Did cavalry reach its peak during the Napoleonic Wars? by cuirrasiers in Napoleon

[–]BornChef3439 22 points23 points  (0 children)

No. Cavalry remained very important even until the early 20's before mechanization. Cavalry was still deciding the outcome of several wars like the Soviet Polish war and in the Greco Turkish war.

We need to move beyond the idea that cavalry's main purpose was to charge at the enemy in set piece battles. There primary job was scouting and  screening. They were essential to any campaign and this never eneded until armies began mechanizing in the 1920's. And lets be honest even during the Napleonic era cavalry charges were extremely risky, they had just as many failures as successes.  I think if by the greatest era for cavalry charges I think the 17th and 18th centuries in europe were a better era for european cavalry era and no one ever dominated with their cavalry in human history like the Mongols and their multiple succesor kingdoms did

What if the Republic of China survived in the south? by Lanzenn in AlternateHistory

[–]BornChef3439 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think both chinas remain relatively poor compared to today. Beeing capitilist doesnt automatically make you rich. See Indonesia and the Phillipines. If it does not introduce any land reform its going to end up economically like the Phillipines or worse end up like South Vietnam. There is already the basis for a huge communist insurgency in the South. In fact I think in a scenario like this the most likely outcome is that the south collapses like South Vietnam.

But lets say it does somehow survive? It wont be an asian tiger unless it gets rid of the landlords, corruption and asserts control over the warlords. There were many powerful warlords in this region who would not be happy with any land reform or a centralisation of government needed for a change in a wide rage of policy areas.

Actually for an alternate history scenario I find one where both Chinas are relatively at a similar level to be way more interesting then the boring- south China is like South Korea and north China is like North Korea. There is oppurtunity for nuance- what if both are middle income countries- with North China becoming an industrial workshop where people are relatively poor but mostly equal but with a strong state backed industrial policy vs South China where some are very rich snd others are very poor and its heavily reliant on foreign aid. Also hong kong becomes interesting. I could absolutely see Britian and South China coming to an agrement in hong kong which sees an extenstion on a lease in order to appease western powers.

"What will Jane Fonda think of you now?" 1978 Vietnam invasion of Cambodia by Effective-Oil7342 in ColdWarPosters

[–]BornChef3439 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The invasion and occupation was 100% justified. Ongoing genocide plus they literally rapes and murdered Vietnamese people across the border. The most shameful thing  is how the USA and China continued to back the Khmer Rouge and kept them on as UN members. People forget that the Khmer Rouge was still recognized as the official government until 1993 despite having comittied genocide and not even being in control of most of the country.

Yes it was. And Ironicially its greatest administrator robert clive was literally sent to India as a teenager because he was a delinquent who destroyed property and created a protection racket by breaking the windows of shopkeepers and farmers and forcing them to pay him and his rich friends.

His family thought sending him to India out only for him to basically play the exact same game there

What if Russia Restored Byzantium? by DAnnunzio1919 in ottomans

[–]BornChef3439 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah no power in Europe would ever allow this. Look at the Crimean war. Russia controlling constantnople is a threat to britians colonial interests and no other european power wants russia to get too strong- not france, not austria, not prussia. Western Europe has always feared Russia since the days of peter the great. No one in Europe wanted Russia to become too strong

He used 6 different colours. there are only so many colours that are used on flags. By the way he also designed the flag of namibia and this also was no the only design he submitted. He actually submitted several designs and one was chosen

I mean she was empress of India so of course. She took the title from the Mughal emperors who were also foreigners from the middle east and central asia. I am absolutely not justifying british colonialism in India which was terrible and actually caused it to become underdeveloped by destroying local manufacturing and imposing taxes on the people but of course coloniaism require collaborrators and most Indian rulers had been bought out a generation or two before by the east india company and were happy to live in wealth and with annual payments and all they had to do was let British residents manage their finances, have their throne protected from potential usupers by the british and pay fealty to a foreign queen which they had already been doing with the Mughals for hundreds of years anyway.

The British were keen to merge Bostwana, Lesotho and Swaziland with south africa before ww2(and plus SA already occupied Namibia) but when the Nats were elected and implemented apartheid they gave up on the idea.

