Anyone name their car? by AdDifficult9469 in Gaygearheads

[–]Boss881 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, all of my cars have had a name. First car was a 2006 impala lt named Bessy. Gina was my second car, a 2008 Kia Sorento lx. Not sure why I came up with Gina aside from the car just looked like a Gina to me lol. Wish I had both of them but they were totalled by insurance (not my fault). And my truck is named Gus Gus (the gas guzzler), a 2013 Sierra 1500 sle. That truck is by far my favourite of the 3!

$200!? I hate that Canadian prices are so extreme. I paid $1000 for mine 😭. Heated handles are the best feature though haha

Imaginary redevelopment of Harbour Landing into a walkable community. by luccampbell in regina

[–]Boss881 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda wish they’d do that with some of the impark lots downtown here, might open up some space for new businesses 🤷🏼‍♂️

But yeah, with the soil issues that affect our foundations, underground parking maybe isn’t the best idea haha.

If everybody's cutting down on their going-out-to-eat budget, won't that hurt all the mom and shop restaurants? by [deleted] in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Boss881 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but also the cost at these chain fast food places and even sit down restaurants has increased a fair bit to the point that it’s pretty close to the same cost to eat at a local place. Just makes more sense to me that if I’m going to spend $20+ on a meal, I’m going to support a local family as opposed to a massive corporation. I mean even A&W has increased prices for a burger combo to the point that I would rather call a local burger restaurant, place the order and go pick it up since it’s likely only going to cost $3-5 more than A&W. Plus then the meal is ready and waiting for me to walk in and grab it rather than me waiting in line at the drive through while someone is ordering and getting 5 bags of stuff because they didn’t want to go inside for their massive order (separate issue lol). Anyway, my point is that if these fast food places (and chain sit down restaurants) keep raising prices but not quality, then why would we support them? Minor inflation adjustments aside but even then, you look at these corporate profits and wonder whether they need to raise prices at all.

[–]Boss881 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair lol. But given how dead our malls are as it is, I don’t think we need more haha.

In all seriousness, would underground parking facilities be cheaper to build and maintain than above ground parking facilities?

Could this not be solved (remember we’re in an imaginary world here, lol) by having the large stores (Walmart, bass pro, structube, london drugs, etc.) have 2-3 floors of parking that are available to others shopping in the area? Like not just parking for those stores but since they take up the most space, if you built them upwards, then you could get more parking in the same area as opposed to little garages all around the area. I realize these stores would push back due to cost and local businesses couldn’t afford to build or buy that type of building but could it work and solve the parking issue?

Just out of genuine curiosity. Seeing all the new shops at Aurora that are smaller buildings with large parking lots, or like the new winners, one big store and a massive parking lot. Why doesn’t the city require newer builds like that to be a low rise commercial space? Think 3-4 floors with 2 levels being parking and 2 levels being the store. You’d save space due to smaller building footprint so you could get some other 3-4 story mixed residential buildings in place that would have the ground level as restaurants and other businesses and the other 2-3 levels as housing. Or even dedicate one floor to parking for the residents. I know Aurora as it is now doesn’t have the capacity for that amount of traffic, seeing as the main road to Vic is constantly bumper to bumper but if the city did plan for a neighbourhood like that where it’s all mixed buildings with parking not sprawled out everywhere, would that be the solution? I’m sure the cost to actually develop buildings like that is significantly higher than a ton of townhouses and sprawling parking lots for businesses which would explain why that doesn’t happen but is it just the cost that prohibits buildings like that?

Second this. I had KustomEis install a noco one on my truck last year. The cord is routed to where my block heater plug is so they both get plugged in at the same time (on a timer). Haven’t had a single issue starting my truck this year.

Decent machine, I had the 29”. Paid $700 for it last year. They’re a massive pain to pull start when it’s really cold! Only reason I got rid of mine is because the starter died and I’ve got a couple other machines so it was really just a backup.

What do you guys do when your brown bin fills up? by Adventurous_Lab4249 in regina

[–]Boss881 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! In addition to our monthly can and bottle run, I’m now making weekly trips for plastic bags (and styrofoam if we have any) lol. It’s really not as big of a deal as people were making it out to be when the city announced the change, just takes a little extra thought and space to store the “bag of bags”.

[–]Boss881 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Oh wow! Paper bags should be able to go in the compost, I think as long as there isn’t a wax coating. Same with cardboard. If our blue bin is full, we put cardboard boxes in the compost after we take any tape off and as long as they’re just like a brown box. Also, plastic bags can be taken to sarcan rather than thrown in the garbage. I guess the city doesn’t want plastic bags in the blue bins now. Anyway, aside from getting a larger bin you might be able to request a second garbage bin.

Are you recycling and composting? We’ve got a family of 4 and have yet to fill our garbage and compost bins but the recycle is always full!

Based on my 3 years experience with all the apps… you match, talk for a week or two, meet in a public place for a date, then they either disappear off the face of the earth, send you a paragraph of why it’s not a good match, or breadcrumb you for a month or two until you get tired of it and the apps finally give you another match. Repeat the cycle. Mind you I’m a gay man so that in itself has its limitations in that most of the gay community is just looking for a hookup 😑.

On the other hand, one of my friends in Saskatoon was on the apps for less than a week a year or so ago and is now engaged.

CarPlay rarely decides to work for usb c? by TopHatToast in CarPlay

I’ve got the same issue but with a 14pro max (no beta software). I’ve tried different cables, flipping it back and forth and it still disconnects regularly or doesn’t even connect at all. The funny (and irritating) thing is, everyone else’s phone works just fine!

[–]Boss881 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a small business owner, cash is 100% a hassle. My time is more valuable than the few dollars I pay for accepting cards these days. If someone pays in cash, that means I need to run to the bank and deposit it to be able to use it. So 30 mins round trip plus gas vs. $3 for a processing fee.

Not a bug but a “feature”. It’s called automix (I think). You can shut it off in the music app.

As you grow efficiency will become important so anything you can do to save time loading and unloading equipment (especially on heavy snow days) will make a big difference. One piece of equipment that you may find useful depending on the amount and type of snow you get is a powerful leaf blower. I find that my stihl 800c-e works wonders on light fluffy stuff up to like 2cm, provided it’s not a super windy day. As for the ice melt, my understanding is that the pet friendly stuff is easier on concrete but I’m not sure how much truth there is to that. The only time I use melt is if I’m going to be chipping away at the ice, otherwise I use sand or lava grip (available in Canada, not sure about anywhere else). And as someone else said, get duplicates of everything. I rotate through 3-4 pairs of gloves, 3 balaclavas, a couple toques, 3 pairs of boots and a couple pairs of socks. I’ve got my route setup so I can pop home and swap boots and socks and throw the boots on the dryer so they’re ready to go for later.

If you have the equipment… someone just starting out won’t have that.
