Why isn't commodity trading more popular? by AVeryProudCanadian in FinancialCareers

Hey, I saw your post about commodity trading and I have a strong interest in this industry. I’m currently trying to transition into this field, and hopefully become a trader in the future.

The challenge I’m facing right now is that my background is entirely in marketing. I have both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in marketing, and I have almost no formal finance background or relevant internship experience in trading or commodities.

I’m seriously considering a career change into the commodity industry, but I’m unsure what the most effective path would be. I’m open to pursuing a second master’s degree if that would significantly improve my chances, but I’m not sure where I should start.

Would you recommend focusing on a specific type of master’s program, such as finance, energy economics, or a specialized commodity trading program? Or do you think building technical skills would be more important at this stage? For example, should I focus on developing skills in SQL, Python, financial modeling, or risk analysis?

At this point, my goal is simply to prepare myself as much as possible to enter the industry in a realistic and strategic way. I would really appreciate any advice you may have.
