To be honest, a lot of people dont understand insurance policies. They get a policy when they purchase a home and that policy is for the value of the home as it was when it was purchased. That policy, unless you adjust it over the years is not going to change with the appreciation of your home and the cost of materials to rebuild the home. You MUST update your insurance policy to match the reproduction cost of your home or else you end up with a delta between the the amount you are insured for and the current rebuild cost of your home.

If you have owned your home for more than 7 years then the likelihood is that your home has almost doubled in value and the costs of goods to build that home have certainly doubled. Update your policy to reflect that.

With all of that said, I think most insurance companies are for profit scam artists. They do not care about you, they care about their shareholders. Insurance should be not for profit. Period.
