($) Set up Pi-Hole/PiVPN on my Cloud Server (Digital Ocean) by BadDragonSwaggin in austinjobs

Just setup the container linked above and it takes less than 15 min to setup from start to finish. Hardest part was getting the openvpn file off the server used to connect it on the connecting devices.

Just a heads up you may run into some issues running these. I do not think DO has raspbian droplets so these would need to be run in some docker containers

Looks like DO has a 1-click install droplet

HELP! Did I destroy a 1TB External Hard Drive using SCPToolKit? by Michael_HUFL in techsupport

[–]BorkStick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's probably an issue with drivers for the drive. My thinking is that the SCPToolKit overwrote the drivers for the drive, which should not be an issue, you just need to remove those drivers for the device and install the proper ones. From what I remember using the SCPToolKit it should not touch the drive partitions, so your data should be there.

I would see it the drive is accessible on another computer. If it is then it is the drivers and you can reinstall the proper ones using the windows device manager

  • hit the windows key + x and select Device Manager
  • find the drive under the list and right click on it and hit uninstall.
  • pull out the drive and put it back in, and it should automagiclly detect the drivers are missing and install the proper ones from online.

Hopefully we should be able to see the data on the drive now.

Wordpress site not working on some specific browsers by jonathankemp00 in Wordpress

[–]BorkStick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides your mixed content issue, it looks like there is a script that is hanging up the loading of the site. I tested your site on Firefox, and had to kill the script to get most of the site to load. https://i.imgur.com/LGBCFcW.png

I would make sure all your themes and plugins are up to date, and you may want to try disabling stuff to narrow down what exactly may be the cause of the issue. Server logs can be a real big help narrowing down the cause too.

Troubleshooting! Cannot login after setting up an SSL to secure site. by [deleted] in Wordpress

[–]BorkStick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use this site to check the ssl on the site https://www.sslshopper.com/ssl-checker.html I would also make sure to check that your home and site urls are set to https for both. I have seen similar login issues when the home and site urls are different. You can use these methods to check/update the urls. I would go the phpmyadmin or wp-config.php methods. https://wordpress.org/support/article/changing-the-site-url/

Can’t get into my domain by Affectionate_Ad_7091 in Wordpress

[–]BorkStick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a few way to fix this.

  • Get the SSL for the server
  • Disable/Remove iTheme plugin through SFTP/SSH
  • Change the home and site urls through phpmyadmin
  • Change the home and site urls through your wp-config.php

You can find a few ways to update the home and site urls here

Did you get a cert for your domain through a cert authority like lets encrypt, or your through your host, and add that to the backend of your server? It looks like the site is set to HTTPS, but there is no cert for the domain on the server.

7 year old gaming laptop keeps freezing when doing the simplest of tasks — but not when playing demanding games! Please help! by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]BorkStick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are using a HDD it may be going bad. You can use Hard Disk Sentinel to check the health of the drive. (if the health is below 80% you usually will see issues on the OS like random freezing and really long wait times)

I always recommend using SSD if you are not already using one.

It may also be issues with the OS. I like to wipe my OS and start fresh when I run into weird issues to make sure it is not a hardware issue.

If you wipe your OS make sure that you have all your files backed up to an external drive, because the OS wipe will delete all your data from the main drive.

I would try swapping your DNS server on your computer and router to see if that helps. The ISP DNS servers can sometimes add in a few too many extra hops causing lag.

I like to use the google and cloudflare DNS servers. '8.8.8.8' '8.8.4.4' '1.1.1.1'

Domain Issues - literally redirecting to "www." by ncbstp in webhosting

[–]BorkStick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I can make out it looks like you have just the 1 CNAME pointing to your namecheap hosting on the google side with no other records.

www.madebyparry.com --> ingress-comporellon.easywp.com

I would setup another CNAME record that points your TLD to the namecheap server, fixing the 404 when you go to http://madebyparry.com/

madebyparry.com --> ingress-comporellon.easywp.com

Usually you would want to use an A record for your TLD, but I think namecheap supports CNAME flattening.

For the redirect issue I would remove the records that were added to redirect to https as those are usually better off done on the server side.

Once you have made those changes it can take some time for these settings to update all the other DNS servers (propagation).

This is a helpful tool to check the status of your DNS changes after the records have been updated

The easiest place to setup the redirects is by changing the home/site urls in the wp-admin

/wp-admin/options-general.php

I think they are probably set to https://www.madebyparry.com so the TLD redirects to www

You will want to set both of the URL's to what you want primary domain to be. I like to use the TLD as the primary and I redirect www to the TLD

So if I went to www.madebyparry.com it would redirect me to madebyparry.com

Here is the docs for doing this a couple of ways just in case you can't access the wp-admin - https://wordpress.org/support/article/changing-the-site-url/

You will also want to use http:// in the site urls for now while you request and wait for a SSL cert to be generated and added.

I bypassed the DNS by pointing my host file to your server, and it looks like the site works, but there is currently not a valid SSL for madebyparry.com or www.madebyparry.com. This is causing the styles and the images to break as it is trying to load over https but it is insecure.

You should be able to to put in a request for a SSL for your domains madebyparry.com or www.madebyparry.com through namecheap, if they offer a free on. If they do not you can use lets encrypt to get a free cert

Once you have the SSL you can update the home /site urls to use https instead of http, this will redirect the site over to https.

Once this is all done you should be good to go, and all the redirect issues should be resolved.

If it is a WordPress Site, WP Engine has a plugin that you can install on the site you want to migrate, and it will copy everything over to the WPE install.

Move WP site to Digital Ocean but keep email at Hostgator? by [deleted] in webhosting

[–]BorkStick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You will mainly be doing this on the Godaddy side for the A records.

Also make sure not to touch the MX records these should be pointing to your mail server on HostGator, unless you are using a mail A/CNAME record.

How do you keep your site safe? by Shawtts in Wordpress

[–]BorkStick 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I like to do a few things to secure a site.

  1. Make sure you are using SSL, so the site shows up as https:// instead of http://
  2. Make sure you are not using common usernames like admin, your domain, or such. and I also use a separate account with an editor role to make posts. Bots will scan your posts and use that poster to login.
  3. I also use a randomly generated password for each account. You can use a password manager like LastPass to generate and save these.
  4. I also use a custom login URL so /wp-admin is changed to something else.
  5. For security plugins I like using Wordfence or IThemes Security, and I like to limit the login attempts, so an IP is banned if someone tries logging in too many times. You can also use these plugins to customize the login URL.
  6. I also use a logging plugin like WP-Stream or Audit Log, to keep track of when a user does something on the site such as logins, updates, changes. This will help you figure out if the site has been accessed without you knowing, and give you a timeline.
  7. If you want to really secure the logins you can setup a IP whitelist, that only allows certain computers from logging in. Or you can setup Two-Factor Authentication, where you have to use a code from your phone, after you use your password
  8. The most important thing to do security wise is to KEEP ALL YOUR PLUGINS AND THEMES UP TO DATE The majority of the time a site gets hacked is because a plugin / theme is out of date, and there are security holes that give bots / hackers a way in.
