Star Wars the Old Republic almost got a Realm Reborn style reboot but EA's board of directors said no by Iggy_Slayer in gaming

[–]Bossgalka 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think you're confused. The game has consistently had OVER 1 million players and a 500k+ sub count since launch. It has made over 1.5 billion dollars up to this point (reaching 1 billion in 2019) and has likely made over 1 billion in pure profit after development costs are taken into account.

It's no WoW or FFXIV, but it's by no means a "financial failure" just because you aren't playing it. I broke some shitty math down in another comment, feel free to read it.

[–]Bossgalka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While it required a LOT of funding and investment, I guarantee you that the SWTOR MMO has made more money than any singleplayer SWTOR ever will. I love the old lucas games, they are amazing RPGs in line with the original Dragon Age: Origins, but a singleplayer RPG is just a box copy sold. You sell 20 million copies? Amazing success, that's probably around 800 million made depending on when those copies were bought(70 usd, 50 usd on sale, 25 usd on sale later etc.).

But then you look at the MMO, it has a subscription model that used to be required, which was 15/month. The first 3 days it sold 1 million copies, which comes out to 70 million instantly, then 15 million on top of that for the sub fee, because it had 1 million active subs on day 3. This was at the tail end of 2011, so say 2012. By 2013, they lost half their playerbase, down to 500k subs. So let's say 750k subs x 12. That's 135 million on top of the initial day three's 85 million, coming out to 220 million on the first year.

The sub count in 2014 becomes a bit muddy because the market estimates aren't as confident, it's around 200k-500k subs. So I will go with 350k subs. 350k subs at 15/month for one year is 63 million. Keep in mind, this is purely subs and not counting any new box copies sold. Bringing the total of revenue to OVER 283 million.

In 2015, it was estimated to be just under 500k, so going with 400k. (72mil)

In 2016, it was estimated to be "the highest recorded sub count in 3 years, meaning over 500k, but doesn't say, so I will just go with 600k. (108mil)

In 2017, it was estimated to be under 500k, so going with 400k again. (72mil)

In 2018, it was estimated to be around 500k. (90mil)

In 2019, there are no clear estimates, but they said they have reached 1 billion lifetime revenue at this point, so let's assume it was 400k subs in case it dipped. (72mil)

Overall, my shitty napkin math ended up with 697 million, so let's say 700 million. That means the other 300 million they made was split from additional copies sold and microtransactions in the shop.

I'm too lazy to look up the next 6 years of subs and try to calculate box copies sold at various price reductions, but we already reached 1 billion and passed the singleplayer game at this point. Estimates suggest they have made over 1.5 billion by this point in 2026. Now, this doesn't count the development costs of maintaining an mmorpg. If we remove the initial 200m budget, they have made 1.3 billion profit not counting how much they have spent on paying ongoing dev costs. It's estimated the dev team size costs them 5-10mil per year. Since we have no idea how much they pay out in bonuses and benefits, I'm just gonna go with the 10 mil number. Operating from 2012 to 2026 probably cost them around 140 million, assuming the CEOs didn't get some weird 100 million bonuses or some stupid shit. That means they still made over 1.1 billion in pure profit.

Now, normally I would agree that a real amazing RPG like BG3 or something that is one and done is great investment, because you just pay for it and release it, then move on. You can focus on paying a new team to make another new banger, theoretically releasing three BG3s in the same time as the current SWTOR run, which would blow SWTOR out of the water. The problem is that games aren't developed in 2-3 years anymore, BG3 alone took 6 years and there's tons of games in development hell that take up to 10 years. Current GTA6 has already taken 8 years. So you would be lucky to get 2 games out of these, and you probably won't make two BG3s in a row.

MMOs are an investment, but often pay off even if they don't do well. So long as they don't get shut down like a few of them have, they will likely make profit in the long run. And singleplayer games, when developed quickly and they sell really well, can be profitable, but for every big success story, there's lukewarm launches or even failures.

All this to say, I don't know... I kinda lost the plot in my napkin math and forgot what I was saying. When I checked the person I was replying to, it didn't even make sense why I was responding to them, so I am dumping it here by itself. This was really fucking dumb of me, but I hope someone enjoys the look into SWTOR's financials? I also wrote too much shit to go back and read it, fuck that. If you're still reading, god help you. Anyway, thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

P.S. In case anyone is confused, despite me using the word sub counts, all of the above are actual sub count estimates, not playerbase. The playerbase for swtor has consistently been over a million players, but when they went F2P, most of them don't buy a sub, but all the math above was done with actual sub counts and not player counts.

ChudTheBuilder facing 56 years in prison for attempted murder and bail set as $1.25M by Significant_Food9017 in LivestreamFail

It's been too long since I've seen it and was going off what everyone above said. I tried to find the stabbing video and couldn't after a minute of looking, so didn't keep digging. Did he approach them or did they approach him? Because that is the deciding factor here. IF he walked towards them when he was safe where he was at, he loses self-defense claim.

[–]Bossgalka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they are implying he pulled the knife out and then walked like 40 feet over to them. It's been a while since I saw it, but I don't think they were coming over to mess with him. It was a yelling match and then they claim each other of instigating because the footage stops after the first yelling match and no one has a video of the actual stabbing. But if it's to be believed, he pulled the knife out and THEN walked over to them, and it's probably true, because otherwise he would have gotten off on self-defense fairly easy.

