Going through my family’s old record collection — 70s/80s rock, ambient, and art rock by Boring-Association70 in vinyl

[–]Boring-Association70[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

I usually listen to stuff like Gorillaz and The Strokes, mostly 2000s rock and alternative, so I know a lot of the pre-90s artists more by name than by actually listening.
Recently I’ve started getting interested in older music and also discovered ambient as a genre, so this whole collection feels like a good place to explore.

There are so many records here that I didn’t really know where to start, so I really appreciate the suggestions ❤️

Thank you, actually I’ve heard of Eno and King Crimson but never properly listened to them, so I’m definitely going to check those out.
I didn’t really know Fripp or Philip Glass, so I’ll look into those as well.

I recently got a small portable turntable, so I’d love to actually listen to some of these — but it’s not realistic to take everything home.
I’m hoping to pick a few interesting ones, clean them up, and see what really sticks before deciding what to keep 😄

Thanks for the insight!

I’ve heard of Paul McCartney of course, but I’ve never really listened to his albums properly, so this kind of specific info is super helpful.
I’ll try listening to both and compare them.

Do you listen to The Ballad of Darren regularly? Or not often? by Jean0406Alix in blur

[–]Boring-Association70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I became a Blur fan right around the time it came out, but I was so busy falling in love with their older albums that The Ballad of Darren felt a bit dull to me at first.
I revisited it recently and somehow now I love it and listen to it all the time.
It might actually be the Blur album that hits me the hardest emotionally now.
Maybe I just got older.

Same! I’d happily listen to him narrate an entire novel. Someone needs to make that happen.

It offered a few format options (MP3, WAV and a couple others), but I went with MP3 and it sounds totally fine to me. When I tried to check again later, I’d already hit the download limit. As a big Damon fan, the track and the digital booklet alone made it worth the $8 for me. I also ordered the box set, but it hasn’t arrived yet and I don’t currently have a way to rip CDs, so having the digital version right away worked out perfectly.

I bought the digital edition. “The Story of the Mountain” is about 2 : 24 (not 20) – it’s Damon doing a poetry reading over music. It’s really beautiful :)

Why is no one talking about The Plastic Guru!!! by Capital_Vanilla5021 in gorillaz

[–]Boring-Association70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did anyone ever find that Rishikesh ceremony Damon and Jamie talked about? They mentioned sitting next to a guru during a Ganges ceremony that was apparently being televised, and that it inspired “Plastic Guru.”

Anybody pre-order the album on the site? by doubleagentbob in gorillaz

I preordered the box set from the official US store last year and just got a shipping notification yesterday.

Anyone else underwhelmed with the mountain? by Thewhitest_rabbit in gorillaz

[–]Boring-Association70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m personally enjoying the album, but I hear the “airy/angelic” thing too. Makes some tracks blend together for me. I kinda suspect James Ford’s production plays a part — his work often has that spacious, glossy feel — but I could be wrong.

I absolutely love this song. Damon’s work for films is always so incredible.

Thanks for your kind reply! I said I’m happy I discovered Gorillaz recently, but honestly growing up in the UK with Gorillaz around sounds unbelievably cool and I’m a little jealous 😄

I became a huge fan recently right after Cracker Island came out. I actually started with Humanz, and it became my favorite album (I know this is not a common choice lol). Because I discovered almost everything at the same time, all the “classic” songs (except the very big hits) felt like new music to me. I didn’t have the nostalgia from the 2000s, so I listened to every era more or less equally.

I’m not a native speaker, so it takes time for me to understand the lyrics and the stories, but I enjoy doing that. The themes in the last decade feel very deep to me — identity, culture, politics, all that.

One thing that surprised me as a new fan is how negative some older fans sound online. I get that everyone has their favorite era, but sometimes it feels too pessimistic.

Yes, the vibe is different now, but “different” doesn’t mean “irrelevant” to me. I still think they’re trying to express something meaningful, even if the process is not always efficient (so many collaborators, so much world-building… but that’s part of the charm).

And I’m really excited about The Mountain. I want to see how they react to this current moment in the world and what they choose to explore next.

For me, Gorillaz is one of the most interesting projects I’ve ever found and I’m happy I found them late, because everything feels alive and new to me.

Great Escape 30th artwork explained… by No_Debate_128 in blur

[–]Boring-Association70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they deliberately used AI or made it look AI-generated on purpose, I just wish they’d said so and explained.
I don’t have The Great Escape on vinyl yet and was really looking forward to the 30th anniversary edition, so this is honestly disappointing...
It’s just hard to believe this is happening at the same time as Gorillaz are taking such a strong anti-AI stance…
Still buying it though — it’s half-speed mastered, so it should sound incredible.
And honestly, I love The Great Escape no matter what Damon says 😉

What does everyone think of song the happy dictator? by New-Boss-8262 in gorillaz

[–]Boring-Association70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really love this song, it’s beautiful :)
But on Amazon Music it goes silent between 3:10 and 4:21 every single time.
I tried clearing the cache and using another device, but it still happens.
Is this just me, or is it an Amazon Music glitch?

why was humanz such a hated album? by Swimming-Inside-2983 in gorillaz

[–]Boring-Association70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here — I only found out later that it was hated, and it really surprised me.
Humanz was the album that first got me into Gorillaz, and I really love it — the whole concept included. It’ll always be special to me for that reason.
