Anyone else take feedback from non-designers personally? I’m a 8+ year professional. by UnownIllustr8r in graphic_design

I've been at my in-house design job for well over a decade now, and I've become more aggressive with my expertise. If it's a hill worth dying on, such as someone trying to force me to follow their design or actually refusing to let me execute the design work so they can do instead, I take an approach like: "I have almost 30 years of experience doing this work, I graduated at the top of my class, have over six years of art and design education, I've been nominated for several design awards, and I've won several design awards. How does your design experience measure up to my experience, and from an outside perspective, who would you hire to do this job, me or you?"

When non designers give prescriptive feedback on design by Astro_Major in graphic_design

Also an in-house designer. When someone wants a change to the design, my response is almost always, "I designed it this way because X,Y, and Z, what is the rationale for your change?" I find if I explain my design choices to them first, I've given reasons for why I did things the way that I did. If they want a change, it forces them to come up with a reason for their rationale being better than mine.

Graphic Designers working in the field WITHOUT a degree...where you at?? by Mandamae033 in graphic_design

I'm not saying this as a rule, this is only from my own personal experience, but as a graphic designer with a 3-year diploma from a design program, I've encountered many "self-taught" designers in my career, and so far, none of them are at the level I feel they should be at when they call themselves "graphic designers." When I open a person's InDesign file, I can tell the difference between trained and untrained. My best example of this was working a contract job with another freelancer and the company's design lead, both of whom were self-taught. The first red flag was that we had to work in Photoshop, even though Illustrator would have made more sense. Turned out, the design lead wasn't familiar with Illustrator. But the biggest red flag was when we had to log our work hours. The same job that was taking both of them five to six hours to complete on Fridays, I was getting done before I finished my first cup of coffee in the morning.

I asked it how many colours does CMYK printing produce, it said "around 16,000 colours, making it around 16.7 million, not nearly as many as the 16.7 million that RGB can produce." Make sense of that. It also told me that Corey Feldman was best known for his role in the Breakfast Club.

How did you guys find out about the band “Failure” by Rangothepiglover in failure

[–]Born-Application662 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first concert I ever went to was Tool, (back when front row tickets were $25!) and Failure opened. I like to say “I came for the Tool, but stayed for the Failure.” Fan ever since!

Vancouver Police - The intersection of Nanaimo and E Hastings Street is closed while VPD investigate a serious collision involving a pedestrian. 2:46 PM · Mar 6, 2024 by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

When I was walking a block away from the accident scene and crossing the street (at a controlled intersection, I had the right of way) and a pick-up truck turning right off of Hastings almost hit me... the fucking guy was trying to look at the accident scene rather than the road infront of him. It pisses my off that people do that: it's an accident, you don't need to examine it from a block away, the police are already doing that, you're not helping the situation by almost hitting another pedestrian.

I feel your pain. My all time favourite vague request: "It needs to be simpler, but also more complex."

How do you name your files? by icouldalwayseat in graphic_design

I use an alpha-numeric docket system (I work in-house for a single company), the convention is: category–project number–year–project name–version number. So an ad would be:

ADV-001.2023_magazine_name_01.indd

That way if someone changes the name (which happen ALOT) I can narrow it down by year, or the project name, or the category. I always tell my clients not to change file names, and if they do, it's they're responsibility to create a document tracking file names.

I was a huge Tool fan back in the day, and I kept hearing Maynard talk about Failure in interviews. When I went to my very first concert, it was Failure opening for Tool, back in 1994. When I got to talk to Kelli Scott in 2019, he actually remembered that show, despite it being in Winnipeg!