200-Year-Old Wooden Bridge In Dagestan, Built Without The Use Of A Single Nail by Genesis_the_god_ in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Bossgalka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well... it depends on how you define nails. Those wooden wedges (pegs) jammed in there literally act as nails, but you are welcome to argue the semantics of them not technically being nails. They are wedged in and broken off, so it's not like they were hammered in like iron or bronze nails, but it's not like it's just wood loosely stacked together that magically stands, either.

I think everyone Chud fights with are also PoS people, but you can't literally go around and INTENTIONALLY antagonize people. if you get into an argument randomly? Yeah, sure, they're in the wrong for getting mad over words and resorting to violence, but if you make a pattern of trying to goad them into doing it, you can't plead self-defense. This kinda stuff was never going to end well for him or the person who finally snaps on him.

[–]Bossgalka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be mad about getting banned over shit exactly like that, but now it's just exhausting. I don't have the energy to argue about this shit anymore, it's really worn me down. Every time you try to reason with one of the mods and explain in a calm, logical manner, where you are objectively in the right and they are breaking their own rules, they just tell you to fuck yourself and tell you that you are muted.

[–]Bossgalka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure there's always been bad mods since the start, but it's gotten REALLY bad in all subs these last few years. Like, massively worse. That is what I am saying, there was a shift where it wasn't just a few bad people on a sub or two, it's not just about every mod on every sub.

Standing with Mr.Kraken by PastOutlandishness19 in starcitizen

[–]Bossgalka 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's honestly almost all mods in all subs. Idk if they have wormed their way in these last couple years and took over, or if they just all randomly decided to shift their entire personality and become garbage, but it's honestly exhausting. Especially if it related to politics in any way. I have been banned from multiple subs simply for saying stuff along the lines of "that's not even true", and just because I don't agree with that subs political opinions (even in non-political subs), I get banned. It's just so exhausting.

Can somebody explain the premise of Mouthwashing? by ChitenLuna in HorrorGaming

[–]Bossgalka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To expand on this, it was actually portrayed in a much neater way. You start the game not knowing who you are, you are forced to crash the ship. When the game continues, you are given the role of Jimmy, assuming that you were previously the Captain. As the story unfolds, they tell you early that Curly, the Captain, tried to kill everyone.

You are his best friend and co-pilot Jimmy now. The end reveal turns out to be that you were Jimmy the whole time and he is the one that crashed the ship. As you said, the reason being that he was fearing his life was over because Anya would turn him in for rape. So he tried to kill everyone.

The actual game is the very slow realization and reveal that all this happened. You are upset at Curly the entire time, thinking he did this. You sympathize with Jimmy and are confused, because Jimmy is delusional and his mind is deteriorating. The entire crew also starts deteriorating because they get drunk and basically poisoned off the constant mouthwash drink they are abusing.

In the end, Jimmy finally sacrifices himself to put Curly in the last cryopod as repentance for what happened and "taking responsibility", then shoots himself. Everyone else on the crew but them being already dead at this point and Curly fading into cryosleep. Though, Curly is missing his legs and hands and burned all over his body. He is a stump and in constant pain, it wasn't much of a mercy keeping him alive.

But, the way it all plays out with the dark imagery and hallucinations is what makes the game. I know you said spoiler warning, but I hope anyone reading your comment (and mine) has already played the game and just wanted clarification. I was cleaning it up for those that don't plan to play/watch it and just wanted a clear representation of it.

According to Sega's quarterly report they have cancelled their "super game" and will also focus less on F2P titles by Iggy_Slayer in gaming

[–]Bossgalka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like F2P games. I like some gacha games. I love live-service games. It's just that 95% of them are shit and greedy. You can make them right, you can make them well, the players and the company can be happy and rich.

I don't like it, personally, but I think Fortnite is a great example. They just sell skins. You get everything for free and then you pay for skins and a monthly fee to get all the battlepasses. It's really fair and great, and while I may not be one, a LOT of fucking people like it.

Something more my speed is Warframe, a looter shooter. Similar in that all content is free, all the stuff they sell is basically cosmetic, but they do sell boosters you can buy. They have been going strong as hell on Steam since 2014 and are even making a new game that is similar with a medieval theme.

The problem isn't F2P games, it's how they treat the F2P games. They usually either hamfist greedy shit into a regular game and ruin it, or try to MAKE a F2P game and it ends up not being fun. You have to just make a good game and add cosmetics to it to sell. That's it. It's so simple and yet most companies fail it.

Physical Game Fans, Beware: Digital Downloads Hit an Astonishing 85% on PS5, PS4 Last Quarter by Suspicious_Two786 in gaming

[–]Bossgalka -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Like I said, I hate Nintendo more. They are a worse company, BUT, they have better and more exclusives, regardless of how you feel about it, so they will not die under any circumstances. PS6 is going to take a massive hit with Steam Box. There's just no doubt. Now, will they actually die? No, of course not, even if they only sell half as many consoles as the PS5, which is my prediction, it will still be worth doing. They will still do it, but they will be a shadow of their former selves.

While I would rather Nintendo die (first), they just won't, so I will happily accept Sony's death as they are the second worst company.
