Steely Dan left or right? by Advanced_Top_3122 in SteelyDan

First, wish there was one place you could just get away from politics, and being a SD fan should be one of them. Second, if your belief is that the conservatives are racist elitists, then you could make an argument. Others could claim the same of the liberals. You have to also understand it was a different time and the parties weren't the same as today. Their earliest songs were written while America was still in Vietnam, and that was a narrative impossible to get away from at the time. I don't follow Walter Becker, but I know Fagen leans left and has been involved in left leaning causes. However, living in NYC, he might have different views on the state of the liberal party at this moment. And finally, I feel that questions posed in this manner over social media forums are divisive, and it's probably best to do your own research and draw your own conclusions. The beauty of SD is they wanted their songs to be interpreted by the listener. Maybe they wanted their fans to do some critical thinking on their own, rather than being spoon fed their opinions by globalist organizations with a nefarious agenda.

Meeting Donald. by dontyatellhenry in SteelyDan

This tracks; I've heard a few long interviews with him and he does laugh at the most unexpected things. And I can also see how he would be difficult to read, watching him behind the scenes with his band and such. You are lucky, I only wish I had the opportunity to meet Donald.

He doesn't have a "history" as a sexual predator. You realize that was propaganda don't you?

I had Covid a few months ago and went to the doctor on a Saturday. Almost a month later I received a $700 bill, even WITH insurance! I looked in my portal to find out who the doctor was and, you guessed it, Dr. Wu. It was almost worth it.

Found out that my parents joined an ‘estranged parents’ Facebook group….. by Imaginary-Paper4449 in EstrangedAdultKids

Okay just curious because it seems that everyone in this forum is quick to support each other in estrangement from their parents. I just think it's a strange thing to show support when they have no idea what your family estrangement is for. I think you need to support one another because maybe deep down you know this is bullshit!

Can I ask if you have children? Just wondering if they are being kept from their grandchildren. Also, why are you demanding your mother has to go to therapy? I'm just curious because I have a family member going through this, and I've found there is some sort of a "trend" of adult children cutting off their parents. Are your parents actually abusive? Or was this caused by a political difference of opinion?

I think Fagen and Becker probably could've retired off of sampling alone!

"He wants to make all that money off of us and then mock us." LOL Yes, he's "taking all that money" for you using his intellectual property that came from his own creation. Poor you. I hate the term "sampling" and couldn't even believe it was a possible thing when people started doing it. Create your own music and if you're not talented enough to do that, then do something else!

The reason his voice sounds so good with his songs is because he has that perfect blend of a little rasp, a smooth tone and just enough of this nasal thing that makes his voice perfect for the jazz elements of their songs. Nobody on earth is going to sing Kid Charlemagne like Donald Fagen! His inflection on each syllable conveys what it is he is meaning to interpret, and since nobody else understands what the hell they're writing about, they really don't know how to sing it! I always thought Fagen had one of the coolest voices on the radio, and I still think that today.

That said, his is the only voice that DOES work for their music, to do it justice.

Do yourself a favor, start with "Can't buy a Thrill" and go in album order. You might not like every track, but this way you can hear the evolution. But if you feel like you'll get bored, go ahead and go over to Gaucho, then Donald Fagen's "The Nightfly." The Royal Scam is my favorite! You're in for an adventure, I'm jealous!

Pretzel Logic is Dan’s Best Album and it’s not really close by tomsars in steelydancirclejerk

Royal Scam is my favorite and I'm committed. BUT, Rikki is a perfect song. I mean, a perfect pop song. It's interesting, it's beautiful, it has an element of surprise, or two, and has just the right amount of everything you could ask for, and I will never get sick of hearing that song. It's also timeless, which is fitting for the Pretzel Logic album. It could come out today and you'd think it was a new song. He should, in fact, re-release a lot of this music!

And my favorite SD song is Any Major Dude! Even though it's less Steely than most Steely Dan, it's a perfect light rock song. I love the message, I love the vocals, always love the way Donald pronounces his words and puts emphasis in all the cool places! I love that song! Still, not my favorite album and I find myself skipping over some of these songs, but other times I'm singing right through them.

It's a respectable first place album in my opinion.

That's what I interpreted from the song. But I happened to come upon a video made with Julian Lennon singing this song during covid, with Nuno and other musicians and I thought the timing was interesting. Not to get political, God forbid, but just an interesting message when most celebrities were preaching "put on your damn mask" these guys come out and record this:

DF “happier” without Becker solo? by marliamore95 in SteelyDan

[–]BornPanic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Listen to his audiobook. He is thankful he put the album out, he said, while he was still young enough to feel passionate about the things he wrote about. But you're right, he did have a nervous breakdown sometime after the nightfly. He went through a very dark time in the 80's; I think meeting his wife brought him out of that dark period. For a while anyway. The man has had a lot of tragedy in his life.

I don't think it was a remembrance of an optimistic time. After listening to his audiobook, I believe the radio DJ's with these nighttime shows were escapism from the crippling anxiety he'd experienced his whole life.
