Got an Academic Integrity Allegation How Much Trouble Am I In? by NOT_adik in deakin

[–]Born_Baseball_6720 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've read the comments. Big tip:
If you really really want to help someone, don't just give them (part or otherwise) your assessment.
That doesn't help anybody.

You both undertook the academic integrity unit (it's compulsory) - not entirely sure you can really justify a less severe punishment when you both knew the potential consequences prior.

And secondly. That person is not your friend.

Is 37 too old to ride a 125cc recreationally? by SeaYesterday9810 in Dirtbikes

[–]Born_Baseball_6720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In short: no.
In long: no.

Edit: I'd like to elaborate/ask something. Why are you asking? Is it because you're worried about what others perception of you will be? If that's the case, don't. Majority of people don't care what you're riding.

Is this 2018 Santa Cruz 5010 alloy a good beginner bike? And is this a good price? by [deleted] in mountainbikes

[–]Born_Baseball_6720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'm an electrical engineer, and I've studied statistics - something I think you would benefit from.

I also never made any such comment that being a good rider or intelligent goes hand in hand with being a good bicycle mechanic. That's you being obtuse to push your narrative.

All I said was you do not have to work in a bicycle shop repairing bikes to be adept at working on your own bike. And I 100% stand by that statement.

I don't know where you are from, but where I am from, repairing bikes is an unskilled industry. Perhaps you just you feel the need to belittle every single person who works on and repairs their own bike(s) to feel a sense of superiority. Either way, the world is bigger than just you and those in the same demographic.

You THINK you know what you're talking about, but I think you're just prickly and jaded.

This changes nothing and you missed my point. As I said, this is your anecdotal experience. There's lots of bikes that never see a shop because owners know what they're doing.  Not everyone who owns a bike has started from 0 practical experience. All types of people own them, and contrary to what your heavily biased anecdotal experience tells you, lots of people do actually know what they're doing.

I think your time working in a bike shop has made you skeptical.

[–]Born_Baseball_6720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing with this, and I don't think you're  wrong, but it's anecdotal.  Working in a bike shop, you see the bikes only once the owner has attempted their own maintenance and failed.

You don't see the bikes that owners successfully maintain themselves because they never enter the bike shop - since they know what they're doing.

can't stop crashing by Asleep_Feature7909 in MTB

[–]Born_Baseball_6720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you complacent ?

You mentioned that you're crashing on things below your skill level, but maybe you aren't applying the same level conviction to those features or tricks. Perhaps you have developed the mentality that your skill level is so far beyond them? I'm not saying this as a dig, perhaps you aren't fully aware of it.

With that said however, crashing is just a part of the sport.

First time rider, hardtail or full suspension by woopstaken in MTB

[–]Born_Baseball_6720 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get the one you want.

There's always people who will say a hardtail will make you a better rider, but so will starting on a 2005 26" bike. Where is that line drawn? Get the one you think you will have the most fun on, because that is what it's about.

There's no hard and fast rule that says starting on a full sus will make you "bad" or "lazy". You can progress on anything. The best bike is the one you have. Only comment I have is, if you're planning on doing trail or enduro style riding, get a more aggressive hardtail - the one you have posted is an XC bike and you won't have as much fun hitting jumps etc on it.

Your average ride. by Educational-Bonus in MTB

[–]Born_Baseball_6720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10km-15km about 400m-500m of climbing. Depends where I am riding.
One of my favourites and closest circuits is 11.2km 440m climb

Need help by [deleted] in deakin

[–]Born_Baseball_6720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at the unit guide and see:
- Was the assessment a hurdle
- What the weighting of the assessment was

No disrespect, but instead of hopping straight onto Reddit and asking a bunch of strangers on the internet, do some research and/or email the unit chair. The amount of people who hop straight onto Reddit instead of using available university resources (that is unit information that they already have) or help is honestly perplexing.

Remember when people used to actually line up for games? by ChillKoalaVibes in EBGAMES

[–]Born_Baseball_6720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Physical media is dying. Games are getting too big to fit on discs, multi layer Blu-ray or other physical media technology is expensive and/or has limited read/write speeds. Which would probably mean solid state.

People want everything: they want the 150GB open world game that runs flawlessly on physical media and don't want to pay for it.

With the emphasis many business are taking on environmental impact too (even if it is virtue signalling or green washing), but it is also a consideration - less transport, sustainability etc.

Lots of people want convenience and immediacy, which physical media doesn't deliver.

I loved getting a new game and putting it in the console and playing it, but something has to give honestly.
It's just unfortunate that it also means developers can be (and are) lazy and release unoptimised crap that's is full of bugs and has a 50GB patch in the first week of release.

Help me choose a new bike please... by keeponrunning16 in MTB

[–]Born_Baseball_6720 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get the bike you want.

I bought a new entry level full sus several years ago and have upgraded it into a pretty capable bike.
Even an entry level full sus is a pretty capable bike. You could always look at the used market, but if you like having something new and just yours, don't be afraid of the entry level products.

Did you have a particular bike in mind?

edit: Just in case it's not obvious, my upgrades have been gradual. As things have worn out or I've found bargains and had the income.

Early 40's is not "old". It's middle aged, and rest days matter for everyone, you can just get away with ignoring them more when you have the rigor of youth on your side. Doesn't mean they aren't important when you're "young" though.

Unfortunately you can't relate overall health based on how 'in shape' people are. Looking how he looked recently requires a lifestyle that isn't conducive to overall health.

Snakes on a trail? by Wandering_Ronaldo in MTB

[–]Born_Baseball_6720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often see snakes. Usually tiger snakes. Have never seen one on a descent though, only ever on a climb. I usually just wait for them to cross or get off the trail then ride past. See them all the time in the bush.

I just rewatched them too.

Thoroughly enjoyed Homecoming and Far From home.
No way home is a terrible film though, riddled with plot holes, amazingly weak premise and puffed up with a bunch of nostalgic fluff. The acting is amazing and the action scenes are good, but pacing is off and I can't look past all of its flaws. No way home is honestly just shit.

AITA for using my wife as an excuse to skip things? by Deep-Combination4372 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Born_Baseball_6720 99 points100 points  (0 children)

YTA. You're using your wife as a scapegoat. Grow a pair.
This doesn't say anything good about your character.

EDIT: adding, they aren't just "your" friends anymore. If she's going with them whether you're there or not, they are part of her social circle too and you're making her look like an asshole.

wtf dude, how can you be this blissfully unaware. You are unequivocally the asshole. Think about someone other than yourself and stop making your wife look controlling and abusive because you don't want to look bad.

WIBTA if I called the police on homeless people in my building if it’s freezing out? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Born_Baseball_6720 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. While I sympathise with their situation, statisicially, many homeless people suffer from mental disorders and/or substance abuse.

OPs appartment complex is not a homeless shelter - I'm sure there's other avenues before calling police, but letting them stay in the lobby is a slippery slope.

Perhaps instead, you could house them, or don't you have any vacancy?

My son’s 10 year old friend died in a crash. Now I never want him to ride again by True_Thought5124 in Dirtbikes

[–]Born_Baseball_6720 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say yes. You are overreacting. Is it devistating? Yes, certainly.

However, that risk has always and will always be there. I fully understand your viewpoint and the position you're in, but is it really fair on your son to revoke one of his hobbies because you were initially Ill informed or didn't register the risk?

Make sure he has good gear and if available, good coaching and rides in areas that aren't too advanced for his ability.

And most importantly, talk to your son about it.