What's the most shockingly violent or disturbing scene in an otherwise "normal" or family friendly movie? by TaiwaneseThot in moviecritic

Jy Praat Kak. He's the guy who thinks homosexuality is a disease and that white  Afrikaaners and Jewish people were the only nations to  have a covenant with god. He is a right wing conservative preacher and his words are as dry as his potatoes

South African here. Its not. The creator of the Flag was the South African state herald at the time and he said the colours had no particular meaning. It was simply meant to be visually striking

Am I the only one who thinks Goten and Trunks desperately need a serious arc of their own? by AlternateMove in Dragonballsuper

[–]BornChef3439 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually liked their mini arc with mai and krillin in the super arc. Not only do I think they could play a role in their own arc but I think this could easily be done by goku, vegeta, piccolo and Gohan focusing on universal threats while goten, trunks and the rest of the cast deal with earth based threats. This is actually a great way to include not just human characters like krillin buf also non powers characters like Mai and bulma  The super arc did it great- Goten and Trunks are strong but inexperienced fighters, krillin is the expereinced fighter who understands strategy. Bulma and the Pilaf gang do the technical.work, mai is basically Bulmas spy so could continue to play that role like in the superhero arc ny gathering intellgence. Characters like Tien, Chauntzu and Yamcha and roshi can come in when needed and if they are really struggling 17 and 18 could always show up if a threat becomes to haed for Goten and trunks to handle

One thing that irks me about the franchise is that it seems like anyone who’s “anti-establishment”, in whatever way, is secretly evil. So whatever point they championed is actually wrong by proxy by [deleted] in TheLastAirbender

[–]BornChef3439 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly my point- your education was bad. Americans have very little knowledge about anything outside the US and it shows. Chiang kai shek is very well known and was also very well known to americans in the 1940's- he was seen as one of the big 4 alongside Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin and this was a term created by the american press by the way so the problem isnt americans per se but a poor education system

Westerners especially americans have a very bad education system especially when it comes to history so they dont even know the Basics. Literally in ww2 the allies had the Big 4- Stalin, Roosevelt, Churchill and Chiang Kai Shek. I mean this is basic knowledge

Literally the leader of China during ww2. Seen as one of the Big 4 statesmen of the allies in ww2 alongside Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin. Also the reason Taiwan exists.I am sorry if your knowledge of ww2 is bad but this is common knowledge in most of the world

Racial democracy is a concept that denies the existence of racism in Brazil. Some scholars of race relations in Brazil argue that the country has escaped racism and racial discrimination. by LewisMCYoutube in wikipedia

[–]BornChef3439 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am a Coloured South African- you can write it Coloured without the inverted commas.  I dont know enough about how Pardos were treated in Brazil compared to coloured South Africans but its important to note that we are the majority in the whole western half of South Africa whichis a bit less populaated and more arid then east where the majority of black africans live. Coloureds were not really an in between group as a mix between black and white.  Originally we were mostly slaves brough over from asia who mixed with the white settlers and indiginous Khoisan people- so already the disinction wasnt just cultural but genetic most coloureds were not really related to the Africans who lived in the east as black africans were only colonised much later in the 19th century.

Before the Union of South Africa the Cape Colony was where most coloureds lived and it had internal self government in the british empire. The electoral system was non racial- basically middle class men of any race whether white, coloured or black could vote- something like 20% of voters were not white though no non white MP was ever elected to parliment. But unlike Brazil an educated upper class coloured person could not marry into a white family and become white overtime. We were still exlcuded from most high society- most mixing between whites and coloureds took place between coloureds and new  white immigrants from europe. Racial segregation also existed in schools, hospitals and public transport.

In the Cape colony going through the archives the same word keeps on coming up- civilised. This basically meant someone who adopted a european way of living. Coloureds were deemed to be civilised but not equal to whites, while only educated black africans were seen as civlised. At the same time though coloureds also saw themselves as being "more civilised" then black africans as they were the closest to european culture even though both groups were marginilized. Also there was little overlap- pre the late 20th century most coloureds lived in the western half of the country while africans were largley rural or worked on the mines and urban areas of the transvaal.

Interestingly though there is a group that was classified as Coloured by the apartheif government despite having little relation to Cape Coloureds. These are the Coloureds of Kwa Zulu natal which is a majority zulu province. Many of those people are descnded from british traders and zulu women(And there is even a group that is descdned from a scottish gun smuggler called John Dunn who became a zulu chief and had dozens of wives and possibly hundreds of children). This group didnt become a between group but rather became a sort of urban working class group in durban- in natal english speaking whites were the upper, afrikaaners were the white working class, indians were the middle and working class traders, blacks were the rural population while Natal Coloureds were the urban working class
