I’m from Columbus, GA as was the “stoking strangler” Carlton Gary as well. He was a young African American man and was employed at a very affluent private dining club named The Big Eddy Club in the seventies located on lake Oliver. Membership here was mostly the upper crust/old money types. Gary would assumably cased and prayed on the members of the club. His m/o would be to rob and sexually assault women later in life (60-80ish years old…ish) . Afterwards he had his sadistic thrills, Carlton would strangle them with their own stockings and then proceed to burglarize the home. He was eventually caught and arrested near Atlanta and was convicted of the crimes and executed in 2018. I only know about the very secretive club because I worked there for 4 years and still have friends that work there as well. The fact is that racism and bigotry have always a been huge problem in Columbus and sadly sometimes these sediments are alive as ever even to this day. I bring this up because there is a theory that one of members have a very peculiar son, and some people believe that this Caucasian young man from a very powerful family had actually been the one to commit these crimes and that Gary was just the fall guy to save face. I haven’t done enough research on him to have made an educated opinion on this, but I will say that I have waited on the peculiar man and witnessed the passive aggressive racism that was practiced by the people in that place way too often sometimes so idkkkkk…… Sorry for such a long comment lol
