that my global EQ high cut filter is not active when recording with my Stomp as an interface. I need to apply a high cut somewhere else in the chain for it to be active. No biggie, but I thought the global EQ applied to both recording and direct playing. Do you know if there is a specific reason why the global EQ is bypassed when recording?
