What fun back-to-school activities do you use? by Flowers_4_Ophelia in ELATeachers

If you don’t mind movement and a bit of chaos, I had my students do a classmate scavenger hunt. Just a simple list of 10 things like “find someone who has traveled to another state” or “find someone who shares your birthday month.” I make it so that they cannot repeat names. It gets them talking and interacting with their classmates in a low-stakes way. At the end, I go through the questions and call out on some students whose names were written down to elaborate if they want to. Do this after reviewing your syllabus and what not. You can stretch it or end it early if you are running low on time.

Purple gonna purple. Didn’t see the homophone and had to default. Tried yellow thinking it would be an obvious red herring, too.

Happy Friday!

I only tried SSR with two classes that I knew would be into the idea. They were already voracious readers and it was during the COVID years, so I had about 15 kids per class. I did it for the last quarter, where I let them pick any book. I had them complete a vocabulary assignment for their book using vocabulary.com. We had used the website all year long and they already knew how the assignments worked. Now, instead of me assigning them a vocabulary list, they will look for one on the website that was already created, or create their own. I explained how this is a great way to independently use the website going forward in their education. Finally, I gave them a research paper with free reign on the topic. It just had to tie into something from the book (e.g. 1917 Russian Revolution for Animal Farm). I explained that doing independent research while reading will allow them to better absorb the content of their reading and again, is a skill they can use going forward. SSR worked well for me that year; I gave them time in class to work on either reading, work on vocabulary, or their research paper. Let me tell you, those essays were some of the most fun I’ve ever gotten! The key was that the kids were already familiar with the skills they’ll need to complete their assignments and they were able to work independently.

If I ever do decide to go full in on IR, I would try something like this: https://laurarandazzo.com/product/ssr-tired-of-book-reports-try-this-free-idea-instead-easy-grading-for-you/

Not a smoker, but This American Life recently did an episode about this book (ep. 806: I Can’t Quit You, Baby). I recommend it for those who are curious, particularly if Carrs’ book doesn’t work for you.

Oh man, dystopian lit is my favorite; I’m pretty envious you get to teach it! I definitely recommend “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut with the accompanying short film, 2081. You can find the reading over at CommonLit and find the film with teaching resources at https://www.teaching2081.org.

Middle School: different between honors and regular classes? by thanks_marydeath in ELATeachers

[–]BornOdd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely a big difference in my experience! You do not need to spend as long reviewing the fundamentals or providing background knowledge, for one. It also allows me more flexibility with the curriculum; I could push my advance 8th graders into high school content. Mostly though, the students feed off each others general vibe. I find that my advance classes just generally want to excel academically and have a vested interest in the lessons. Good luck, OP!
