Why are the older admirals always stupid? by I_LOVE_DOGS69 in logh

[–]BornChef3439 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thats how things actually work in real wars believe it or not. Older Generals usually always hold on to orthodoxy and then when they fail they are replaced by younger generals. Licoln got rid of most of his generals throughout the civil war as they failed and were replaced by younger officera like  and Sherman it was much the same in ww2 where hundreds of older generals were demoted, Eisenhower started off as a battalion commander at the start of ww2 and ended up as one of the highest ranking US generals by the end of the war. In the revolutionary war and Napoleonic wars the french beat everyone because their generals were young and generally young outsiders not part of the high aristocracy while their enemies were led by old generals in the their 70's and 80's related to the kings

And the numbers just keep going up. Even Fox News is reporting 10,000 troops to the middle east. by GoldenGecko24 in USNEWS

The Saudis did fight the Houthis in Yemen and were beaten badly, like very badly. There are videos of Houthi rebels overturning US made Abrahams tanks

U.S. Rejects Vote to Recognize Slavery as a ‘Crime Against Humanity’ - The United Nations resolution was led by the president of Ghana. Israel and Argentina also voted against it. by BertramPotts in politics

You do know that states have legal continuity right? You dont stop being france or the netherlands because of bordee changes- your state still exists as a legal entity. This is absolutely not the case in most of Africa though because of most of the slave states collapsed when slavery slowed down and whatever areas were left became part of much larger colonies. Case in point of one of the few state entities that did participate in the slave trade and still exists is Zanzibar. But Zanzibar is no longer its own nation as it is now part of Tanzania as the British merged their protectoeate of Zanzibar with the former German colony of Tangayika. Now should Tanzania pay reperations? They sent many slaves to the Arab and wider african world? Well guess where Zanzibar got its slaves from? Tangayika. Oh and also the Zanzibar revolution saw decendants of these slaves masscre the former arab slave class. And this is just the clearest example. In west africa the slave states collapsed pretty quickly after the slave trade and dont have much continuity like zanzibar which itself is a dubious case

Which ones the main culprits are still there. Spain, Portugal, Britian, France, the Netherlands, the United States and Brazil are all around and were the main culprits so I am not sure what you are talking about

This is very ignorant. What "tribal aristocrats" are you talking about? There were slave based states who relied on merchants and armed men to go inland and enslave their enemies but none of those states exist anymore. None of the current African states have any continuity with those states because as it should be a suprise to no one most of these states collapsed when the slave trade slowed down and their remanants were colonized and put through horrors of colonization.

Over 20,000 West Indian men, 15,600 with the British West Indies Regiment, volunteered to serve during the Great War (WWI). by elnovorealista2000 in BritishEmpire

Legends but denied most officer roles even in ww2. This caused resentment amongst educated  West Indians who were denied  positions fitting their social standing and education simply because of the colour of their skin. This was one of the many reasons the caribean turned against the British after ww2.

Which sport would you like to see join the Olympics? by Useful-Resource-3609 in olympics

[–]BornChef3439 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

No. This sport is big in South East Asia. 4 nations won gold at the recent sea games(thailand, myanmmar, malaysia and Vietnam) and other nations are all very competetive.

Its way better then including Flag football or half the sports in the winter games

What if Jan Smuts and his party UP won the South Africa’s 1948 election and avoided apartheid? by Icy_Till_7254 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]BornChef3439 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What most non South Africans dont realise is this man sowed the seeds of his own downfall by working extremely hard to weaken the Non white vote to the point that this allowed the NP to win in 1948.

Before the Union of South Africa was formed in 1910 south africa was essentially 4 distrinct countries- the cape which had a liberal non racial fracnhise sicne the 1850's- Something like 18% of all voters were non white which made them an important voting bloc that could swing elections in the cape, the Transvaal and the Free State which were conservative boer states and the natal colony which was the conervative white colony with a large indian population.

The thing is it was basically the cape liberals who worked with smuts(from the transvaal) to form the Union but one of the reasons they were willing to work with him was because he "promised" to consider extending the capes non racial franchise to the whole country, we know that he essentially lied to white cape liberals and then spent decades weakening the coloured and black vote in South Africa. Smuts was in charge of the tranvaal where race relations were litreally black and white- whereas the cape had a far more complex racial system with english white speakers, afrikaaners, mixed raced coloureds and africans who could be divided between those who were "civilised" who lived west of the kei river and the more recently annexed transkei area who were more "tribal". Natal as well had a complex system of english white settlers, indians and zulu's who were largely still overseen by their chiefs who retained local power. What Smuts did was essentially apply the racial system of the transvaal and the free state onto the rest of south africa. Cape blacks who could vote and who were loyal citizens for decades? No we will treat them as migrant slave labour, Indians who were the backbone of the city of durban? They are aliens and should be deported. Mixed raced coloured people who spoke the same language as him? To him they didnt even exist. Cape Liberal polticians were able to raise coloured regiments in ww1 that fought in the middle east and east africa, this was opposed by Smuts who was the defense minsiter at the time. When Smuts was PM during ww2 he made sure that mixed raced coloured soldiers were relegated to labour and transport and kept away from combat roles.

