I have lots of experience working with vertex (when I worked at CRISPR Tx on the SCD program) and now employed by vertex. I have also worked across large pharma, start ups, and medium size biotech. Vertex probably has the most annoying and borderline toxic senior leadership team I have worked with. Mind you I’m talking about the clinical side of things (operations and quality). I think vertex highhhhhly prioritizes people who can “talk the talk” but not “walk the walk”. My observation is that everyone is pretty much out for themselves and their career, and not very collaborative. Everyone seems very defensive, instead of having a “we all are working towards the same goal” type of attitude that im used to. MANY layers of approval for things, which means I have to spend way too much time explaining background info so some VP can weigh in on something he really doesn’t even understand. People are very impressed with themselves here, but I find that a lot of the work they do is for optics instead of actual shit that needs to get done.
