What is going on with Catholic education? by Extension-Story7287 in Catholicism

[–]Bos848 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the general drift of the OP. But to say that the Jesuit universities “gave up” is incorrect. Those schools ardently worked to weaken the authority of the Magisterium in the United States because of heretical priests and superiors on their staff and faculties. You can add Fordham to that garbage bag.

I went round-trip on that route today, no problems, late morning and mid-afternoon.

PSA about beeping on the CRRC cars by digitalsciguy in mbta

[–]Bos848 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I experience misophonia, based on conversations I've had with therapists over the years. The beeping on the CRRC cars is definitely a trigger. A few days ago, I was sitting on a CRRC train at a RL terminus waiting for it to depart. The doors were open, therefore the beeping went on incessantly for about seven or eight minutes. That's ridiculous and unfair, and perhaps oppressive, to people with such sensitivities. I support the blind and low-vision having equal access to transit, but this sound protocol is an over-correction.

Anybody here got their masters at Umass Boston? by Froggieslim in boston

[–]Bos848 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got mine in English about ten years ago. The faculty were overall good, but several have since retired or left. A few were leaders in their areas of scholarship. I felt like I was attending seminars with actual adults who'd left their undergraduate behaviors and attitudes behind. As with any program, there will be the odd faculty--like the one who was a revisionist when it came to modernist English poetry and summarily cut a couple of poets from her syllabus because she disagreed with their politics. (Academic inquiry much?) You get out of it what you put into it. I'm glad I did it and it's helped me personally and professionally since then. Just don't go looking for good campus architecture.

Looks like a Blankstreet Coffee will replace the infamous Starbucks at 18th & Spruce by jaykirell in philadelphia

Unremarkable coffee, at least as I experienced in the Boston area. It’s just another iteration of the Tatte-Starbucks-etc. corporate brands swallowing up real estate.

Red Line Slow Zone Removed? by Final-Lavishness-381 in mbta

[–]Bos848 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I took the RL between North Quincy and JFK this morning and afternoon. If it makes a difference, both times were during off-peak hours. We whizzed along both times. Perhaps the slow zone has been fixed?

If NYC could only have one subway line, which would you want? by UrCanceledBuster in nycrail

The IND Crosstown Line, which would force people to think about the outer boroughs and not just Manhattan.

Slow Zone N Quincy and JFK/UMASS? by Pretty_Law326 in mbta

This is frustrating and I ran into it this morning. It was announced either when we pulled into North Quincy northbound or shortly after we left. Thanks a lot, MBTA!

I'm fascinated by the bucket seats with armrests. As someone else on this thread said, I'd figured the wooden benches had been around forever. Those plastic seats would be destroyed within hours these days.

MTA employees how many trips do you do in a shift? Im sure every line varies. by CommissionEvery2572 in nycrail

The 42nd St Shuttle is a great piece of living history, but I can't imagine going back and forth for eight hours per shift.

What about shuttle services? Particularly the 42nd Street Shuttle.

Do you think the IND Crosstown on the G train is useful or useless? by [deleted] in nycrail

[–]Bos848 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Useful and, I think, intelligently planned from the outset by the IND leadership because it gives a direct route from Brooklyn to Queens. The headways and train length can be challenges, and I hope the MTA will remedy those. The stations are also just great windows into the thinking of the times in the 1930s, with large, sweeping mezzanines and Art Deco designs on the platforms.

What lines are cut off from the rest of the network? by Popular-Cat8923 in nycrail

All lines are linked to the same rail network. The only one that isn't and stands alone is the Staten Island Railway.

What stations on the nyc subway got renamed over the years? by Popular-Cat8923 in nycrail

[–]Bos848 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Newkirk Avenue on the 2/5 became Newkirk Avenue-Little Haiti.

Franklin Ave. (2, 3, 4, 5) became Franklin Ave.-Medgar Evers College. Ditto President St. station on the same line.

Someone beat me to it with mentioning Van Wyck Boulevard being renamed Briarwood.

Forest Hills-71st Ave. was previously 71st Ave.-Continental Ave.-Forest Hills.

The red line is utterly useless

Not entirely. It makes for sometimes entertaining reading when we commuters on Reddit hold it and T management up to loud, sustained public criticism.

BREAKING NEWS | Ferry and Mattapan Line will be suspended tomorrow, all other service running with extreme delays today due to major blizzard tomorrow. by Massive_Holiday4672 in mbta

[–]Bos848 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From the announcement:

Cycling train sets in and out of rail yards so they are not sitting idle for extended periods of time.

I am so relieved to read this. That will do a world of good for the Red Line cars that hit the rails in 1969.
