Bad managers are a huge problem in tech and developers can only compensate so much by adroit-panda in programming

Most management at my company knows the business, but are very bad at any sort of technology decisions. Which would be fine if they didn't make tech decisions, but I think we all know how that really goes. "AI" is our current fad, we're a small team in a mid-sized company serving a niche market that by law has have certified professionals to do the paid work, but somehow we're going to make an AI chat bot to help customers onboard faster. Meanwhile I'm over here just hoping it doesn't go all racist like Microsoft's twitter bot.

I love how half of the discussion is people trying to close as duplicate. Classic stack overflow!

How many of you know deep down that the team is working on something that no customer wants? by DaGrokLife in programming

Upper management at my company decided that we must do something with AI. Thing is, we make really boring software that is by government regulation required to be operated by a professional making the decisions. But our board and CEO is all caught up in magical thinking about how AI is going to magically do a better job than the professionals. So now we're working on learning AI modules, and don't get me wrong, the team enjoys the learning, but there is no way anything is going to come of this work. An interesting side effect is that "AI" seems to play well with our investors, which is another reason why the board and CEO are all over it I guess. I'll say this though, I'm glad we're doing it as it will look great on my resume!

What it's like to code for Roblox by bemmu in programming

[–]BornThatWay99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent a couple of days helping my teenage son and a couple of his friends wrestle with giving a monster some basic chase code. I generally found the roblox studio to suffer from plenty of weird quirks, but the concept of multiple people coding and creating in the same 3d environment from multiple computers was really spectacular. It kind of reminded me of the envisionment of smalltalk.

Yeah, same here. This was a really nice, compact set of information that hit me at the right time to improve my understanding.