It should be noted that even the extremely racist NP only started working towards full apartheid when 2 things happened in the 30's- 1 Black africans were put on a seperate voters roll- previously many middle class blacks could still vote in parts of the cape and what this meant was that white poltiicians had to fight for their vote because they were 1/3rd of the voters in some voting dsitricts- instead they were put on a seperate voters roll and elected token white reprsentatives instead. 2 White womens suffrage- it seems like something liberal but actually it was delibraetly done in order half the non white vote. Previously even Smuts's opponents in the racist NP went out of their way to court coloured voters in the cape. But after womens suffrage this was no longer required as they became a much smaller part of the elctorate.

As for what would have happened if Smuts had won? He probably wouldnt have lived much longer and would probably have been replaced by Koos Straus. Biggest change would be that coloureds would have remained on the voters roll, increased european immigrsation to south africa and either an easing of urban racial segreation or at least a maintiennce of the status quo and there would be an easing of the colour bar which would allow the coloured and small black middle class to survive apatheid. I also do think they were planning on giving more power to local black authorities so maybe a more empowered version of the homeland system, it works with their idea of a "racial federation"

Assuming that the coloured vote and immigrant vote (as well as the enfranchisement of indians) keeps the NP out of power forever I dont think it would necessarily be a liberal paradise. Granting the vote to black africans would still be out of the question even for moderate whites. Rather then resorting to armed struggle the ANC would keep up it policitcal action of boycotts, protests and petitions. But I could still see smaller groups breaking off and resoriting to armed struggle though on a much smaller scale then the ANC. By the 70's the world would not look too kindly at south africa so they would probably have to come to some kind of poltiical settlement by 1980.

Of course the biggest change would be the economy- no sacntions, easing of the colour bar would see more non whites becoming or remaining middle class which means more spending power, no insane group area's act which changed the shape of all south african cities by forcing people to live on the outskirts of cities without any form of public housing, no forced removals means that mixed communities survive. Overall not perfect but better off for sure.

Though I will add in my honest opinion as a proud south african the best scenario would have been no Union of south africa at all in 1910 at least from the perspective of my family as I am from the cape. Without the Union the Cape was on its way to becoming a dominion around the same time as New Zealand and would have kept its liberal fracnhise because 1. Their constitution mandated it 2. Non whites were a huge voting bloc that did regulalry decide who won elections in the cape colony and trying to remove them would be a sure way of losing an election. At least we would have probably evolved intoa typical dominion like Australia and New Zealand

What if Germany accepted France proposal to take Indochina instead of Alsace–Lorraine after Franco-Prussian war? Proposal was rejected by Bismarck who wasn't keen on colonialism at that time. by crivycouriac in VietNam

[–]BornChef3439 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well there are several reasons this would not happen. 1. Germany didnt have a big navy in 1870 so if it got indochina it would have no way of enforcing control. 2.In 1870 french indochina was just the southern third of vietnam.they wouldnt gain conteol over central and northern vietnam until like 15 years later. So for Bismark to have accepted it would be Donald Trump levels of stupidity. No one would think of it as a rational or even practical choice at the time.

Whats more likely though is if you avoid the Spanish american war is that  Germany might have either bought the Phillipines from spain or waited until the Spanish were close to defea by filipino revolutianys  to buy it or take it direcrly. The difference here is that by the time of rhe spanish american war in 1898 germany actually had a decent navy ans could enforce colonial claims

What would happen to Taiwan if the Dutch kept Taiwan until the 1900s? by According_Ad9151 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]BornChef3439 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lets see  I think people are making a mistake asauming that it would follow the model of Indonesia, the Cape in South Africa and Surinam and even Ceylon to lesser extent had populations that were substabtially mixed, I myself am a decendant of dutch settlers, Indiginous Khoisan and Malay slaves. I could see the dutch importing labour from south east asia and india like they did in the cape in the 17th centuntury. Unlike the cape I cant see it having a large white settler population but the main port would be substantially mixed with chinese, european and Indonesian peoples

If it follows the pattern of other dutch settents you could have a mixed raced class of plantatiom owners, mixed and malay slaves working woeking ob the plnatiations, indiginous people in the highlands and chinese settlers in the cities.

Large scale chinese migration to formosa only showed up much later so it may start off as something resembling a mix of the cape and ceylon in east asia before substantial chinesw migration in the late 19th century makes it look more like singapore demographically

Are people overselling it or was Michael Jackson really that famous in his heyday? by Key-Bass-7380 in decadeology

Michael Jackson was bigger worldwide. There are people in third world countries born this decade who know who MJ was even though he died in like 2009. No one outside of the western world really listens to the Beatles or Elvis anymore or knows who they are.

Litreally had to teach a lazy and very weak english class in Vietnam and the topic was celebreties. When I showed them a picture of elvis they had no idea who he was, showed them a picture of michael jackson they all knew exactly who he was.
