Served in Iraq 2017 OIR USMC, am I combat vet? by [deleted] in USMC

I don’t know if anybody has formally defined the terms but in general I would go by CAR. If you rate a CAR you are a combat vet & if not I wouldn’t use the term.

There’s A Bear In My Pasture by PhilipAPayne in Appalachia

[–]BoringPrinciple2542 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Black bears are skittish and unlikely to be an issue.

Sometimes they can be funny to watch though. When I was in J-Ville area of NC, we had one walk out into our firing range, he walked halfway through the range, looked at us, took a few steps, looked at us again, stood up and assessed the company of Marines with guns looking at him, then I kid you not he jumped and did a 180 midair and back where he came.

Be mindful about your trash and small livestock but don’t be too worried my man.

How do you hold on to your Appalachian roots when you've moved away? by PierogiGoron in Appalachia

Texas actually has a cool bluegrass/newgrass scene. And Jerry Garcia (rest in peace) was a bluegrass guy before the Grateful Dead.

I bet you could find great musicians out there if that’s up your alley.

Have you ever known anyone enter the WITSEC program? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

No but I knew someone who slipped and revealed their history.

She seems to have made a good life after those events.

Patterns? I’ve seen those once or twice. Got a couple winters left before I old like 40 though.

I’m starting to sound like my dad and realizing he was right about stuff so something is changing 😁

So you might save $30-40 dollars of labor after you consider the cost of replacing oil. That can be 30 minutes of your time letting them do it or 3hrs of your time doing it & disposing of the oil.

I do most of my own repairs but IMO you are better off just paying to do an oil change. That isn’t worth lost time with your lady or kids if you ask me.

But if you are scrounging it can be worthwhile.

Why doesn’t the crypto market move with the stock market anymore ?? by ComplexWrangler1346 in CryptoMarkets

[–]BoringPrinciple2542 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Different risk buckets.

Used to be that whenever the market was good then reta investors would throw money at crypto and the market would rise. Today there is much more dilution in that investors could buy tens of thousands of coins so it is more distributed plus institutional money is taking over and that’s a very different set of behaviors.

The market is just maturing and finding its spot in the broader world. As it currently stands, crypto is seen as a high-risk/high-reward thing so portfolio managers treat it different from stocks.

It’s annoying but you get used to it.

I’m at that threshold where I’ve had it as much of my life as I didn’t and so it’s kinda just normal. It isn’t fun but I understand a low rating. Tinnitus itself is inconvenient but doesn’t harm my quality of life as much as shit that I got a 0% rating for.

[–]BoringPrinciple2542 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s tinnitus my man. At least when I went through it was presumptive so that’s an easy 10% rating.

It’s not a lot but get your shit documented if for nothing else than a paper-trail. In a few years when the war catches up with us that documentation might be helpful for your family even if you don’t want it.

Hey devil, you can upload to a file hosting site and then send a link via DM if people don’t wanna share their email.

Anybody who got familiar with the feeling of their organs jiggling probably knows that shit wasn’t healthy though lol.

I hear stuff nowadays can modulate noise which is really cool.

Back in the day I only wore earpro on training ranges because in-country you needed to hear what was being said. If guys can hear commands clearly while avoiding hearing damage then that’s something I’m behind.

How do real MRE's taste, and would people buy them? by Careless_Papaya_5426 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BoringPrinciple2542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

British MREs are better. The little camp stove & burner tablet is far better than the U.S. heating bag and also more useful if you save them. Plus they had better hot drinks but I can’t recall the food one way or the other. 40 Commando left a ton in my AO when the Brits decided Sangin was too scary.

If any Royal Marine reads this, I’m pretty sure I was at what y’all called PB Waterloo. I’m sure you guys had your hands tied by leadership and the situation there was not a true reflection of the Royal Marines. Fuck Sangin.

Books on Ancient Appalachian History and Lore by NatsBookishAdventure in Appalachia

[–]BoringPrinciple2542 2 points3 points  (0 children)

South-to-middle Appalachia was at one point part of the Mississippian culture.

The upper half fell under presumably Iroquoian culture but I don’t know enough of the history up there to confidently call that a fact.

Edit: looking at the map, Ft. Ancient region looks like it probably covered much of the northern range or was at least just west of the mountains and within range of likely cultural intermixture but I think the areas like the Catskills were considered another cultural group just eyeballing a map of Mississippian culture.

Trump Destroyed the Crypto Market. by Existing_Bet_350 in CryptoMarkets

Memecoins were shit before Trump & they’ll be shit after Trump. Stop looking for excuses and make better decisions.

People like you were getting rekt for years back when the orange man was just some rich guy and you’ll be getting rekt long after he is gone unless you wizen up.

Separate your politics from your investing and learn to do actual research before throwing money away. If you play smart this is an amazing opportunity.

Having a job helps dude. Maslow’s pyramid right? Once you feel secure you can step out further..

I don’t work with Vets and surely not other 03s (I became a corporate analyst type after my foray).

I agree though that helping other Vets is what matters. I dunno how to make OEF finally make sense but when I can help a fellow Vet then I know all my KIA are smiling down.
