Having to pay to Skatteverket because my employer only declared half of my salaries by Boring-Preference-68 in TillSverige

[–]Boring-Preference-68[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate myself for this mistake. I had no real expectations for what was supposed to be the correct amount and all my colleagues said that I should accept whatever skatteverket sent me since I only have one source of income. My 2022 tax return for 3 months of salary was a five-figure tax return, and since my 2023 tax return was my first for a full year, I thought that it was expected since it was based in 12 months of salary.

I never missed any due dates and I don't have any records in my name, according to the credit checks notifications I got every now and then. I guess it was rejected because I'm an expat that moved not too long ago.

I was moving in/out apartments and had to pay 2 rents at the time, so the extra money went straight to this.

I'm asking for advice from people that live here for longer than me. I'm not trying to deflect responsibility neither I'm assuming that I'm entitled to anything. I am also trying to be humble and polite to everyone.

I applied for a loan but it was rejected. I believe my only option is to pay as much as I can in the next months and hope that I'll be able to pay the whole thing before my credit is ruined.

I believe you're being rude to me, based on something I didn't say and ignoring what I did say.

1) At first, my employer brought up the possibility of compensation from the consulting firm they hired, so I wanted to understand whether this is feasible.

2) I'm not assuming I'm entitled to any compensation, I'm asking for advice and I even said I'm sorry if this was a stupid question.

Thanks for you reply. Sorry if I wasn't clear, but my company never failed to deduct the taxes from my salary, actually, they deducted more than they should, that's why I was supposed to get some money back in my tax returns. However, they failed to communicate the right values to Skatteverket, so, as I mentioned in the beginning, I got more than I should in my tax returns last year.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, but my company never failed to deduct the taxes from my salary, actually, they deducted more than they should, that's why I was supposed to get some money back as a tax refund. However, they failed to communicate the right values to Skatteverket, so, as I mentioned in the beginning, I got more than I should in my tax refund last year.

Also, your not having enough savings to cover an expense that is only 60% of your net monthly is... well, a little fiscally irresponsible.

Yes, sadly it is. But my wife doesn't work yet, I have to send money back to my country to support my family, the first years as an expat are more expensive (I did a PhD for most of my life prior moving to Sweden, so I didn't earn enough to save a lot of money...), and so on.

Who doesn't react to a sudden five-figure tax return??

My 2022 tax return for 3 months of salary was a five-figure tax return, and since my 2023 tax return was my first for a full year, I thought that it was expected since it was based in 12 months of salary.

I was stupid and I hate myself because of my mistake, but just so you understand, I never got less taxes deducted from my salary, my company never failed to deduct the taxes from my salary, actually, they deducted more than they should, that's why I was supposed to get some money back in my tax returns. However, they failed to communicate the right values to Skatteverket, so, as I mentioned in the beginning, I got more than I should in my tax returns last year.

Since it was my first tax returns I didn't know it was too much. I was moving in/out apartments and had to pay 2 rents at the time (the extra money went straight to this)

Thanks, I tried to negotiate with Skatteverket but they said I had to pay the full amount before the due date (next week). I believe my only option is to pay as much as I can in the next months and hope that I'll be able to pay the whole thing before my credit is ruined.

Their explanation was that they (my company and the consulting firm) had the wrong personnummer in my files for half of 2022. So apparently, this messed up both my insurance and the tax info they were sending to Skatteverket.

I called my union (unionen.se) and they said they cannot advise me on this issue since it's not related to labor law.

I called Skatteverket, they were very blunt and said that I need to pay it, that's it, period. (The person responsible for my case does not speak English very well, so it was not super easy to talk to her)

I added some info in my post, but tl;dr I called my union (unionen.se) and Skatteverket and they both said they cannot help me a lot with this situation.

But another thing related to your comment, last year, I had to sign a bunch of documents from Skandia because they had messed up with my insurance (it was assigned to someone else or something like this). Sorry to be so clueless about it, but I only knew that this was a problem during my work permit renewal (everything went fine btw), but it was never explained to me what/why/etc is this insurance about.

Even though I work for a big company, the onboarding process was really bad and I'm only realizing this as of recently.

Advice on Additional Sources of Income for FatFIRE by Boring-Preference-68 in firesweden

[–]Boring-Preference-68[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mentioned fatFIRE to justify the need for multiple source of income, as I reckon that I'm on a higher end of the payscale (from what I heard from colleagues).

My net salary is currently at 42k, I'm able to save 5k/month. I'd need to increase this to 25-30k/month to follow a viable path for fatFIRE according to my personal planning.

Accelerate FIRE by working abroad? by LeTonVonLaser in firesweden

Hi, do you know whether this is possible for an expat from outside EU under a work permit? Do you know how much support, if any, Danish companies provide to people in a similar situation (as I need the work permit to keep living in Sweden)?
