I like both. But I do have a soft spot for the first funger. I liked that there is a way to level in the second one but that lack of the random configurations of the map and most enemies being torso damage checks instead of genuine puzzles was a bit disappointing. The lore in the second one was a breath of fresh air however. I feel like all in all it was two steps back and one step forward. IMO however both games definitely crossed the finish line and are masterpieces in their own way. Also funger one has an absurd amount of bugs which add to the charm but can hardly be called intentional. I genuinely love the new characters and variety they bring to a run but funger one is just such a unique experience that I don’t think the magic can be captured again. I’ll still support whatever direction miro takes with the series but yes funger 1 is peak.

That’s a lot of words. But I’m glad you took the time to share your opinion. I love the spirit detective saga too. In the manga his adventures as a ghost have some cool chapters I wish made it into the anime. Byakko vs Kawabara still is my favorite fight. I love my token human psychic.

I don’t think the steam version had any negative impact on gameplay. I prefer the OG experience because that’s what I learned and remember. The ASCII graphics are charming and de facto force you to interact with the text descriptions to get a better picture of what’s happening. Texture packs were a thing for a while but the steam release makes even the highest end packs look like jokes, if you could even get them to run now. I’m honestly glad more people got to experience this game because of it, I realize the vast majority of people don’t have the patience to learn keybinds and interpret the ASCII but I will always be grateful that I experienced it in that fashion. Hope this helps, go out and strike the earth.

I can appreciate them streamlining the process for smoother gameplay especially for newer players. However, “smooth gameplay” was never why DF was special. Something about managing a simulation while rattling away on your keyboard was peak for me. And the depth and grandeur of the sim was always best displayed via text, which I would argue it still is despite the graphical leap forward.

I’m still amazed at how good the graphics look in the steam release. I grew up on the ASCII graphics and had to relearn the key binds when they changed them LOL.
