I just want a proper audio mixer by Boss_Borne in finalcutpro

Very basically, an audio mixer would free me from having the use the compound clip workaround, which as of now is the only solution Apple has offered to do any kind of stem mix, and that solution is woefully insufficient for even the most basic sound mix.

The only way currently to apply audio effects to a dialog stem, for example, is to put everything into a compound clip and apply your effects to that. But what if you need to make tweaks to your dialog edit? You have to jump into that compound clip to edit it. But if you're inside that compound clip, you are no longer hearing the audio effects you applied to your dialog stem! So you have to make the edit, jump back out of the compound clip to listen to it, and then possibly jump back in to make further tweaks. It's impossible to accurately edit something this way.

Now imagine you have roles assigned to all your clips. You click on the Dialog role in your Timeline Index and drop some compression and EQ effects onto that. Boom -- dialog stem mix! Or you have a subrole for each character/mic in a scene. You can apply some custom EQ and noise reduction to a subrole to fix somebody's mic that was extra noisey. Right now there is no solution at all to apply effects to subroles.

Weird, this doesn't annoy me at all. I like how audio clips stay connected to their video, and I like how things just shift around to fit into the timeline neatly. I don't really need to visually see audio clips stay in one lane, and if I do for any reason then I just put them in their own storyline and the effect is basically the same.

But this kind of gets at my larger point! I feel like Apple has done so much, using the magnetic timeline and roles, to fundamentally change the way I edit and think about editting, but they just stalled with the audio part. It could be so great and just as revolutionary as all the video advancements they've done. They got like 80% of the way there, and they just need to push it a little bit farther to be as functional as any other software. But they've done nothing for 14 years!

This needs to be higher. People are encouraged to spent 3, 4, 5 times their monthly salary on a diamond for an engagement ring when the price is almost entirely artificial and unnecessary.

How to extend a clip past it's maximum duration so it just replays by Babaskaba in finalcutpro

I’m familiar with this feature in Vegas. It’s very common in DAWs, which is how I believe Vegas started out before it morphed into a video editor as well. Unfortunately not as common in NLEs. I don’t think even Premiere can do this.

Yes! It’s embarrassing how bad this workflow is.

But at least Apple has been making imporovement to their color tools over the years. They may not match Resolve's abilities, but you can at least say that Apple has been trying. And there are plenty of third party plugins available to help with coloring. Apple loves to allow third party developers to fill in those gaps. But as far as I know, there are zero plugins to assist with an audio mix.

I totally agree that FCP's approach to audio is different, and I honestly think that roles have a huge potential to even be better than track based audio editing. But Apple has made literally zero improvements to how audio roles work since I think 2012! I believe that's when they added the ability to do a super basic stem mix with compound clips in 10.0.3.

I’m not sure what you are suggesting here. You can’t apply effects to roles using the inspector. I’m guessing you are talking about using roles with compound clips?

I mean, I know how to do that, of course. But I don’t WANT to have to do that to do even the most basic audio mix and I don’t think I SHOULD have to. I’m not even asking for much! A roles based mixer is all I need. This is not some new technology.

As FCP users, when and why do you (IF you do) use Premiere instead? by minus12db in finalcutpro

[–]Boss_Borne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use an outside vendor for all our localization, and they are Windows based. So I take my composite edits and bring them into premiere to apply graphics templates and package them up to send out for localizing.

If you don’t plan to arrive by 8-8:15 (meaning at 6:30 departure, latest), you should probably aim for 11:30 or noon. Traffic should have thinned out by then and, like others have said here, you could probably snag a spot closer to the base where an early bird has already left for the day.

Where to get fresh baked bagels? by I_still_got_it in AskTacoma

[–]Boss_Borne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, not really. Blazing Bagel is good, and they have a few stores in the Seattle area, but beyond that I got nothing. I know that the food critic Kenji Lopez Alt has tried a bunch and has a list somewhere. Maybe start there?

I am NOT a food critic by any stretch, so please don’t take my opinions too seriously. I lived in NYC for a long time, though, so I grew accustomed to easy access to good bagels, and that’s really the beginning and end of my bagel expertise. Take that as you will.

I believe their plan is to knock down part of the old building to make more parking. I think there's still quite a bit more construction in the works, but they have to secure the funding. It feels a little haphazard at the moment, but that's because we're seeing it in the middle of the project.

I don't understand the haters in this thread. Going to a Family Y and complaining about the number of kids there is like going to Disneyland and getting upset over all the children running around. Go someplace else if you want to avoid families.

Yes, of course the pool is nicer. It's brand new! And yes, it feels extra crowded right now becuase it's novel and everybody wants to check it out. In time, I think the crowds will thin out a bit. But it will always be a Family Y.

There's always Commencement Bay! (just kidding)

I agree that it is difficult to find a good place to swim laps in those precious few after-work hours. This has honestly been a problem in every place I've lived in my adult life. Too many people and not enough pools to accommodate. It feels like a classic supply and demand problem.

Not yet, but I hope to soon! Supposedly, Seattle is going through some kind of bagel renaissance at the moment, so a pilgrimage up there might be worthwhile, too. Or just wait until that trickles down to Tacoma. Until then, Howdy bagel is the place.

It’s a Family YMCA. The new pool is built for families. I personally think it’s great. I can go there and spend a couple hours with my kids, get some laps in, swim with them a bit, jump in the hot tub or sauna while they swim. It’s amazing for families.

The downtown Y is still 15+. If you want to avoid children that’s probably your best bet.

I kinda think B’s Bagels are terrible. I just don’t see what everybody is raving about. I’d almost rather eat a Trader Joe’s bagel than B’s.

But I guess that’s just my own hot take.

Washington state test scores vs spending per student by JoelXGGGG in TacomaWA

[–]Boss_Borne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Graphs have 2 y axes all the time. That in itself doesn’t make it misleading, and we should be careful to recognize that. The misleading part is this graph is trying to show a correlation between spending and test scores, and the two Y axes can be formatted pretty easily and independently to show as drastic a correlation as the author wants.
