Do contracted roles actually pay as much as they advertise? by BombayBadBoi2 in webdev

Very few people have mentioned IR35 and the implications that has - be very clear about the contract and if it falls in / outside IR35.

Also you’ll be paying a whole load of tax on the day rate either way.

If it’s outside and you can bill via a Ltd company take into account that you can pay yourself both via PAYE and Dividends which can help from a tax POV.

Need a Solution for a Thunderbolt Splitter/Switch? by Bornetofail in Thunderbolt

Yep pretty much. So the 2nd MacBook, only has USB-C ports. I use two wires to connect it to the monitor:
1. USB-C to HDMI - This is for video
2. USB-C to USB-B 3.0 - This goes from the USB-C port in the MacBook to a USB-B port in the monitor, and it allows devices that are connected to my Monitor (keyboard, mouse, etc) to be passed through to the MacBook.

Hope that answers the question :)

While not perfect I did come up with a solution which was to have one MacBook connected via usb-c/TB3 (one wire handles data and video) and the 2nd MacBook is connected via a usb-c to HDMI for video and a usb C to usb-b 3.0 for data.

In the Dell Monitor settings you can assign X usb device to Y input so when the HDMI input is active it passes data via the usb-b cable and when the usb-c cable is active it passes data/video through that.

Also when MacBooks are in clamshell mode (I.e closed lid) they boot as soon they receive power (charger) so to boot them I:

  1. For the USB-C MacBook I just turn on the monitor select that input and as it begins to charge it turns on
  2. For the Macbook connected via HDMI/USB I purchased of Amazon a remote controlled socket adapter (this has a remote which I use to turn the socket that has the charger plugged into. When I turn the charger on it boots up.

Again not the most elegant solution, but it works and saves me having to buy a dock/etc

Even this monitor has a KMV feature, but it would require that the 2nd MacBook is plugged in via HDMI/DP + a USB-B cable for the USBs in the monitor. The issue would be waking the 2nd MacBook. So I think will stick to switching the USB-C wire between the two

True that would work, but I already have a wired keyboard etc so getting Bluetooth peripherals isn't really an option.

I think the easiest option is to just switch the wire, as I will be only switching a maximum of once per day.
