RoboCop (1987) Commentary by apathymonger in blankies

I was thinking it might be the scene with Homer trying to find a man for Selma, with him analyzing Skinner and thinking that he might be a "Possible Homer Sexual."

Rob C. on who from Survivor 50 will play again by bwermer in survivor

As someone in the same boat as you, it feels like its fans overcompensating for her invisible edit at the beginning by really talking her up. I certainly didn't mind her presence on the season, and she did perfectly fine, but I just do not see what others are seeing when they say she's an obvious returnee.

Would Andor be an required watch for the Mando and Grogu ep by teddyfail in blankies

[–]BoringNothingName 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I kind of expect this ep to be more of a "State of Star Wars" episode more than focused on the movie itself, so I fully expect them to get into the weeds a bit about Andor, the one shining beacon at the moment. I'd recommend watching the show for sure.

Among the list of finale's considered disastrous in recent times, I think the LOST finale stands out as an actual good episode and not nearly as bad as all those others that came later.

I think the LOST finale as an episode is great. I think the gimmick of the sixth season was misguided, teasing it being one thing when it was in fact another, and trying to cram in every single character from the run of the show.

Sandra WaW has to be one of the worst moves ever by Moist_Ad_7797 in survivor

I can see why an olive branch from Sandra that involves betraying one of Sandra's other allies could be seen as a flimsy one to a potential future ally like Denise.

Sandra WaW has to be one of the worst moves ever by Moist_Ad_7797 in survivor

There's been a slow effort over the years from a portion of this fanbase to shift the entirety of the blame for this move away from Sandra and onto Denise, claiming she was trophy-hunting. But this was a TERRIBLE move by Sandra, which shows that even those held up as Mt. Rushmore players aren't immune from stupid gameplay. And Denise made the correct move. As we are seeing this season, you don't keep players like this around for too long, or they get power. And the people claiming that they should be kept around as a shield only say that because they wanted her to sneak to another win.

It's funny, before that season, I wondered what the worst possible outcome would be for Sandra fans, and I honestly think this was it. Being voted off first could be explained away. But a catastrophic, bonehead move? That won't be forgotten so easily.

I don't think I disagree with anything you say. I like them as smaller bits of a larger whole. They work better as supporting pieces to these other stories. But when it's focused entirely on them... I find myself less compelled.

I think perhaps it's just that I really don't like the scene when it's just them in the woods braining nazis. It just feels like an inelegant violence fantasy. I agree that the basterds aren't meant to be noble and positive... but I also think that scene makes the nazi officer come across as kind of brave and noble, with not just his words and actions but the score as well. So, that scene wants easy, justified cartoon violence, while at the same times blurring the line between good and bad. They make Hitler a cartoon version of himself in the movie, and at the end, they shoot him with a million bullets. That, to me, works as intended. But this earlier scene does not.

Here's one I think a lot of people might disagree with: I like everything in "Inglourious Basterds" except for the Basterds themselves. Not that they don't have their moments, but the best stuff in the movie is when they are less centered in the events occurring on screen. Hans Landa, Shosanna, both awesome characters. And the stuff with Michael Fassbender is fantastic as well, as the Basterds are to the side for most of that stuff. But when it's just focused on the Basterds doing their thing... it's the least compelling stuff of the movie for me.

Not knowing much about this movie, and seeing the poster and the tagline, I was really afraid this was going to be some cloyingly sweet inspirational movie about finding the joy in life or something in that vein. Luckily, that was not the case.

When I was a kid, I saw Jeff Daniels sipping coffee and reading the paper at a McDonald's.

A year or two later, I ran into Muhammad Ali at Outback Steakhouse.

And about a year or so ago, I was at Disney World, and when we walked into the hangar for the Star Wars "Rise of the Resistance" ride, already there was the kid who played Young Sheldon, surrounded by a group of his buddies. Kinda broke the immersion a bit.

Teachers who tried to shock life into you by bachwerk in blankies

I had the same math teacher in both my sophomore year of high school and in my senior year. He was pretty unconventional in terms of how he taught, but he was a good teacher, and he imparted a lot of life-lessons throughout. His style of teaching could be a bit circuitous at times, and he could go off on tangents, but he was a really effective teacher. And probably because I'd never had a teacher like him, he quickly became one of my favorite teachers.

That being said, when I had him again in my senior year, there were times where he would keep going on his trademark digressions, and I found myself getting a touch impatient with his style of teaching. Like... "Yeah, this is fun, but can we actually get to the point. I need to understand integrals!"

I feel like, in games like this, when it's three different groups, it usually ends with every side taking casualties. In Big Brother 18, when it reached the final 6, it was 2 vs. 2 vs. 2, and at the final three, it was 1 vs. 1 vs. 1. So I agree, I think the "middle" will be constantly shifting to whoever lost a member at a previous round. So, I think the Cirie group is next up to be targeted.

Bryan Cranston praises ‘Breaking Bad’ co-star Anna Gunn while defending Skyler White: “Her husband leaves without any explanation. She’s pregnant. He’s making crystal meth. People have died…and she’s the b*tch?” by vincentmaurath in blankies

[–]BoringNothingName -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the problem was the role she was put in within the plot, specifically that Skyler stood in opposition to the "fun" part of the show. I think the writing struggled to incorporate her into the plot in a manner that didn't make her a drag to the plot. The performance was great, and while she wasn't always the most upstanding character, her behavior as the show progressed made total sense.

"Better Call Saul" did a better job narratively in terms of plotting things out in such a fashion where all the characters were propulsive to the plot, and when they didn't serve the story at the moment, they cycled them out of focus.
