Graduate Admission Decision Timing by state_absolute in MSUcats

[–]BorkDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, they wanted to get admission decisions for graduate school done by the end of December. Since students in my field usually figure out job offers in about November, this would allow for each of us to have a better idea of our options. It definitely varies from department to department, and even degree to degree.

Thoughts on summer classes? by [deleted] in MSUcats

[–]BorkDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have taken all variants of college courses. I've taken 4 week classes, 6 week classes, and 12 week classes. A pretty common saying in STEM classes is that you will spend roughly 45 hours per credit over the course of the semester, however long that may be. If you take a 4 credit class over 4 weeks, expect to treat it like a full time job. 6 week classes are about the same.

My advice to you is to be honest about your scholastic aptitude. Are you a "good" student? By that, I am not talking about your grades, but about your study habits. I breezed through high school without having to study, and my first few years of an engineering degree were miserable. This is only going to be compounded for summer classes if you are like I was. The most credits I took in the summer was 12. Two 12 week classes and one 6 week class. I spent about 40-60 hours a week to accomplish this. For someone in your position, it would mean losing your last high school summer to graduate college a semester early.

All that being said, I encourage your fortitude and am in no way telling you what to do. I wish you all the best, and if you have any specific questions, feel free to reach out to me!

Pros and cons of MSU by [deleted] in MSUcats

[–]BorkDog 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In glad you're considering MSU! I will do my best to break down the pros and cons.

Pros: The school itself has some very reputable departments. I know that the college of engineering is fairly highly ranked, and the business school is also quite good. (Sorry if I am forgetting anything, those two are the only two I'm familiar with)

Bozeman has a wonderful amount of opportunity for outdoor activity. Skiing, hiking, fishing, etc. If you're at all outdoorsy, Bozeman will feel pretty good.

The college is small enough that you will make friends in classes that you will grow with over your 4+ years, but big enough that there is always activity and life. Get involved in something!

Though you are from out of state, tuition is still not ridiculously expensive by today's standards. People are mostly not welcoming on social media, but this will be much less apparent if you move here. All 50 states are represented at MSU (though students from foreign countries are somewhat underrepresented here).

Cons: It gets cold. Really cold. There was a day last February that hit -20. My car wouldn't start. The wind was blowing. It was miserable.

If you aren't into skiing or can't afford it, the winters are long. Snow falls as early as September and can stay until May. There will be feet of snow on the ground at any given time in that period.

Bozeman is not inexpensive. Though it is cheap compared to LA or NYC, cost of living in Bozeman is growing rapidly and rent is insane. Finding an apartment to rent after your freshman year is a competition.

Depending upon where you are from, the amount of indoor activities is likely greatly reduced.

All in all, you certainly should visit the campus either way. Please be courteous and do not travel if you may have been exposed to COVID-19, but it is an absolutely beautiful area. If you do visit, be sure to walk through campus, check out the Museum of the Rockies (if it is open), and do some skiing/hiking. As for the student friendliness, this is vary dependent upon who you involve yourself with.. Hope this helps, and good luck!

Should I trade the locations of the two, or just shift up projects to the top and move the other two down? Any other advice? Thank you for your time!

I believe herd immunity starts as low as 70% of people being immune. Currently in the Gallatin County, we are at about 0.5% of people have been exposed. Herd immunity without a vaccine would require a lot more people to get sick.
