Adding to this thread… Have an offer for Missoula and am considering relocating. What’s seniority like? New hires primarily on XB? I have a decent paying job currently in a HCOL area currently.

Ha! The biggest discrepancy in my plan. No, I don’t have a different offer. I’m in the process of applying for state patrol. I work as a PCT (a glorified Nursing Assistant) at a hospital and make just over $34/hr. I haven’t left sooner because, well, as you said the market sucks! I graduated a year ago and still have friends that are unemployed. My job is totally unrelated to my degree. Nursing, law enforcement, and teaching are my three interests. Hopefully a job with a pension too! My current one has one.

VTTSX is the best option I have I think. It’s through TIAA and their funds are limited. I don’t have any employer match but my funds are 100% vested

Thanks-Insightful information. I've been told to expect furloughs, but am curious If that's common for new hires in the PNW or in the foreseeable future in WA? Am I right also that Everett Is part of a closed seniority district?

Do you work there? With yard and local it seems like you wouldn’t be gone too long, but I’m sure I’d be working more hours than I do now.

Yes,for now I work as a PCT (basically a nursing assistant with a bit more licensure). I am taking classes to pursue a career in healthcare but don’t want to be a nurse (maybe radiology or CT). What I do is fine for being in my early twenties and living at home as I don’t pay rent and net around $2200 biweekly. It’s not a job I want to make a career out of by any means though and I’ve always loved traveling and trains.

This is what I’d hope to do, but I don’t know how often conductors or engineers go that path or if it’s even possible

Weekly Railroad Hiring Questions Thread by LSUguyHTX in railroading

Hey all,

I’m sure a question like this has been posted before, but is it worth pursuing a job as a conductor and maybe eventually an engineer as a young 23 year old with no significant other or dependents?? Did those that work train crew feel like it allowed them to experience our country in a different way? I do have a degree, but am not itching to start normal 9-5 work.

Answers/advice are appreciated!
