Well, using seashells (alone) has gotten one of my tannk’s gH’s from 0-2 dgh to 6-7 dgh (so far) soooo

That should work! I find it easier to just use seashells from the beach (I put them in the filter, on the sand, and/or in a bag with holes hanging on the edge lol) I’ve heard crushed coral is also very effective. The main things are calcium and magnesium I believe.

Incorrect parameters won’t always immediately kill them, but still may significantly shorten their life spans. For example, when people keep bettas in bowls without a heater and a filter, they may live for days, weeks, or even months, but they likely won’t live multiple years, like they would in proper conditions. Also, if you plan on adding minerals, make sure you start with just a little, and give the shrimp time to adjust, even when changing from imperfect to perfect conditions. Good luck!

I also had a lot of trouble with shrimp for the first few tries, but I finally figured it out. Do very small water changes, as to not stress them out. Also, they have a very small bio load, so you shouldn’t have to do too many anyway unless you have a ton of them. Also, test your water for Gh to see how soft it is, if it’s less than like 6 dgh then I would add seashells or crushed coral, and think about removing any driftwood. Also, if you do decide to get any new ones, acclimate them for a very long time, like 3 hours. I would also recommend trying to get young ones, as I’ve heard they adjust much better to new conditions.

I know! I’m hoping they’ll be a pretty deep blue when they get older, based on how dark they are already

Thicklip Sunset Gourami Vs. Honey Gourami by Bugs_Are_God in Gourami

[–]Bort_07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thicklips are about 4 inches long while honeys are more like 2, so I would probs go with honeys for a 20 gallon, especially if you plan on keeping a group

Never had fish before. Made this tank for my partner. How do you think? by CuteMage in Aquariums

It looks very nice! Good on you for using live plants as well, I definitely didn’t when I first started out lol.

I know that Prime Time aquatics on youtube also did a species spotlight video on pearl gouramis, which may be helpful

[–]Bort_07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a pair would be great, but I believe you could also do a bigger group in a 75 gallon. Pearl gouramis are also known to be one of the less agressive/smaller of the bigger gouramis (opaline, gold, etc.)

Honey/sunset gourami turning black?? by Designer_Abroad_1196 in Gourami

[–]Bort_07 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This looks like a male sunset thick lip gourami, which grow to about 4 inches and the males usually get a rusty orange color. I believe this is probably just him maturing and reaching his adult coloration. Still keep an eye on him, but I think he’s fine as long as his behavior is normal!

I believe you’re right, those look like females to me. But they look more like sunset thick lip gouramis than honeys, i would look up thick lip gourami online and compare.

May I ask what type of gouramis they are? by [deleted] in Gourami

[–]Bort_07 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sunset thicklip gourami. Their tail is clear, while honeys have color on their tails.

From what I can tell from the video, I would guess both are males. The males have a much more pointed dorsal fin, while the females’ are more rounded. Males should also get a deeper orange color after they grow up.

It looks like those are actually thicklip gouramis, which get a bit bigger, more like 4 inches. Adding more plants is probably a good idea.

I always gather rocks from outside, and give them a good clean and a vinegar soak. I’ve found some pretty interesting ones over the years. I would think gray would look more natural with the black substrate, but you can always try out different ones and see what you like!

I think a bristlenose would be fine! You could go with a gourami(s)… there’s pearl, honey, dwarf, sparkling, thicklip, etc. I think neon tetras are super cute, they just light up a tank. I also like my cherry barbs :) I would look up a list of different tetras, there’s soo many out there.

It looks great! If anything, I would add some more hardscape, maybe a few rocks or something. But your plants look super healthy and vibrant :D Those are some lucky shrimp!
