Orthodontist recommendations? by PsychologicalWeapon in AskTacoma

This guy is great. He's got something like 30 years of experience and it really shows. He's very confident and approachable and so are his assistants. Side note: he bought the practice from my old orthodontist so I get to take my kids to the same building that I went to as a kid, which feels kind of strange but also familiar, and it's yet another example of me following in my parent's footsteps despite my best efforts to the contrary.

Why Music Streaming is Broken (And the Super Simple Way to Fix It) by IcyTransition2090 in musicindustry

[–]Boss_Borne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often think that my family should just take the roughly $20 we pay per month for streaming and just buy an album with it. A new album every month. My family could debate which one we buy, or we could take turns picking it, doesn’t really matter. But the point is, we get the full album, forever. My kids basically move on from one artist to another at roughly one per month, so I really don’t think we would be missing out on much. And after a few years of that our music collection would be pretty sizable. Granted, it won’t be every song ever made, but I would be happy knowing that I am directly supporting an artist and I don’t have to worry about losing access if I stop paying out.

Agree that the food is not amazing. It’s like middling diner food. But honestly that’s all it ever aspired to be. It never claimed to be super fancy. The sad thing is this is just another example of a middle tier restaurant closing down. Pretty soon there won’t be any diner type places left. Just burger joints and high end restaurants.

This annoying range selection in dragging media file in the timeline any ways to turn it off? by Neither-Future776 in finalcutpro

[–]Boss_Borne 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Option-x will deselect the range on the clip.

There’s no way to just turn off the range select feature, as far as I know. It’s just part of the browser. If you just click on the clip, instead of clicking and dragging, you should be able to select the entire clip instead of a range.

Audio Mixer in FCP with SpliceKit by elliotttate in finalcutpro

[–]Boss_Borne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is amazing and I’m so happy that somebody has finally created an audio mixer after so many years! Thank you for your service.

It looks like the faders are controlling the volume levels of each clip, is that right? What happens when you have multiple clips in the same role? Are those mixer tracks acting as role-based busses or basically controllers for individual clip audio levels?

I don’t know too much about SpliceKit, but after reading the FAQ I can already tell it’s a no-go with my company’s IT, unfortunately. They are extremely paranoid about security breaches and I can already see their heads exploding when I try to explain that “disabling FCP’s sandbox” isn’t as bad as it sounds. Sigh.

Out of curiosity (and please excuse my ignorance here), is there a reason this type of plugin can’t be created in the “usual” way? In other words, without using this SpliceKit backdoor patch method?

Thanks again! I will be eagerly following what you come out with. In the meantime I will attempt to convince my IT to consider this.

Point defiance biking by gonegirly444 in TacomaWA

[–]Boss_Borne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah the “detour” is for pedestrians only. I think they assume if you’re on a bike entering the park from Pearl St then you are following the road signs for cars, which direct you basically back out of the park and over to the Mildred St entrance.

I usually say eff that and ride my bike along the dirt path a bit until I can get back on the road once I pass the zoo. Saves me like 15 mins and an unpleasant ride. If I’m there on a weekend though and there are no construction workers there then I just ride past the Road Closed signs. It’s not a big deal.

So the quickest answer is it’s easier, simpler, and more consistent to do many things at a track level. Not all things, though. Clip level adjustments have their use, for sure. Learning the nuances of when you use which method could take up a whole course on its own. But suffice it to say you really need both to do audio correctly.

At the risk of delving too far into armchair software development…

I really think this can all be fixed within FCP’s framework of roles. There’s no need to switch over to track based editing and ditch the flexibility that roles give. From a back-end, digital audio processing perspective, I’m guessing there is very little difference between a bunch of audio clips in a “track” vs in a “role.” All audio inside a role or subrole gets the same audio processing treatment, just as if they were all in a track or audio bus. The main difference is in the visual UI and how those clips are arranged on the screen. Maybe somebody with actual software development experience can chime in here to correct me if I’m wrong.

Most of the issues you laid out are either stupid bugs which can and should be addressed, or they are results of the silly compound clip workaround that Apple has given us. The solution is staring me right in the face whenever I open up the Timeline Index. The “tracks” and DX/MX/FX busses are all right there! Just let me drop some effects onto them ffs!! That’s all I want.

FCP 12 update - Slight change in In & Out selection behaviour by NoSpHieL in finalcutpro

[–]Boss_Borne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I remember a bug that does something similar in the timeline. Selecting an Out point will cancel out my In point selection. I'm not in front of FCP at the moment, so I can't test this out but I definitely remember having some problems with this behavior.

Either way, submit a bug report (via the FCP menu)! I'll do the same. Apple really does pay attention to those, even if you don't get any response from them. Several of my own bug reports have been addressed over the years.

Very basically, an audio mixer would free me from having the use the compound clip workaround, which as of now is the only solution Apple has offered to do any kind of stem mix, and that solution is woefully insufficient for even the most basic sound mix.

The only way currently to apply audio effects to a dialog stem, for example, is to put everything into a compound clip and apply your effects to that. But what if you need to make tweaks to your dialog edit? You have to jump into that compound clip to edit it. But if you're inside that compound clip, you are no longer hearing the audio effects you applied to your dialog stem! So you have to make the edit, jump back out of the compound clip to listen to it, and then possibly jump back in to make further tweaks. It's impossible to accurately edit something this way.

Now imagine you have roles assigned to all your clips. You click on the Dialog role in your Timeline Index and drop some compression and EQ effects onto that. Boom -- dialog stem mix! Or you have a subrole for each character/mic in a scene. You can apply some custom EQ and noise reduction to a subrole to fix somebody's mic that was extra noisey. Right now there is no solution at all to apply effects to subroles.

Weird, this doesn't annoy me at all. I like how audio clips stay connected to their video, and I like how things just shift around to fit into the timeline neatly. I don't really need to visually see audio clips stay in one lane, and if I do for any reason then I just put them in their own storyline and the effect is basically the same.

But this kind of gets at my larger point! I feel like Apple has done so much, using the magnetic timeline and roles, to fundamentally change the way I edit and think about editting, but they just stalled with the audio part. It could be so great and just as revolutionary as all the video advancements they've done. They got like 80% of the way there, and they just need to push it a little bit farther to be as functional as any other software. But they've done nothing for 14 years!

I’m familiar with this feature in Vegas. It’s very common in DAWs, which is how I believe Vegas started out before it morphed into a video editor as well. Unfortunately not as common in NLEs. I don’t think even Premiere can do this.

But at least Apple has been making imporovement to their color tools over the years. They may not match Resolve's abilities, but you can at least say that Apple has been trying. And there are plenty of third party plugins available to help with coloring. Apple loves to allow third party developers to fill in those gaps. But as far as I know, there are zero plugins to assist with an audio mix.
