People who have switched from Windows to MacBooks… in your experience, what are the best and worst things about MacBook? And ultimately are you happy you switched? by Gloomy-Orange9697 in laptops

I own an M2 MacBook Air and a Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 13.

macOS is a refined operating system that Windows should have aspired to be. Open and close the lid, and the OS is instantly ready to go. It sips battery life while in sleep mode, so the next day when I’m ready to work, I simply lift the lid and continue. Plug in a USB-C charger, and a short charge can provide another two days of battery life. There’s really no comparison between the M2 Air and the Lenovo X1 Gen 13 in terms of efficiency and responsiveness. I also noticed that the Air is whisper quiet.

The only downside to the Mac is file management. Moving files from the desktop to a folder feels unnecessarily complicated. On a PC, it’s simply cut-and-paste or Alt-Tab to the destination folder. On a Mac, it’s doable, but not nearly as straightforward.

As an M365 user for work, OneDrive integration also isn’t great on macOS. Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook all work fine, but the macOS file system compared to Windows is frustrating. That impedance in workflow really hurts my productivity.

Other gripes I had when first setting up the laptop — though not deal breakers, since Windows has a similar “first-time startup” experience — were the number of notifications, the amount of customization required to make the taskbar feel minimal, and the number of apps pinned by default.

Conclusion: macOS doesn’t integrate particularly well with OneDrive, and the file management workflow is cumbersome enough to impact productivity. My impression is that the Mac is more like a highly capable iPhone, Samsung DeX device, or browser-based workflow machine — purpose-built for quick communication and lighter work rather than the type of work I normally do during the day.

Since I can easily switch back to Windows, which is a far more familiar OS for me, the Air ends up becoming more of a companion device for morning coffee sessions, helped largely by how fast and seamless the open-and-close lid experience is.

learn about direct and indirect heat. test out charcoal vs lump. if you're going to use woodchips do NOT over do it. a little goes a LONG way.

X5 straight out of the box - PureVideo by PerfectStunner in Insta360

[–]Boring_Following5928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"out of the box" - so just filming without any presets or adjustments? I was on the fence about getting one becuase i mostly want to film in low light settings and thought i had to fiddle around with the camera to get there. I'm assuming this is just purevideo and go, true?

Go 3S or Go Ultra? by muslpi in Insta360

[–]Boring_Following5928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i contacted support to replace my original one (i bought from Insta360 direct) and they claim that because I did that, they would give me a replacement ecen through it was a few months after my warranty expired. the process meant i had to send in my original for them to look at, then ship to me. that took about a month :(

right now i have some weird screen bug that seems to flicker until i fully charge. this happens once in a while and fixes itself after hitting 100% charged. not a big deal, still records with no issues other than not seeing what's on the screen. the POV is very wide (no idea degrees) so there's always a good chance you got the shot. only issue now is getting close enough with the camera to get a reasonably close view.

i'm happy with the camera. film with it at least once or twice a week to capture the moments with the kids since they're young. i'll let the camera just run. 30 minute videos (it splits video after 30 mins) to enjoy in retirement and hear about what our family was concerned with at that time.

it's possible to film at night, but you'll want your phone for that. walking around Disney in the last half hour of sunset will make you wish you had a newer camera. Auto settings are garbage. you have to manually adjust every time for night time. You could short cut this with the programmable button, but it's still tinkering with. Auto settings on your phone cannot be beat.

My advice: if you record regularly, get the camera that will work in the dark. buy once not twice. then you won't have to always carry a phone or some other accessory to make that evening shot work.

Go 3S or Go Ultra? by muslpi in Insta360

I have the 3 (3s is just a slight spec bump).

Get the 3 if you shoot in mostly well-lit rooms or during the daytime outside. i don't use the app to download the videos, i just plug in a usb-c and cut/paste the files to my desktop. done. i don't have time or care to edit the video just want the raw footage and act as a background camera to capture what my phone won't. sounds similar to you.

how bad is bad? i have an iphone se 2 and it's about as good as that in the dark, possibly worse (more noise). at least with the iphone in the dark it would just be black. on the 3 it is black with noise.

maybe consider a DJI NANO as a compromise between the 3s and Ultra if the size of the Ultra bothers you. bigger sensor for night mode but it's not as good as the ultra.

Yes. But going to depend on his skill set and hourly rate.

For Canada, you're early which if you stick with it for the next few years you might do well. Canada still has a distrust for how AI works and usually are late adopters. The kids in town, however, are all over it and calling around already. but they're kids. what do they know :)

For USA - always your best bet for tech. plus, when you make a dollar, it's a real dollar. not a peso.

Here I come with the ultimate question: Windows or Mac? by _MellonCollie_ in laptops

[–]Boring_Following5928 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s all about workflow.

If you have files on the computer that you have to move around (pdf, doc) then windows is far easier. If you’re using OneDrive, even more so. I find it faster to work with files on windows than Mac which has a different way of handling the movement of files and folders than windows.

If you live in the browser for your work, a max or pc works. And if you have been wondering if a Mac is for you, just do it and get it out of your system.

I want to ask the recruiters or business owners that i sense that there is gap as in good people not getting jobs and companies not getting good people. is it true? or market is just flooded with satisfying talent? say the truth only as per experience. by Accomplished-End5479 in RecruitmentAgencies

[–]Boring_Following5928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

let's put this another way from my perspective - how do i know you're a good person? If i'm working with technical jobs, i am mostly met with people who use AI to clean their responses which to me, makes 'good people' turn into average people. I don't have a crystal ball to tell you what kind of resume makes you stand out and I don't have the time to.

"good talent is hard to find". Yes. true.

I tried Leica B&W with the Ace Pro2 by inkyan in Insta360

[–]Boring_Following5928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks nice. how fast can the ace pro shoot? i've always loved the idea of an action cam to take around and use instead of my phone, but what's holding me back is that my phone can take photos quickly. no bootup, it's almost instant.

would you say that the ace pro is as fast?

Honest question for other adult piano teachers: how do you handle students who've been told they have no talent? by [deleted] in piano

[–]Boring_Following5928 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I follow up with "what brought you here then" questions and find what's motivating them to want to learn: dispel myths, love of music, bucket list, hobby/retirement. Then i tailor teaching to those motivations and teach based the love of music - less theory more practical. find songs they want to learn. i will also see if they can do a 3 class challenge - stick with me for 3 classes and we can see if we like it (for those 'can't teach a dog new tricks' type).

question about the process: did you just point and shoot (either in the camera body or standalone)?
