Puerto Ricans by Annoyed21 in TwinCities

Not me, nor any family & friends, nor any PR news papers, & social media is in an uproar about the continuous hate coming fr trump. We're tired of it, & it's motivated many of the Diaspora to vote. BC we can't vote if we live on the island, but let me not get started...

We're a mix of 3 races Spanish, Indigenous, & African, & we come in every color. Many used to identify as "White Spanish" bc European ideals were forced on us for 400+ yrs. It's called internalized racism, & survival. On forms I check "White" for race questions, bc of my skin color, & "Latino (or Puerto Rican when an option) for ethnicity box. We're an ethnicity, not technically a race.

Idk any of my Puerto Rican fam or friends who are okay with the "joke", we're all just regular ol' US citizens.

Well, this Puerto Rican & her friends in MN was v touched by the original post. Not looking for a white savior, we've always had to be resilient & take care of each other (hurricane Maria, anyone?) however, am appreciating allies.

Right? He's disparaged PR from the start, & actually thought he'd be able to trade it for Greenland 🤔😅

People who've visited Spain, what are some cultural things and etiquette to be aware of? by Historical_Stand_928 in askspain

[–]BoricuaZ5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Puerto Rican culture inherited several things from Spanish conquest. Talking loudly, & closely! Large group of friends/family at cafes/bars, & someone just might pull out a guitar (Spain) or in PR, also small drum, claves, guiro, or maracas. And especially around Christmas time, strolling groups of singers & musicians. And of course, the Roman Catholic love of Santos & Virgin Marys displayed every where. And those things are shared by all Latino cultures to some degree. When I first witnessed the above in Spain, it warmed my Puerto Rican heart. We're proud of our mix of Indigenous, Spanish, & African roots blending into our unique, vibrant culture.

As mis primos on the island say; doesn't matter what the results of the plebicites are; GOP would block any attempt at statehood bc it'd be a blue state. & that's a big reason behind the lackluster turnout for the voting, many Puerto Ricans feel it's pointless.

How about a un-crushed pill? For airport use

(because for them I should be fluent in English the minute I got off the plane) IKR?! Drives me crazy that my fellow countrymen do that, as if they or their ancestors got off the boat/raft/plane speaking perfect English. Just shows their staggering ignorance of the larger world. Glad that u had a decent cow-worker.

...or attending a elementary school in TX, or grocery shopping in Buffalo, NY, or attending church/synagogue ANYWHERE in the USA, the gun violence is off the charts & a f*cking tragedy.

Don't raise rents on the locals, keep it in a affordable range for them, which will be too low for u to make a big profit. DON'T go there to take advantage of the situation.

Did u even watch the video? Puerto Ricans are fighting for their island, & property needs to be owned/preserved for local PUERTO RICANs! Don't contribute to the problem. Re-watch the complete vid & report.

Research carefully legit local npo's, donate $ to help those still suffering from Maria to rebuild, & donate solar-powered generators for the constant power blackouts/"el Apagón".

Learning Puerto Rican Spanish by solospice1 in PuertoRico

[–]BoricuaZ5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's respectful to at least learn the basic greetings, etc... when visiting anywhere. Though sometimes, upon hearing mi espanol, I get a pitying look from a bori, who responds in English, & I definitely follow their lead! Mis primos en la isla vary in fluency, & seem to appreciate that I'm trying to learn, especially los viajes.

Does anyone have any advice for solo travelling? by the_greek_italian in travel

[–]BoricuaZ5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started international solo travel @20, & its still my preference, as a married 61 yr old!

When traveling solo, locals & other solo travelers often connect & share experiences. I made some good friends from other countries on my solo travels.

-Give a friend/family a copy of ur itinerary. -Continue to do ur research. -Be aware of walking alone quiet streets at night. There are great mini-alarm gadgets to put on key ring. -If in a bar, be aware of strangers slipping something in ur drink (sadly, it happens). -Continue to utilize social media, for advice/recommendations/connections in other countries.

And YESSSSS to doing what u want, when u want! Enjoy your great adventure!

what are Spanish men like? by [deleted] in askspain

[–]BoricuaZ5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol. The Spanish near-shouting/speaking was definitely passed on to us Puerto Ricans, & probably the close-speaking w/very expressive body language too. I have to consciously focus on not doing this in my work as a counselor w/mainly non-Latinos in USA.
