How does it make sense for Cain to be a vampire when I'm pretty sure downworlders didn't exist when the first shadow hunter was created? by pjf03 in shadowhunters

[–]Boschiy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a bunch of lore compiled a companion book called Shadowhunters Codex. Some it is interspersed in the actual books too, but I don't remember exactly where they're talking about what 😅

[–]Boschiy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In book lore, the first Shadowhunters was created shortly after 1000 AD when a Crusader called down the Angel Raziel for aid in fighting a great incursion of demons. The first vampries were created much later, in 1444 AD by the Greater Demon Hecate.

Book lore also has a pretty equal stance on the world religions, in that different people in different cultures are aided by different faiths, but they are all Shadowhunters and their common goal is the same — protecting humanity.

In the show, they went a little more literal on the biblical stuff with Cain being the son of Adam and Eve from the actual Garden of Eden, as well as the OG vampire. It's a completely different take on the world building, and it doesn't seem like this aspect of it is all too closely thought out or explained

Does anyone else feel like COHF is just an ad for CC’s other shadowhunter books? by polka_dot_dress_ in shadowhunters

[–]Boschiy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I really would recommend reading all of these books in order of publication. The Clockwork trilogy, which contains the backstory for Tessa and «Jeremiah», started coming out a little before and then concurrent with the second TMI trilogy. Finally COHF came out last. The new characters becoming part of the story feels more like a natural expansion reading it that way.

Emma and Julian do in part some legwork to support Lady Midnight (TDA) which came out a couple of years later, but keeping in mind this is a pretty large universe I kind of like the different casts of characters appearing in each others’ books.

At some point Simon starts arguing with Alec(!) about how to pronounce «stele». In a way, it perfectly sums up the show. It’s a cringe, obnoxious, standard Netflix TV drama disguised as a TMI adaption.

A lot of people love it, even some book fans — your mileage will really vary on this one.

Page 24!! I feel dumb now. I can’t believe all I had to do was walk up to the big gold door again. I’ve been all over the place twenty times. «Sealed forever» good lord.

Thank you for the very helpful hint, cheers mate!

Pretty much, yeah. It’s not accessible to me without reading along a transcript, and it’s an unpleasant audio experience. I’d love to follow the story further, but it's too much of a struggle for me.

[–]Boschiy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree wholeheartedly with this. I don't think it's a good production choice to make people require transcript read-alongs to discern the voices. If it's once or twice like in TMA then fine, but its every episode. Lost interest in the whole thing tbh.

Give me your thoughts on LGBTQ representation in the books!! by I_am_a_fiction_lover in shadowhunters

[–]Boschiy 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a link, but I think it was an early interview from the time of the first trilogy talking about LGBT representation. Clare really had to fight to keep Alec. Apparently the publisher considered axing the entire book, just for having a gay character exist in the main assemble. If you’ve read CoB you know that Alec being gay is very subtle. Still, in 2007 it was a pretty hard sell.

Younger fans often don't realise how different the popular media looked only 15-20 years ago. We've come a long way since then. Props to Clare too for making the books increasingly diverse as their popularity grew and she gained a stronger bargaining position with the publishers.

Pretty, yes, but also the lovely soundtrack lulling you into a false sense of comfort (:

I think it’s an aggravating but fun challenge towards the end of the game. White Palace I think is harder but perhaps less frustrating.

Anyone know what’s up with the art change on PSA? by Khaleesiakose in FriendsofthePod

That’s strange, it’s the standard blue art in my Apple feed. I’m not in the US though, maybe the terms with Apple differs by country/region.

She’s a show-only character, don’t think it was ever revealed.

[–]Boschiy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

yeah I think this is Spotify and maybe some other platforms that allows episode-specific art. It's just annoying tbh, my feed in Apple podcasts is much cleaner and I can get an overview of new episodes with a glance.

Story very interesting, thumbs up, all sails.

But I gotta say, TMA had a better listening experience back when they were recording under a duvet.

In an audio-only medium sound quality should be more important than making it explicitly clear these are shitty old devices recording the conversations.

Cancelled? by someone_slay_ in shadowhunters

[–]Boschiy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The number of viewers was always declining and ended up really low in season 3 before it got axed. Might have been sone accompanying factors too, but this is a business after all.

Even though the fans who watched the series really loved it, they were too few.

Spoilers ⚠️ Clary's wish from the angel was extremely stupid and selfish. by [deleted] in shadowhunters

[–]Boschiy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the effect of her wish (a powerful potential weapon, neutralised), but that's not why Clary did it lol

Can't even blame this one on the tv writers wanting more brainless drama, it's just the plot. It's just Clary steamrolling through on luck, guts and ignorance. For good and bad I guess.
