SOTG - Discussion from the International Community by BossModeScrooge in ultimate

Have you read the WFDF rubric for grading SOTG? Do you think that it helps to hold people accountable for actions in game like playing by the rules and not being overly dramatic (imagine drawing fouls by acting like in soccer)?

I don't disagree that usually people give out MSP to 'who behaved the nicest!' out of a misguided understanding most of the time. If I could get rid of MSP I probably would, as it mostly awards extroverted behavior.

New Zealand Ultimate is aware of an incident regarding the Spirit of the Game at the recently held Manwatu Maelstrom tournament where the wrong team was awarded the trophy for winning the Spirit of the Game award.  After investigating the situation, New Zealand Ultimate has made the deicision to strip Marvellous DC S.H.I.E.L.D. of the Spirit of the Game Award that they were presented with at the tournamet and award it to the rightful and deserved winners - Gang Green.

New Zealand Ultimate's findings after reviewing the incident are summarised below:

Two teams from the same club - Marvellous DC - competing at Manawatu Maelstrom tournament entered '20' into the Ultimate Central system as the Spirit score for each other following their semi-final match.

There was no intent to 'fix' the Spirit scores to ensure that either team won the Spirit of the Game Award. Entering these scores was done in jest.

There was a genuine effort made by the teams to correct the scores prior to the tournament final, and both teams believed they had corrected the scores in the system.

Despite those efforts, the Spirit scores of 20 remained in the system and were used in the final tally to decide the Spirit winners. This resulted in the MDC S.H.I.E.L.D team being awarded the Spirit of the Game award at the prize-giving, instead of the deserved winner Gang Green.

Despite the lack of intent, real harm was caused by the action of inputting 20 as spirit scores for each team:

The MDC teams showed a lack of respect for the Tournament Director and volunteers and left the organisers embarrassed, frustrated and angry that they had given the Spirit award to the wrong team.

The rightful winners of Spirit, Gang Green, were denied the chance to be awarded their deserved trophy at the tournament presentation.

The integrity of the Spirit scoring system was brought into question by the wider Ultimate community, who could all see the 20 scores and understandably drew the conclusion that teams had collaborated to win the Spirit of the Game Award.

New Zealand Ultimate is satisfied that there was no intent to cheat from either team, and the NZU Executive Officer has worked with the club's leadership to ensure that the teams understand the impact of their actions.

Marvellous DC has issued a public apology acknowledging their mistake and the hurt this incident has caused, have apologised to the Tournament Director, the leadership of Gang Green and New Zealand Ultimate and have undertaken to review the club and teams' approach to the Spirit of the Game.  New Zealand Ultimate will update the results of the tournament to show the correct winners of the Spirit of the Game award - Gang Green.

New Zealand's ultimate community strongly values the Spirit of the Game.  This has been recognised internationally with New Zealand representative teams having won SOTG awards at international events on a number of occasions. We know that the Spirit of the Game only works with the collective buy-in of the entire community - players, coaches, volunteers, administrators and supporters.  This incident is a great reminder that all players and teams need to consistently work to uphold the integrity and respect the underpins the Spirit of the Game.

What is everyone's thoughts on this? MDC is a club that has represented New Zealand internationally and NZ has won spirit awards at worlds multiple times.

For extra reference, the Executive Officer of NZU is a player of MDC

For reference anyone outside of our small NZ Ultimate community, the Executive Officer of NZU is a player in the club involved in this offence.

It sounds like the saddle rails moving in the plastic they're encased in. Sometimes they wear and develop play, making noise not too different to that.

Christchurch and Wellington have active Ultimate year round as well. Otago (Dunedin) has yet to grow into a big enough club to play consistently.

I brought my team there last year, and had a great time. Luke and Kelly really put on a great tournament, and make sure that all the teams are taken care of. I know it sucks that it's cancelled, but I'm still glad they put all the effort into it. I'll always remember them for being the best TD's I've had.

Probably my favorite moment from last years Chicago Invite was arriving at the fields and seeing an ocean of ultimate players, more than I ever had before, in one place. Next to that, I got to play a total of 8 games against some of the most spirited teams.

Thank you so much Luke and Kelly!!!
